Judging from a few vids, the chat screen seemed pretty congested. Not as bad as I remember FFXI being but still pretty busy. Is there any reason all the combat info is on the main chat screen by default? I can imagine it's harder to catch a /tell or something when the chat screen is whizzing by. The whole firstname-lastname thing is a little ridiculous as well. They could do more to help with communication (they are adding stuff for next phase I hear).

Partying will have to yield better results then solo, or nobody will group. People will always take the path of least resistance. If partying doesn't offer a substantial benefit, nobody will do it. Don't get me wrong, I want soloing to be viable, mainly bc I don't have the time to play that I used to have.

When playing XI, I turned the config settings to display damage on screen only (meaning just pop up numbers). Im sure they'll have something like that in XIV, which will work even better here with enemy status icons being visible.

Can you open multiple tabs now? Or is it still one window like FFXI? I would prefer to have combat info on a hidden tab, so I could always scroll back if I wanted to check something I missed on screen.

Btw here are some of the pics that Salaadin mentioned. I assume these are from Grindinia and Ul'dah regions?

Man games like WoW really will start to show their age. The amount of beta tickets are exploding on that wiki, I very much doubt I will get in at this point.

Im only at 80 tickets lol. So much for trying out the beta. This game cant come out soon enough. Collectors edition with release date delivery.

Thankfully wednesday is my day off from school too :D

Yeah theres general and battle tabs on chat. I'm guessing they'll let you apply filters to both eventually.

The plan was to only keep up with the GAF list and send tickets out accordingly, but now I got a bunch of randoms from the site sending tickets and expecting one back. I was thinkign about ignoring them, until I got this gem which made me feel guilty as fuck...

Hi! I sent you a FFXIV beta ticket some time ago. I haven't had any response from you yet... It would be nice of you to send a ticket back, I'd really appreciate it! I understand we don't know each other much (or at all), so don't feel any obligation! At any rate, I won't bother you again for tickets, I promise! I'm keeping track of all that with a spreadsheet. If you hate this contest, or me, for that matter, feel free to to let me know, or send me some other gift, it'd be fun to collect them all, too!
:lol

I hate contests. All this effort and I'm sitting ~90 tickets, while half the people on the site are in the several hundreds already.

I understand you wanna show your fan sites love SE, but how about throwing a bone to some people who signed up on your damn site over a year ago.

If you quote this, please remove the quote tags so it stays quotable for others. The best way is to probably just post your name and let me add you to the list in that post so we arent clogging this thread with lists of names.

I gifted any of the newcomers as well and any who gifted me.

I forgot that I was talking about those pics falas :D
I love the way Gridania looks (the first photo). Deserts look like too. No more dull Tahrongi Canyon!

I do hope we get some of the really white and sandy deserts that blind you when its sunny too in addtion to the Tahrongi/Meriphtaud look.

wow, its actually shocking how many people want a beta invite. I'm use to SE MMO's getting bad press and everyone hating on them. I'm actually worried if the community will stay the same, mature and most people were friendly after you got to know them.

Not that I mind....anything to increase the chances. I just wish they made it easier to send gifts back to people

I know lol. Its even worse on eorzeapedia with some users having 900+ tickets. Thats insane. Imagine having to send all of those tickets back. Im nearing 200 myself and am ready to cancel my gmail account.

I wouldnt worry to much about the userbase. Even in XI, you had your fair share of morons. If XIV is more popular, itll bring in more morons but there will still be some good people in there too.

I want to play the beta to decide if I buy the game or not. The beta is also the closest thing to a demo we will ever get.

They usually give you a free month to try the game. They did it with FFXI. The beta isn't a demo, it is not what the final game will be. Trust me on this. Beta is for helping the dev's get the game to retail. It won't be anything close to a demo. It has glitches and a lot of things not included that will be in the retail version.

I have a feeling more than half of the beta testers think its a demo and not that they are there to help SE improve the game...

edit: omg I just noticed! I'm a member now!!!!!!!!!! wow!

Free month after you buy the game. And this close to release, nothing really major will change from the way it will be in phase 3. It will be an extremely good representation of what the final game will be like. If I don't like the beta, I won't be buying the final. If I don't get to play the beta, I won't be buying the final. That simple really.

Haha, congrats Londa :lol I'm still working my way there. Not a big poster other'n threads that interest me, like this one.

Also, Salaadin, you do know that you can turn off email notifications for gifts on Eorzeapedia right? I'm nearing 100 tickets, and if I had left email notify on, I would have gone nuts.

Not really worried too much about getting ridiculous numbers... It'll just be all the more disappointing if you don't happen to get an invite if you work your ass off like that.

It will be an extremely good representation of what the final game will be like. If I don't like the beta, I won't be buying the final. If I don't get to play the beta, I won't be buying the final. That simple really.

Well some people here think its not :lol .

Regardless of sad or happy things with the final product, Square should not be proud of their coverage and updates and communication. The landscape for such fare has changed so much over the years, even the bit players are pulling off amazing jobs of keeping their userbase together and aware and taking the right feedback and making constant updates.

But looking at XIV it's just the same vague mess as XI was, which was still poor even when the rest of the MMO industry was shit in general for getting information across.

I saw the article where Eorzeapedia bashed on Game Informer for the lack of XIV coverage, made me laugh a little. I mean, Game Informer IS a rag but Square has done nothing to really solidify or promote this game.

I'm sure magazines are tired of running the exact same media and the exact same information, half of which is so poorly explained it is basically indecipherable to anyone who can't get hands on experience with it. That and when Tanaka actually does an interview, most of it is fluff and full of marketing speak. There's just no real reason to give what Square is offering to the media the time of day when every other dev is doing so much more to earn the spotlight.

I've been looking forward to this forever, so I still have good hopes and I'm sure it'll be fun, although not the overhaul I really want. Although I just cannot believe that this thing is out in September, it's had only a couple of version updates from alpha to now and basically no back and forth. It just seems like they're totally kicking out right out the door. It almost seems like they're content with just aiming for the same cult userbase, which is a shame, I really think they could do much better.

I'm actually worried if the community will stay the same, mature and most people were friendly after you got to know them.

FF14's community will be nothing like FF11's we can already tell this from just looking at the beta.

I know they plan to add most of the features in phase 3, linkshells etc but did they say anything about the AH, I am really worried they are going to launch without an AH feature.

As it stands im almost ready to cancel my pre-order.

You are the same people that swore that the controls would not be changed in such a small period of time. So honestly you have no idea what can be done. No one in here is a dev for a MMO. If people do want to bash the game. Good, less immature people to play with.

Jinko:

I dont remember them saying most features. I just remember them giving a highlight of some of them. But whatever. Its up to you what you want to do with your money. I mean even if you cancel your preorder that doesn't mean you can never purchase the game. If you never purchase if after preorder, then again its your money. There are other games to buy. Not everyone will like everything.

Kuraine: Thanks Kiraine, I feel the same about the forum. One of my favorite things to do is talk about games. I have very few friends that are into that. Most girls rather play facebook games. Guys never take me seriously enought to talk much about it. My boyfriend saids I have bad taste in games because I like Final Fantasy and RPGs. :lol

Rflagg: Thank you Rflagg :D

Alex: its like you have a love/hate relationship with SE....

Regarding the AH shenanigans... I'm pretty sure most MMOs post-WoW have attempted to do away with an Auction House type system so as to try and rekindle that player-player interaction for whatever nostalgic reason. I understand why they make that design decision, but it's fairly unrealistic for an MMO in the current climate; especially one that is a sequel to the game that had--imho--the best AH system currently out there.

Ultimately what happens to those games that launch without AHs, is that the player base is vocal on the forums, the developers get frantic, and eventually a slap-dash AH is put into the game. Hopefully S-E are mindful of this, because I honestly think their retainer system is not going to work.

Unless there's some sort of miraculous search feature, having tons and tons of identical trade halls filled with player-designed booths simply isn't going to be helpful to anyone trying to find what they want. Sure, there were famous bazaar characters in FFXI where you knew their location and could reliably buy certain things they sold, but did anyone really like browsing through hundreds of bazaars in Jeuno and on its borders? I know I thought it was tedious.

EQ2 tried a very similar type of "let's rekindle player-player sales!" system by allowing players to open up their player housing as a shop and "bazaar" their wares. You then searched for what you wanted, and it told you the physical address to go to. A waste of time, despite its desires to be a more in-character system.

tl;dr: Retainers are going to be too tedious to work long-term, so I hope S-E do decide against it being the main form of player trade.

iirc someone took a pic of it

Theres definitely icons scattered about that look like it.

Personally, I never minded the AH in FFXI too much. As long as RMT are kept in check, I dont see prices being too bad. SE should have a special task force in XIV right from the get go to really nail it from the start.

The only problem I had with the AH was when a new item would just come out, the first few morons to list it would charge astronomical prices for it and then impatient players would pay for it and make the initial price high until the hype died down and people started paying normal prices for it. Or when NPCs would have limited stock on an item so everyone would camp the NPC and buy out all of its stock and then list the same item on the AH for 5x the price.

I think if theres a balance of player to player sales, AH sales, and NPC sales, it wont be so bad. They just need to make the player sales easy to use and the NPC sales reasonable.

I think everyone agrees with the bold

But it would still be nice to have capped prices for items on the AH

Capped prices arent a bad idea. Have any MMOs successfully tried this before?

Ok, so you are an immature person if you have anything critical to say about the game, good to know, because obviously there can't be anything wrong with the game.

Controls are very easy to change. I never said that controls couldn't be changed, just that it didn't bode well for the game if the controls were still a fucking mess this close to release.

As for capping prices on an AH, it is just a dumb idea. Markets work themselves out in the long run, capping prices destroys the market (increased demand, decreased supply), just like in real life.

Do NPCs sell items that have worth like they did in FFXI? And do they only operate at certain in game hours? Making NPCs sell items that can be acquired elsewhere is a bad idea IMO.

Do you have any ideas about how they can make it better?

Im looking at FFXIAH right now and it seems t hat a lot of the stuff that was rare and expensive when I quit have come down in price considerably. I just wonder if FFXIV can launch with a similar "fair" market where sought after items arent going to cost you millions of gil or hours upon hours of farming items and then having to find a crafter to make something only for the synth to fail.

Perhaps thats why theyre making the crafts actual levellable jobs now. If theyre easier to gain levels in, there will be more out there so more items will be listed and the prices will be forced to drop.

Im starting to wonder if itll be best to start the game as a crafting job while everyone else levels so I can take advantage of their need for equipment and then start my fighting class as a rich man :lol

I think gathering will be the best money maker, I plan to split my time between leveling a DoW and a DoL.

I don't have any exact ideas. The thing I loved about FFXI was the fact that the game was so crafting heavy. The MMOs I've played since last playing FFXI have been more about getting a majority of your loot from monsters.

Capping prices is a bad idea though, because you limit the profit someone can make from an item. If something used to cost 20k to buy, but now is limited to like 8k you get more people wanting to buy that item, but fewer people willing to sell due to loss of profit. Another thing that FFXI didn't really do well is bleeding gil out of the economy. If there isn't a regular drain on gil exiting the game then inflation will occur.

edit: And that was another thing I had to say. Don't let the NPCs sell gatherable/harvestable/ect items. Let them sell unique items needed for crafting to help bleed out money. If the NPC can sell items that players are going to try and sell bad things happen (why pay 200g for something a player went and spent their own time gathering when a NPC sells it for 40g if I'm there at certain times?!?)

I hardly had time to play the beta so I didnt get to try a crafting job yet. I do plan on playing one though. I might actually go Marauder/Miner/Blacksmith or something like that. Use 2 crafts to supplement eachother or something....assuming that Blacksmiths will be using the ores gained from mining.

It would probably take the most time but is probably the most cost effective too.

Good points.

I liked the crafting in FFXI as well. I never skilled one but I often had crafters make me stuff out of the items I got on my own. It was almost always cheaper than the AH assuming you could find a fair crafter. My poor ass did hate how theyd charge extra if they HQed the synth though :lol I always had to make sure I had an extra stash of gil just in case something HQed.
