I did the gaming journalism bit ages ago.
It's absolute garbage and nearly made me hate videogames.
Journalism in general is bad, but tech/product oriented journalism is even worse since the publishers/manufacturers hate the keys to the product and your balls/ovaries. I don't know how are things in Germany, but the money (which is laughably bad anyway) is not worth it unless you happen to land at a stunningly nice pub, which surely enough will be either swallowed by a huge media conglomerate (fucking everyone over) or close down in a few years. I know. I've seen both happening.

Maybe I phrased it wrong. I'm not necessarily looking for the standard review job. For example that one gig i applied to was more creative and content based since it was mostly about preparing information for a show on youtube. Maybe editorial work describes it better idk.

Well, I disagree with the 'made me hate games' part, but other than that I find game reviews and so on to just be really boring and trying too hard to validate it as an art, when it's really more of a product by default. You're not there to tell a story, you're there to entertain. That's a skill, but not necessarily 'art'. Yeah, I'm that asshole, fuck you too.
There is nothing worse than having a legit science interest in it and the first thing you find in relation to ludology is "publishers, how can we help you?", which is immediately offputting. And then there is the long-form article, which is sometimes great, but you can't help but feeling that you have to put yourself in a pretty crazy state to think there is that much to tell about video games. I've tried the blog essay angle too, but after Call of Duty going full psychopath-porn and GamerGate and that crap I've just lost all interest in it.
Besides, it's really just all talk about other people's creative stuff. I personally get more from movies (aside from being an actual story), and have taken up the notion to make my own, not try to appeal to others.
I enjoyed the industry aspect of it for a while though. But the desire is gone.
Btw, if anyone is looking for a bunch of academic books on games, I will happily sell mine.
