I feel like my DPS is poo as monk because of how many positionals I miss. It's half me still getting used to the crossbar layout and half being afraid to actually go to the flank in some bosses while everyone is gathered at the rear, but still a fairly large DPS loss sometimes.
You can stand right near the edge of flank/rear lines to stay close to group. Most fights that actually require you to stack have a predictable mechanic for it too so it's not a big deal if you are off to side a lot.

That said, another thing that could affect dps for physical is missing auto attacks. If you are on controller with legacy camera this is especially bad and easy to mess up. The game is really picky with auto attacks, if you aren't facing perfectly it will not go off, so you need to either strafe properly(difficult on controller with legacy) or use lockon so it autofaces you to target 100% of the time. It probably sounds/looks minor but auto attack is a huge chunk of dps for melee/bards.

Funny you mention that since I started using lockon like two days ago. I'm trying to figure out a better controller option to activate it, though, since if an AOE is going off and I need to unlock, it feels odd using L3 suddenly. Maybe I'm just not used to it.

But yeah that's been helpful. Again, no real way for me to measure DPS aside from my earlier joke suggestion about using enmity number so maybe it's not so bad. I'm geared up enough and my rotation feels fine so I think at the moment for me it's most the positionals.

While I'm on holidays I thought I should finally give FFXIV a go, as I've had it on steam for like 8 months but never played it. Trying to create my account but the confirmation email still hasn't been sent after 20min, I need to code in the email to go through the rest of the steps. Is that normal?

I did play the beta on PS4 earlier in the year, does that mean I needed a square-enix account for that, maybe I could use my old one?

Also can I use a PS4 controller natively?

Honestly reddit and the OF are about as good as it gets for this game so far. Will likely not see something better till the expac where it hopefully gets more attention from the more hardcore fans who are willing to put in the effort to make something better.

Thanks, I'm really loving the game as it really does feel like a Final Fantasy game some how but I'm really disappointed at how lacking the community and support for the game is =\

you call a big patch every 3-4 months a lack of support? wat
unless you mean support from the community, because yeah i admit the end game is quite elitist

SO I finally logged in and got all the updates, now it crashes everytime I try and go into fullscreen mode... Anyone heard about this issue before?

My lancer is level 27 and I feel like the game is finally starting to gain some depth. I'm glad I stuck with it. Reading over the last two pages I have pretty much no idea what most of you guys are talking about, but it sounds complicated.

I'm i112 and not even I know what goes on in this thread sometimes.

What's wrong with too much spell speed?! How do I even know I have too much?

spell speed is basically only good for blm and perhaps whm (not as much as blm though)
if you're none of those then ignore it

For Black Mage, it's actually just straight a DPS upgrade. For Summoners, it only really works on Ruin DPS which is the worst of our damage. Essentially, it's a damage stat in theory but won't ever actually add damage on a Summoner. Comes out to roughly ~1 INT per 10 Spell Speed (roughly 3 times worse than the other options).

In general, Skill Speed / Spell Speed just "borrows" DPS from later in the fight since you're still throttled by your resource. Black Mage circumvents this by being essentially resourceless.

Gtx 970. Borderless windowed works, I'll play for real tomorrow.

Before I make my character I'd like to focus on attack magic, so which race/class etc is suited to that?

Race is pretty much 100% cosmetics, pick something you like. For class, offensive casters are Summoner and Black Mage. Summoner has a pet and dots, Black Mage has fireballs and FLAAAAARE, more direct damage. Black Mage is a lot more static though, need to stand still to cast most of their stuff, but they have infinite mana and very good aoe and burst. Both are nice, matter of taste. For your starter choice, Thaumaturge > Black Mage and Arcanist > Summoner. Also to note, Arcanist is also Scholar, which means if you level Arcanist to 50, you get both Summoner and Scholar at 50. Useful if you want to check healing out at max level.

Awesome info, thanks mate.

Yeah. There's a difference between "That DPS is low and can be better" and "Time to shame the DPS." Honestly, for all the complaints about lol pug Tanks/Healers, DPS is hands down the absolute worst role I see in random DF Primals/Raid stuff. They have a lot less obvious feedback for underperforming compared to Tanks (lost aggro, taking tons of damage) and Healers (tank/party died).

This I can agree with. I don't mind if people say that my dps needs improvement and provide tips, but harassment and abuse is ridiculous no matter which role is being called out.

I always try my best on the game, but I know that I am not the best player either.

When I joined a dungeon a few days ago I met a Paladin who didn't use a shield. When I asked him why, he told me he doesn't need one.

Okay.

I used to hit L3 by accident when things got hectic, so I switched lockon to R3 a while ago and it works very well for me.

Speaking of shields, I have seen a rash of tanks not using shield lob/tomahawk lately and cannot understand it. I always use it when I tank and it seems silly to never use it. Am i wrong or am I just missing something?

Nope most everyone you see avoiding those skills are just bad tanks.

While leveling my WHM and NIN I have noticed a lot more people pulling mobs with Provoke lately and as a WAR main it really grinds my gears,

That's something I noticed as well. Maybe they want to save TP? I love using shield lob.

If you think thats weird, last night i had a PLD using sprint everytime it was off cooldown.

Sprinting from one pack of mobs to the other and using sword oath i was simply amazed..

Cool, glad to see I wasn't missing something. I have certainly seen tanks using provoke to lead, but the sprinter is something new. I mostly see them using flash or just using their combo exclusively. I had to tank a few low level dungeons with my BRD lately due to bad tanks like this.

The provoke action text is so bad though. That I can understand.

A THM that doesn't use Fire is stupid because the class quests explain how fire and blizzard work to you.

EDIT - I had a PLD in Ifrit HM yesterday who spent half the match casting Cure 1.

The only good thing about these players (I guess), is that they make me feel better about my own play. I am not a very good tank, but watching some of these players reminds me that I am really not as bad as I think.

Edit: Ugh, the BLM that only use Blizzard drive me nuts. Such a waste.

I hit 2000/2000 light. That was the worst grind ever.

I rather form a linkshell, get 30 members, force them to do Dynamis 2 days a week for 6 months, to give me enough currency for my relic in FF11 than see Garuda's dumb face again.

haha yeah it really doesn't sound much better than FFXI relic now that there are so many upgrades. I'm so glad I've decided to avoid relics I feel like it would kill the game for me entirely.

I am going to try and get Zenith on all classes, but whether I go any farther on my alt classes is a big if at this point. I just started the animus grind and I am already tired of fate camping. I will just go for the tomb weapons instead most likely.

Actually for big pulls, there's no need to waste time with Tomahawk, just run to them, Flash and keep running to pick up the rest.

Yeah I'm talking more about dungeons like Stone Vigil or something where we're not just running through destroying large packs of mobs. I've seen too many tanks using Provoke specifically to pull a single mob away from a group, then wonder why he's not holding hate. Still see a lot of people assuming it works like it did in FFXI.

That actually has its uses too. There's a point in Amdapor's Keep I think, the one with
Diablos
as boss where you need to pull a single enemy with Provoke, since you need to separate them from the rest and Provoke has a much bigger range than Tomahawk or Shield Lob. When it gets closer you can Tomahawk away.

I pull with provoke pretty frequently when I want to yank a patrol away from the group, then follow up with shield lob when it gets in range. Even if DPS starts pewpew immediately as long as I'm between the mob and the party I can usually get it back before things get too bad. Not following it up with anything is silly, but unless they want to buff the shield lob range I'm still gonna do it.
