Played the demo yesterday.
The graphics did not impress me much in the sense we don't see much improvement from remake. I think it's due to the region which is particularly ugly, even in the original. Im not worried though, i think they kept the more beautiful sceneries (of which we saw plenty in the trailers) for us to discover in game.
On the story and fan service side of things, i never played anyhting that resonnated as much. I was back in 1998, a child with wide open eyes except here i already knew the story... A weird feeling, discovering something you already know... I think that's exactly what the devs wanted to do and it's wild how good they managed to do it.

Performance does indeed look soft but i got used to it after a few minutes. Some of the textures popingin and out was a bit distracting. However,


This reaffirmed what i already knew, its the story of this game that makes it such a master piece not the graphics.


So hyped for the full release. Not expecting it but it would be a nice bonus for the final build to have a sharper image and to clean up the textures.


Who else got chills playing the piano?

No an improvement over 16. Seems to maintain 60fps or there abouts and no dynamic framerate this time. Just the resolution is lower and probably dynamic at around 900-1080p. At least in the demo anyway.
Are we sure about the resolution in performance? I must be getting really old. It looked like native 1440 to me. I’m old and blind I guess but it has none of the artifacts of FSR2?

It looks significantly less visually advanced than FF16 imho, specially cutscenes and lighting, I m quite surprised tbh
I dont think this is true. I remember FF16 vividly and i forced myself to play in gfx mode because the performance mode was way to blurry. Its atleast standable here. Also the scope of 16 was much smaller. This is coming form a huge ff16 fan

Downloaded it, got to the piano, played with it, and deleted the demo. Not because I didn't like it, but the exact opposite: I already preordered and the first 5 min of the demo gave me the final encouragement to wait for release day. Graphics are nice and even though performance mode is a bit softer, it sticks to 60 (few drops to 56 in my quick look, but my TV has VRR) and that's it.

Played 30-40 minutes of the demo. This made it go from day 1 to wait and see.
The image quality in performance mode is horrible, this is easily one of the blurriest games I've tried on Ps5. I'm done supporting games that make me choose between 30fps or Ps3 era image quality, specially when it's not doing anything particularly impressive with the visuals (tons of low res textures and low poly geometry, terrible LOD draw distance).
Also makes me question how much padding and filler they'll add. It's only the prologue and they already added that hilariously low effort mako vacuum padding
The piano minigame is awesome though.

I really hope it's an older build like some people were saying, otherwise I might hold off in the hopes they pull a Jedi Survivor and have some substantial improvements a few months after launch

I'd be really surprised if it's more than like upscaled 900p

As in the game starts off this way? I assume you have to make your way over to Kalm first and then the Inn and then you get this flashback.

Still the beginning of the game but i would feel weird if it just drops you off in that flashback right at the start.
Flashback is the literal start of the game and you never have to play it again if you have played the demo.

Watch the intergrade ending. There is no hike to Kalm in Rebirth. Open world gets introduced way more epic.

Finished the demo. Thoughts below:

Pros:
  • Story-telling: Liked the demo's approach of Cloud telling the party about the past and we getting to live it.
  • Characters: The demo did a good job of showing the personalities of different characters.
  • Cinematography: Some great camera work in the cutscenes.
  • Music
  • Combat: Combat seems a little less stiff compared to Remake? Like the perfect guarding. Keen to see more.
Cons:
  • Gameplay other than combat
    • everything feels so slow like slow climbing, slow going down ladders, slow walking segments, slow narrow gap crossings, slow to sit down on benches, slow to get up, slow menu opening, etc
    • who thought that slow mako energy removal stuff was a good idea?
    • Pointing your character towards a treasure chest is a mini-game in itself.
  • Slow walking segment near the end of the demo is a very poor implementation.
Definitely enjoyed my time overall, and really wanted to dive more in to the combat. Really looking forward to the Junon demo which will be coming up next.

Just based of what I've read and some screenshots, the performance mode is probably about native 900-1080p and then upscaled using some solution. Locked to 60. The quality mode is probably about 1440p. Locked to 30. It could by dynamic so sometimes higher than 1440p. DF will confirm but I only think they'll analyse the final code and not the demo.

Yes it definitely is. Geometry is much higher in FF16 (compare an house in FF7R to a house in FF16 where you have ultra minute geometrical details on the bricks, floors, etc..), textures are sharper, and lighting, especially shadow quality, looks a gen ahead in the case of FF16. Just compare the cave with crystals in the Rebirth demo with the ones you can find in FF16 and you will see what I mean

Although I agree FF7Rebirth has a larger scope, and so maybe cannot be authored the same way FF16 was

That's what they do. It literally is the start of the game. And IMO it does feel weird. Making your way over to Kalm is explained via the DLC where they hitch a ride with Chocobo Bill to Kalm, which I myself forgot about until a poster reminded me of it.

I really hated the Mako cleanup.. At least make it faster or something. When I did the first section of it, I thought to myself "weird, I see that cable.. but it doesn't seem to be hindering me.." and sure enough, second time around *you'll have to find another way around, the cable is restricting your access*. LOL I knew it was coming. To me that was one of the absolute weirdest experiences in the demo.

Don't think so, but there will probably be some minor differences.

I just went back and loaded up ff16 to compare and i cannot agree here. We just might have to agree to disagree.

We'll see but I think the final build will largely be the same. I think the occurances of some low res textures are just the trade off of creating a very large game world with towns and unique locales within a 4-5 year window. The overall visual presentation is still great.

Probably right about this IMO. I think it's fine. Some distracting elements here and there, but the game is lining up to be quite large.. we'll see soon.

Loving this demo and already hooked.

Played on both graphics/performance to see which one I like. Either is acceptable for me. It will probably be the first game where I switch between the modes depending on what I'm doing.

The FF16 demo sold me on a game i had no interest in.

The FF7 demo dissuaded me from buying a game i had been looking forward to for the last 4 years.

By the time the demo ended, I was pretty much done with the game. I had zero interest in the story or the gameplay. I didnt want to play it. I was hoping there was no more boss battles after you got to the Jenova room and i was still disappointed when the game switched to cutscenes and made me watch this trash for 15 more minutes.

Sephiroth's sudden turn to evil made no sense either. Oh I am a machine. I was created, not born. So now i must kill innocent civilians. Wow, amazing character development. This is like something devs wouldve written in 1995 which i guess it was but it doesnt work 30 years later.

I loved FF7 but this felt like a huge misstep. Camera during combat is pulled back too much. i cant see shit. Characters are zigzagging everywhere. Bosses are moving too much. I miss the tank bosses who at least were fun to fight.

XVI's demo was the most tricked I ever felt going into a game. The Prologue of XVI is 10/10 material, then the rest of the game is a 6/10. I thought we had a potential masterpiece on our hands after playing that demo, I truly want to know what the fuck happened there.

FFXVI is worse on all occasions for me. With Rebirth I know I get a more challenging game with more fun battles. Since Remake was already that. On top of that, the world is actually open here, but gated by story progression. Its not like FFXVI's separate fields with nothing to do or find and no area is connected since they all take you back to the map screen. VII has weapons with different properties, materia combinations, equipment with pros and cons and a ton of minigames to do.

Simply put I liked Remake already better than FFXVI so Rebirth should be better than that game at the bare minimum.

You can descend ladders fast by holding LS or O I think.

The slow walking is my biggest issue with the demo. I hated it in Remake and I hate it here. But okay, this is the opening chapter. Its quite cinematic. I hope its heavily reduced from there on.

I'm curious if there are still people left who don't know the twist from the original, especially with the recent release of the Crisis Core remake, or the way they handled the ending of FFVII Remake, because boy does the flashback in Rebirth makes it even more obvious if you're paying close attention.

I'd still rather play this section in it's original intended format/placement within Rebirth.

SE doesnt know storytelling anymore.
I like the demo a lot (dont really know why) , but I agree on everything you said.

The snapping of Sephirot is not well made. They tried so hard making him look like a normal human that suddently killing civilians like this feels totally out of place.
Also, it is one of the most memorable events in gaming. That thing deserved a CGI. But we got an in-game cutscene, with average graphics, and shoe-horned gameplay mixed in.

I dont know who is responsible of those decicions, but man, he should not direct more FF games.
 
Enjoyed the demo, but more of the same as part I, for better or worse.

The SE game design philosophy of style over substance continues to produce beautiful but empty vistas.

Gives me actual FF vibes, though.

It does in the real game as you would need to journey to Kalm and get to the inn, but this picks up basically with Cloud retelling the Nibelheim incident immediately. That's how the game starts and if you search around a bit you can see Square themselves call this "the opening chapter". Plus, Intermission puts them at Kalm, so it's not much of a skip. I think it's kind of awkward, but.. is what it is.

That was horrible. Cloud moved so slow. I’d rather push objects in TLoU.

I'm not sure how you've interpreted this.

That was never the point, he turns against humanity as he learns Jenova was imprisoned by the Ancients/humans and so seeks revenge as he believe that she is his mother and therefore he's also a superior being to humanity. So it's fuelled by revenge and hatred and that he planet is his birth right etc... This has always been explicit.

I think its much better this way. In the original you just run from Midgar to Kalm with nothing happening. And in Kalm nothing happens too except for the Inn part with the flashback. If this was unaltered in Rebirth they had to let you walk a bit from Midgar to Kalm, and then put you into the flashback.

I liked what I saw in the preview. You can do activities in Kalm which is a fleshed out town now, and finally after some cinematic stuff you're sort of funneled towards the world map Oblivion style.

In the original she barely knew Sepiroth and joined the journey because she wanted to find out more about herself and the Cetra. Cloud tells his story in Kalm because he is basically the only one who can bring any information about what the deal with Sephiroth is and how it can be that he is still alive even though he allegedly died.

But with the final chapter of Remake the roles completely shifted. Aertih should be the most important person to tell her ties with Sepiroth since Chapter 18 of Remake showed she clearly knows by far the most about him at this point.

So far, yep. But there's no real conclusion so it's possible she drones on about it after the sequence concludes.

That still doesn’t make any sense though.

Sephiroth is never established as being someone vindictive or even resentful of humanity. He doesn’t struggle with some internal conflict about pretending to be a hero or feeling better than others, nor does he seem concerned with ruling anyone. If anything he seems to have a respect for those weaker than him, humans included, and shows outright disdain for those that don’t respect life (i.e. Hojo). It doesn’t track that he would go from that to suddenly worshiping Jenova, a being solely dedicated to the corruption and eradication of life.

What’s more is Jenova wasn’t even his mother, which he would know after reading for 3 days about his conception. Lucrecia was his mother and Jenova cells were added after the fact while he was in the womb.

His turn was weak, especially with how well Rebirth established him as a good man. “Oh shit, I got da alien in me” is not going to sell such a sudden and drastic change with no setup.

IT IS A GREAT thing!!! Remake and Rebirth are the most beautiful games out there right now. The only problem I have is IQ on performance mode is much softer than Remake. I pray they fix this.

I'm currently finishing up Intergrade on PS5 using performance mode and can definitely tell that IQ is not as sharp as other games. Still looks great mind you, but it's nowhere close to 4k (at least based solely on visual judgment)

i upgraded to a 65 inch oled from a 55 inch last year and quite a few ps5 games look so soft and low res. kinda wished i stayed at 55inch. Mid gen i usually go upgrade and go PC. Now with most games coming to PC i guess its better than ever. Probably will get a 4070 super to upgrade my 2070 super.

It does look great and honestly the only need to change is the IQ for performance mode or hopefully ps5 pro can run both games including part 3 graphics mode 60 fps

Gast was incorrect about Jenova. He found this ancient being preserved in the ice of the north pole from 2000 years ago. He naturally but ignorantly concludes it must be a Cetra. What else would it be?

Gast finds Ifalna, the last living Cetra. She knows the truth about Jenova and tells Gast- Jenova is actually an alien that survives by crashing into living planets in the form of a meteor and feeds on the energy (lifestream) the planet sends to the crater to heal itself. It has the power to infect organisms with a virus and transform them into monsters and it can shapeshift into any virtually organism it wants. It's extremely dangerous and he's basically bringing it back from the dead.

Gast tries to shut down his Jenova project. Shinra says fuck that and Hojo takes over. Gast and Ifalna flee and go into hiding. Hojo uses Jenova to create Sephiroth.

30 years later, Sephiroth finds and reads all of the notes in Shinra Mansion. Much of them are Gast's incorrect notes he had to leave behind when he fled. This is why Sephiroth believes Jenova is a Cetra. He sees in Hojo's notes that genetically he does have a lot of Jenova's DNA in him. Therefore he continues to believe that Jenova is literally his mother. And since he does have a lot of Jenova's DNA, he shares some of Jenova's key traits, such as the instinctive behavior of using a meteor to damage a planet and then absorb its energy. Jenova is a parasitic organism and its sole purpose is to crash on a planet, feed on its lifestream, and move on to the next planet. Like a virus, it has no will or motivation beyond the need to sustain itself.

The original game made it ambiguous as to whether Sephiroth was even in control of his actions. I've always preferred the interpretation that Sephiroth was manipulated by his own DNA and that he has no will of his own. He's just a conduit for a parasitic organism and his ultimate motivation is the same: Injure the planet and feed on its lifestream.

Take the 4070 Super ti for the 16 GB of video ram. Its at least a bit more future proof. 12 GB can already be a struggle for native 4K in some titles.

Back to topic. Is graphics really all that important you guys? Like is there nothing else in the world. Is it impossible to have fun if the game is not running at 4K60...

Or are you bored and just want to complain about something to convince yourself to not buy the game. Its hard for me to wrap my head around the statement of "Oh yeah its fun and the gameplay is good and its long and offers tons of value and has probably great characters and makes for a fun ride... but eh, image looks a bit soft, I'll pass". Like what?

Ok so I played the demo. I hear people say this game looks exactly like Remake with less improvements and they are right however……


IT IS A GREAT thing!!! Remake and Rebirth are the most beautiful games out there right now. The only problem I have is IQ on performance mode is much softer than Remake. I pray they fix this.

Are you really serious when you write something like that?

Because it really looks BAD, is shameful to be honest.

I'm currently finishing up Intergrade on PS5 using performance mode and can definitely tell that IQ is not as sharp as other games. Still looks great mind you, but it's nowhere close to 4k (at least based solely on visual judgment)

Remake is 1440p/60 on PS5, it's softer than 4k obviously but still much better than we have in this rebirth demo.

Y'all complaining about the graphics either played the Intergrade version on PS5, or have some rose colored memories about how the first game looked and played on PS4.

Why we need to compare it to PS4 version? PS5 version is running on the same hardware so this one should at least look on par if not better.

The original game made it ambiguous as to whether Sephiroth was even in control of his actions. I've always preferred the interpretation that Sephiroth was manipulated by his own DNA and that he has no will of his own. He's just a conduit for a parasitic organism and his ultimate motivation is the same: Injure the planet and feed on its lifestream.
Right, as far as I can tell you and I are pretty much in exact agreement. Though for me it's not so much that Sephiroth had no will of his own, it's that thanks to his Jenova DNA, his will and Jenova's will are the same thing. He just isn't aware of that because the full history Ifalna told Gast isn't in any of the notes he read.
