Fall Anime 2014 |OT2| Idly waiting for the Dog Days of Sabre

All this serious talk around here. Anyone feeling down and serious about anime should watch Gundam Build Fighters.

Accel World - 13

So Chiyuri finally gets Burst Link and is a healer. Which seems to be a pretty big deal in the Accelerated World. I can see why, given that anybody would want a healer on their team in a game like Brain Burst.

There also seems to be a new Burst Linker...or apparently not?

This show is doing a good job of definitely keeping the plot going to keep me interested. The world building in this show is pretty stellar. First Brain Burst seems to be a kind of regular virtual fighting game, and then it's revealed that there's an MMO-esque world where time moves differently a la the Time Chamber thing from DBZ. Added with the little facts like the territory battles, the Legion Masters, the fact that healers are very hard to come by, etc.

I just really like that kind of stuff in anime with little details like those.

You're watching Gintama in 2015.

Has this been pre ordained by the committee

But not Try.

The Light of El Cantare
I mean, its sort of funny when someone posts a virtual essay on why the most recent episode of Fate/stay Night sucks and how Shirou is stupid and how there aren't enough cool adult characters like Kiritsugu or Rider from Fate/Zero, or how Amagi Brilliant Park didn't spend enough time on serious analysis of how to save a business. But a large amount of those posts are not even really criticism, its just hating on a popular thing based on a preconceived desire to hate it.

"It's a FAKE CRITICISM CONSPIRACY if it's criticism of something that doesn't personally factor into my enjoyment"

Please stop trying to disguise your own inability to cope with criticism of things you enjoy as some kind of populism or revolt against groupthink. Spare everyone and just stop posting here if you're only going to repeatedly vomit MUH ELITISM, MUH HIPSTERISM from the sidelines without providing one single valid argument as to why any specific instance of criticism levied at popular anime by a single poster in this thread is invalid or disingenuous. You clearly have no actual knowledge of this community anyway if you genuinely believe that there is absolute consensus on any piece of media or censorship of dissent.

Probably why I TLDR any of those long posts here.

Sounds like all of your posts are worth TLDRing if you're so threatened by critical analysis that you don't agree with.

The topic isn't open for discussion anymore. If you want a response, feel free to go to PM, although if you're going to send me posts like this, I'll probably just ignore it.

Yeah. Make sure you watch the first season only.

Only watch the second season if you want to see more 2D robot action without the same kind of quality as the first season.

Actually tempted to go back through Try some evening as I think I've been watching it wrong. I mean, it's still bad but I'm curious!

No, but I don't think this ongoing conversation is really going go go anywhere.
I really hope this is an intentional Wham! reference. But you're in luck then, since Dresden said not to have it anymore.

Actual Anime Content:

I got around to finishing Akame Ga Kill, and despite the ending being made-up for the anime, it was just about as good as the source material (which is to say, mixed). Despite a lot of the manga fans hating the ending, it basically approximated the rest of the series and what I'd expect to happen while simultaneously deleting a lot of objectionable shit.

Kiddy Grade 22-24 + Final Thoughts

I will admit that Grade and Girl-and are certainly different, being made with different goals and in different eras of anime with different trends, but based on viewing them in reverse order and separated by a number of years, I think Grade sets out what it wants to be more quickly, but I wouldn't disown Girl-and entirely. There's still some things I liked about it, but that's for another time.

The finale reminded me of the best parts of Spaceballs and Star Wars at the same time. Giant ship battles, but also EcLu getting to do what they do best. The moment where
Lumiere won the battle by taking control of the giant ship
was pretty rad. I loved that the clones and their rainbow fleet returned to help, too.

The idea of "class struggle in space with superpowers" is an interesting one, and elements from as far back as the start of the show all tied into things later on. I didn't see any huge flaws in the animation, and getting a peek at one of Aya Hirano's earlier roles was a curiosity. I haven't seen too many sci-fi anime like this, but I enjoyed this one. It's got a good amount of substance, and a good amount of fun. A product of its era to be sure, but a lot of what it's saying still holds up today.

Next up, Azumanga Daioh. The one daily life comedy that really stuck to the overseas fandom. I'm going to figure out why it did, and wonder what other series are worthy of joining it. (One of the answers is already K-ON!)

I really can't stand the argument: "you should have expected F/SN UBW to be completely different from F/Z."

In my case, no. I've only seen F/Z, I'm not very knowledgeable about most studios and more so their staff yet, I know nothing about the VNs and the Nasuverse either and read a lot of hype for the FSN UBW. Mind you, I cannot trust reddit the slightest shit but it's not like there was some here too and at other places.

There's probably many like me who've just seen F/Z and would expect s.th. roughly the same giving the same studio, franchise and basic premise.

Now a bunch here were also voicing their low expectations and since I wasn't even such a big fan of F/Z I didn't get my own up either. However, the first episode was quite good I thought, so I decided to keep going. Unfortunately it just so happened to turn to shit then and I said just as much. I dropped it a couple weeks ago but every episode I did watch I had the darn right to voice my criticism.

The idea that it's my fault to expect or rather want a show to be any good is ridiculous, in this case at least. I do now know perfectly well that I most likely never need to care for anything concerning that franchise again.

I also do not think it's true that the fundamentals of FSN UBW and F/Z are so different. It's just that F/Z executes relatively well on its ambitions while UBW...fails. And if I'm supposed to believe it tries to achieve something substantially different then it failed as those things, too. Well, maybe it's a decent combat SFX porn but I think the studio wouldn't agree with a goal that terribly low.

That's more of failure of the poster's expectations than the show itself.

Its like watching Idolmaster and expecting some deep meta-commentary about being an idol in Japanese society and not just teenage girls being dramatic and silly about being an idol.

That's probably a better example for this but I can't think of one at the moment.

Well, it's not like people weren't warned that F/SN would be like that! But is it really the viewers fault that the show is crappy? I mean, if there expectation is just that the show is going to be decent, that seems like a fairly understandable expectation.

Or, to put it another way. You don't really know much about the Fate universe of media properties, you watch and enjoy Fate/Zero and then you find out a sequel is being released. You try it out, but are shocked to discover it's not really what you were expecting.

Sure, people more familiar with the franchise would know what to expect, but not everyone is familiar with it.

My comment was actually geared towards viewers rather than the show itself. I guess I would expect viewers to stop watching shows they aren't liking, rather than continue to watch and complain about, especially it it isn't anything like what they thought it was.

But yeah, it's the social aspect, I get that.

Leaving aside the age old problem that people are dumb, it is worth remembering that anime doesn't have a great reputation in the West and some of that is justified. Most of the big mainstream titles are aimed squarely at 12 year old boys so it's not surprising people who watch such programming would get looked down upon. Furthermore, people are vaguely aware that there's lots of "Pedo Shit" coming out of Japan and, frankly, they aren't completely wrong on that either. It's not surprising that people are only expressed to a fraction of anime tend to have a bad impression of it.

You have two choices - either be a better PR person for anime and promote better titles or ignore close-minded people.

When you're right, you're right. I was mainly upset at the fact that these individuals were making generalized statements. I would not have minded it as much if they simply said the phrase, "Seems like,"or something of that nature. However, that being said, I possibly could have taken a better stance and done something akin to the first of the two choices, I admit fault in not clearly explaining that, while they're views may be justified in certain cases, it is not the case for everything. I did try, but not to the best of my ability.

Yeah so this so gundam.

I feel as though I'm watching a harem anime protagonist in a gundam show. Three girls already want him, I'm sure there will be a forth at some point but by then I will probably have already dropped this.

Funimation gave an update on Evangelion 3.33 release

We are working directly with the Japanese studio and the original creator on the upcoming Evangelion 3.33 home video release. This is a unique opportunity that presented itself to us, and since the plot for Evangelion 3.33 is so different from previous story lines, we are thrilled that the creator has asked to be so heavily involved in this project. Studio Khara has even decided that they would like to create their own special subtitle tracks for the release! We thank you for your continued patience as we work to confirm a release date. Please keep an eye on our social channels and our website for more updates!

I'm not a huge fan of the manga this is based on, I think for good reason. It's not offensively bad, at least provided you can deal with ecchi comedy, which this has in spades. Trinity Seven, for better and for worse, is yet another entry in the perverted action comedy genre. It doesn't aspire to be more than this, but it still managed to fall below my expectations for even this kind of show.

The female characters are slightly more perverted than you might expect from most entries, but this in it of itself is just where the "genre" is now rather than anything pushing the envelope. In terms of the actual fanservice, which is half the reason (or more) that anyone watches these shows, it's surprisingly conservative for how willing 5/7ths of the girls are to throw their sexuality at the main character and, by extension, the audience. You're mostly given clothed shots of groped breasts, lingering shots of cleavage, the occasional panty shot, and the show's trademark: the girls' clothes exploding and their subsequent covering of whatever remains of their modesty. How little all this affects me beyond the occasional feeling of irritation is probably indicative of where I am with this stuff and how annoyed I am that so many anime lean into it still. But that may be a more general annoyance with the audience I've aged out of at this point.

The action elements are reasonably well done, but they're nothing exceptional. They're more a function of the show's fanservice given the main character's power has the (side) effect of blowing off mostly female clothing. The magic elements besides Arata's powers are mostly nonsensical with unclear rules on what the difference is between a "Trinity Seven" member and one who has attained "Trinity." One would assume that these are the same thing, but the show's internal logic seems to say the latter is more advanced than the former and I'm not quite sure why.

The story is more or less what you'd expect of a fanservice vehicle. The main character's latent powers caused great destruction and he's given a chance to harness them. But his powers still pose a threat and the all-female cast members entrusted with stopping him invariably fall in love with him (or had already before the events of the series). As the series is loyal to an ongoing manga series, it gets to the end of the first major plot arc with some minor hooks for the sequel that will probably never happen.

The characters are mostly standard issue archetypes, but a few of them (Arin, Liese, and Levi) are enjoyable enough that they stopped me from dropping this entirely. But they in and of themselves can't save the series as a whole from being largely unredeemed dreck that you're better off avoiding. Too much PLOT, too little plot, and a mostly unexceptional cast with merely okay production values. 3/10

There aren't even three. Are you counting Joshua or something? She's not into him at all.

Well now. Wonder what that means :p

It's nothing we don't already know about; Khara wasn't satisfied with Funimation's translation and dub, so they're redoing the subtitles themselves and are having Funimation redo some (or all) of the dub. Who knows how much longer it will be until it releases?
And given that this is Eva 3.33, who cares? :p
