If you say you're new, especially as a tank, people expect the worst. I don't mean like "did an ok job but lost aggro a few times and didn't dodge that one aoe", but like "have no idea what flash/overpower is". So if you play your role correctly and did a good job, people will tell you you did a good job. It might not have been the fastest speedrun ever, but most people only care about clearing stuff at an acceptable pace, not about beating some world record, so people doing their job well is more than good enough.

I see. I always assumed that when I said I was new to the dungeon, people only took that to mean that I was just unfamiliar with the encounters. I pretty much play PLD all the time so I can't say I've been in a position to play under a bad tank so I don't know how bad it can get.

I sometimes see people talk about how they managed to beat dungeons even though their tank was really bad/non-existent so I assumed it wasn't as bad as say someone who refuses to heal. But I can understand why it would suck for the squishier classes to have a tank that can't hold aggro at all or uses the wrong abilities all the time.

Terrible tanks make running an otherwise simple dungeon a complete chore for healers (and for the dps too). A lot of new tanks don't seem to know how to play their class properly.

I guess I had an advantage from the beginning since I was familiar with the concept of tanking from other MMOs/games and how threat/aggro works before I started playing this.

Is it wrong that I'm hoping 2.5 is kind of boring so that I don't get distracted from light farming? :V

Very wrong, but you'll probably get what you want. It seems like 2.51 is going to be the big time sink. 2.5 should be fun for a few days, but nothing they've shown thusfar has much longevity unless Odin is somehow acually difficult.

Odin starts with his OHKO move from the start and its a 5 second cast. He has more health than T13. GG SE. RIP.

Make the OHKO silencable/stunnable and I'd kind of be okay with that part.

Shiva has been more fun than Ramuh, but Ramuh seemed to take more time to really get down because it had more going on. My impression is that HM Titan was a bigger challenge at release than Shiva EX was on patch day. That's just messed up.

Maybe I just really want Savage Mode primals. That nobody would ever run.

Titan HM is a special case though, sure it was only HM, but at release no one had good gear yet, and most people were fighting the boss at the intended ilvl or close to. Shiva EX a lot of people who had been clearing T9 were already overgeared for it. Sure it drops i120 bracelets, but the fight isn't balanced for i120 at all. If you tried Shiva EX at i100, I think it'd be a lot closer to Titan difficulty, but still more recoverable.

Yeah they would really have to tune a new primal hard to get it to the level that Titan HM was at launch. Just getting to the HP threshold where you could survive Titan's stomps was a long slog. And by long slog I mean countless WP and AK speedruns. Not to mention Myth was capped at 300 then.

But that's the same thing as the hard mode dungeons--they'd be hard... If everyone was in gear from four months ago. They're tuning this content to be easy unless you're substantially behind on gearing, which is an odd choice.

I should have done more iLevel checking in the early days of Shiva. I know I did a bunch of clears in the first few weeks with people wearing a lot of ST stuff, and I think in one case somebody brought an i55 GC weapon and it still wasn't really a huge deal.

So my friend wants to try this game and is downloading the free trial on ps4 right now. If he should like the game he plans to get the full game by buying the much cheaper ps3 version and then upgrading to the PS4 version.

The question is whether it's possible to play the trial on PS4, buy the PS3 version and then upgrade to the PS4 version while retaining his character data from the trial? I know this question is kinda specific but maybe anyone here has done this?

Yes, I did this. Played trial on PS4, got the GOTY (90 days of sub) for PC for 9€, then got the PS3 version for 5€ (30 day sub) and upgraded it instantly to PS4. Feelsgood.gif

We wiped to enrage a few times, though that was also just a lot of "oh look everyone died / got frozen multiple times" as well.

Yeah, I remember that one took forever but I also remember LB3ing on most if not all enrage runs which meant we had bigger problems than DPS/gearing (that group I think only had 1 T9 cleared character in it, too, so it's not like HA weapons were carrying.)

I can't recall ever hitting enrage without a ton of mechanics failures, regardless of who was in the party.

So you're saying you can carry my BRD through Shiva farming, while I wear SB gear.

Make me my forager's sledgehammer and we'll talk.

I mean, from what I remember of your clear we just sort of slid your corpse through, so how much worse could spiritbonding Bard be?

Just kidding! Please still crafter things for me.

No idea what's going on, but the One-Time Password app on my phone (Verizon LG G2) has reset on me twice in the past 12 hours; and now I can't log in because I can't do the emergency removal twice in 24 hours. Now I'm just tempted to get the physical keychain since this is the third time it's happened overall.

Thanks for buying that first batch of FC3s I made from the wedding gear vendor.

I should have given it all to you, had some ass-hat /tell me "How does it feel buying all those FC3's"

Considering I sold my first 3 Kirimu Coats for a total of 40 mil... not too bad lol

Honestly, while I'd love to see Greg weapons, I'm not expecting it. I am however expecting an Enkidu minion, the chicken not the actual Enkidu.

Still wondering what ilvl the Odin weapons are going to be this time, probably 120 but I'd still like confirmation. Also, what that mystery trial is, and if it'll drop anything.

Also, just occurred to me that I can farm WoD for an Encrypted Tome stone. Guess I should save up my tomes and get the weapon for my DRG. I mean, to get me by until I can have a crack at the Dreadwyrm Spear. <_<;; *Crosses fingers.*

I don't think Sony have grasped that the times you give for scheduled maintinence should last longer than the actual time needed for maintinence.

"To the victor goes the Treaty-Blade!"

That is Ashe's sword from FF12. So I guess that as a quest reward and maybe an Enkidu minion to roll on.

I'm guessing the quest reward will probably be a title, not the treaty blade itself; Enkidu minion does make the most sense though.

Greg should drop i12 weapons, but I'm guessing will be just like Ultros. Everyone will do it for the minion then done.

I think i120 from Odin or Mystery Trial is a given, although they could go the Shiva route and have i115 drop and later patch in upgrade items (or drop 120 and upgrade to 125) since both mid-patch primal upgrade (Ramuh Rings, Shiva weapons) did a decent job of breathing some later life into them.

Tome system still in place, it's just jumped up in item level. You can get i100-i110 range pretty fast if you are dedicated. If the patch next week follows usual trend, it will be even easier since they will buff the tome drop rate for the non weekly capped tomes(the capped ones are i120-130). There's also more avenues for gear outside of just tomes then at launch, with the two(soon three) crystal tower instances as well as hunts.

You can do pretty much all current content sans maybe the final two turns in full i110 too, so in other words, yeah you can jump into current content fairly fast if you want to.

i dont know what tomes are at all, I quit before my original 30 days was up and I ran maybe 2 or 3 dungeons. they were taking like 30+ minutes, we were getting 1 from the end boss or something, so I said fuck it

I also remember cheesing it and just breaking LOS and running to the end or something?

were tomes the currency for darklight armor?

edit: yes they were. I guess I just run end game dungeons for tomes and buy gear? do I get more than 5 a week or whatever it was?

This link might be helpful.

Slightly OT in the OT, but if any Ultros GAF members (or XIV players in general) will be at PAX South next week, please get in touch to meet up. I'll be there Friday afternoon until Saturday night (leaving after my panel ends). You can just PM me if you wish.

The tomes back then were Philosophy and Mythology, you could get unlimited Philosophy (which was used to buy Darklight gear) but only 300 Mythology (used to buy AF2). Back then the name of the game was grind on AK in order to get philosophy. And yeah, large death pulls to skip armies of trash and just kill bosses was usual strategy.

The idea is same as back then, run dungeons and buy gear, but they changed the time commitment quite a bit. They ended up buffing the amount of philosophy you got a by huge amount after you left, so it was less of a grind. Eventually they upped the weekly tome cap from 300 to 450 as well, so it took less time to gear the higher set as well. Since then both philosophy and mythology have been removed for a new set (Soldiery is essentially new Philosophy/unlimited a week and Poetics is new Mythology, 450 a week) but it's effectively the same thing. There's also a roulette system in place that you can do once a day, earning bonus tomes and adding some variety instead of same dungeon over and over.

The other big change was in terms of dungeon design, they are generally much shorter and with less trash mobs so the average run is like 20 minutes. Body pulls to the end don't work anymore but since dungeons are short it's not a big deal anyway.

I'm farming soldiery while trying to complete the story. It takes a while to find people for some of the fights. It takes longer to wait than to beat them The one with the first general dude took 45 min to find and we cleared it in 5 min or less?

It was fun though as I think it's the first battle with 8 people.

that's probably cape westwind, yeah nobody does it willingly anymore except when you got it from trials roulette
generally for really old content you should just queue from the duty finder, yeah it'll take some time (30 minutes if lucky, should be less than an hour max) but it's still faster than party finder

I am thinking about picking this up for the PS4 during the sale. I already own it for the PC, but have not played since a couple months after launch. I have a couple of questions:

1) If I purchase the PS4 version, do I still get a free month?

2) How does this play on the PS4? I have a decent PC and it played well, but for only $8 more I could have access to the PS4 version if a free month is included.

3) How screwed am I for having taken such a long break? I was tempted to start over again on the main GAF server. I feel like I need a fresh start after not playing. Is the game relatively noob friendly?

Thanks!

1. Yes. I also just bought the PS3 version -> free upgrade to PS4, and my account got an additional month. Make sure you're registering for the same account.

2. Smooth 30fps (60 fps in dungeon i think). Good control when you're used to it. You can also use KB/M on PS4.

3. I also stopped playing for about a year. What I did was running simple low level dungeon in DF and work my way up to more difficult ones to re-learn the stuff.
