America keeps going to the left. A large chunk of my generation was poisoned to conservatism thanks to Dubya. When we get old enough so that most of us actually care about voting, you'll see a shift. Not to mention the US is just going to keep getting more diverse.
More leftward, sure, but it's not going to have any actual left wing politics for a long long time. Capitalism is an inherently right wing system, and while it's possible to make it look a bit more lefty, support for capitalism cannot be left wing. Which isn't to make any sort of judgement on people who support regulated capitalism, I'm just trying to make the point that everything is currently so massively right wing that centre right positions are seen as left positions.

I think it is more the case that views are so extremely, unrealistically, almost chilishly left that you can't see where the true center is.

I rarely voice my political opinion on GAF, but I agree that things are almost comically leftist, at least in the mainstream.

And then there's the far right racist brigade. Both extreme sides are like cartoon characters.

I said something similar to this to someone the other day and they said "you think you're so informed and smart. You're not a smart person, Sol." Man, if you're going to be so extreme that you jump to conclusions like that based on vague political remarks then yes, I am allowed to think you're a clown

I agree with this. it kinda depends on the definition of legt-wing/right-wing though.
there's a big difference between big parties associated with the left and other schools of thought.

GAF is hardly that leftist. It's very liberal when it comes to social issues, but it's fairly fiscally conservative and very mixed in terms of foreign policy.

It only looks superleftist because conservatives are routinely chased out due to their adherence to cave-dweller beliefs. I'd argue that gaffers are more sectarian than anything else as far as politics go.

I'm honestly either a moderate or a libertarian. I don't even remotely like the idea of socialism and I've been drifting from the left for years.

growing up in the punk scene I was about as far left as possible but since I've sold out and have been in business for the past 13 years so I can certainly see the argument for not interfering with business.

there are so many companies that absolutely get it right. but then there are also so many that are abusive and take advantage of the worker.

in the end, I believe a function of government is to protect the people that fall through the cracks and so I have consistently voted left for as long as I have been able. much to the chagrin of my conservative parents.

Politics is so horrible, having in mind that humans are inherently selfish and lack compassion I dont see a very bright future ahead of us. Even people here on GAF are simply too quick to judge others.
Prejudice and fear will be our ruin.

If we want to dumb the election down as far as possible, it's a lawyer versus a business man, I can't think of two worst types of people to run a country.

Quite the racial makeup, for me it's a white Mexican mother who barely speaks spanish and has a perfect English accent and a fully English dad. So I'm pretty much just english except everyone in school called me ese in the summer when I'd tan.

Both things are wrong in my opinion, the wort types of people to lead a country seem to be the only ones willing to do it and the system is ridiculous and fucked.

My dad owns a company. Most of his arguments about regulations is that they normally don't come into play but still waste his time and also because of people that take advantage of the system. If there weren't regulations though the company would be much worse safety wise and even worse environmentally. It's not that they're malicious, it's that they don't care and don't consider it important. In a nutshell regulations are like a parent telling kids to not eat too much junk food and to brush their teeth and to make sure to share. Just wouldn't get done without someone pressuring them

Yeah it's funny, my mother family is basically all german, so I have a really white skin and freckles. Ah and also an Afro-textured really dark brown hair, quite weird combo I'd say!

It's because there have historically been genuine idiots or dangerous radically minded people who ruin things for everyone. Politics also determine how people live their lives, and the quality of those lives. It's dire business.

That said, I am straight smack dab in the moderate zone. I am the green on that graph. I think. Most of the time.

Great novel. I seriously love this book so much.

This is garbo. Left/right refers to economics, you need another axis to show authoritarian/social liberalism.

Oh my bad, I don't know anything about Socialism I mean't communism, typo.

Socialism is a stepping stone on the path to communism. A socialist state is one where private property doesn't exist, everything is either publicly owned or personally owned, and people earn based on their contribution - basically you can no longer earn money purely from ownership as is possible in capitalism, and how the richest maintain their standings.

Communism is the same but people earn based on what they need rather than how much they contribute - I don't believe this is possible until we reach a post-scarcity society, but socialism should be wholly achievable (well, excluding the part where the rich will do whatever they can to not lose their privileged positions)

Are people getting pissed that a few people didn't care that much for it?

For a reviewer, 7 out of 10 is the middle ground between "I found it really shit and I have an obligation to the reader to let them know, but I also don't want death threats." It lets them keep their conscience clean, and keep their job.

I guess the actual problem is that humans cant get along and respect different ideas. Actually having a graph is the problem no matter where you are in it. There should exist only reason, empathy and solidarity.

oh I agree. regulations need to be a thing because ethical business practices are not the natural inclination when it prevents money from being made.

however, there are the few companies out there that get it right.

look into the company culture of patagonia for instance

nah, people get lost in that.

keep it simple.

basically the further left you go the more the economy becomes assimilated by the government. the further right the less government is involved in the economy with far right being complete separation of the economy and government (Laissez-faire style capitalism)

I'm sure they're good and all but I would be surprised if they didn't try to cut corners somewhere

So systems where production is controlled by the workers but it's directly rather than through the government would be toward the right?
