I'm not going to get into my personal life since, well, it's personal, but I can repeat what it's been shared at some of the workshops I've attended to.
Doing it:
-It's mostly a psychological thing. Both partners are hot and get into it. As long as it's clean (and you better clean yo ass before sexy time, you filthy animals) it tastes and smells like nothing. It's just a muscular ring of flesh that may be more or less tightly closed depending on the receptive partner.
Receiving it:
Here's where differences show up. The entire area is rife with nerve endings and is highly sensitive, but not everybody experiences the same sensations.
-Most men find it pleasurable or even highly pleasurable since the male perineum is somewhat different and that entire area is incredibly sensitive. Anilingus can indirectly stimulate the perineum, the testicles and even the prostate. Some people have compared it to a different kind of blowjob. The biggest barrier to its enjoyment is mental.
-There's a very clear divide between women when it comes to anilingus as receptive partners. Some enjoy it greatly, but others feel nothing at all. Kind of like getting your elbow licked. My understanding is that (for those who like it) much of the enjoyment is psychological (turns out that people get hot doing hot stuff), but also that some of them may require more stimulation than the one that can be provided by a tongue, which is why a wet/lubed out finger or small toy tends to work better in many cases.
-Analingus is crazy popular and nearly universally enjoyed among gay men. Lesbians, however, are rarely into it. Heterosexual couples are more of a mixed bag. Some swear it off, while others swear by it. It's generally used as a complement to female on male oral sex or foreplay for anal. And it's almost always kept as a secret.
