does anyone have any tips for how to be a good DPS?

As you're leveling up, it's not going to be terribly important to be doing max DPS all the time--you're essentially in a learning phase. As you level up, the game is giving you new skills slowly so that you can get accustomed to each one and how to best use it. The real puzzle in MMOs is when you get to max level and are tasked with figuring out the most optimal way to use all the skills presented to you up to that point.

What it comes down to is you need to have a good grasp on the game's damage mechanics, and a good idea of how to use the skills you've been given to work with those mechanics in a way that is maximizing the attack potency per second.

Ultimately, this stuff has all been figured out by countless people before and there is a ton of information out there on whichever class you've picked on how to be putting out the biggest numbers. I'm not a summoner specialist myself but they have one of the more fluid 'rotations' of any of the DPS classes, since they mainly revolve around keeping up their DOT abilities.

But for right now, just focus on leveling up and pay close attention to each new ability you get and the things it does. And remember that just because you get a new ability with a bigger number tacked onto it (Like Bio vs. Bio II) doesn't mean the old one is obsolete. FFXIV doesn't work that way. In that specific case, Bio and Bio II can be applied to the same target for big DOT damage along with Miasma.

When you hit 50, then it might be time to look around on Reddit for some summoner tips or ask a well-versed summoner in-game.

The other day I'm driving around, I see this place

Scary times.

Boring. I found this a few weeks ago:

In case anyone was actually wondering, they sell coffee and related things at the Illy Shop.

This is Stefan from the FC.

So I finally made it out of the early game darkness, and they're letting me do light party raids now (I'm around level 20 Arcanist).

So my question is, does anyone have any tips for how to be a good DPS?
I almost never play MMOs, or games with this type of party strategy.
EDIT: basically what Haman said.
Fights will probably go smoother if everyone attacks the same target (although at level 30 you'll get Bane, which copies Bio, Bio 2, and Miasma from your current target onto a few nearby enemies). If the mobs start attacking you, don't panic but instead guide it to the tank. Preferably, use the green pet in dungeons rather than the yellow one as you will have a person being tank, but you can switch them if your party is in a pinch.
Even though you're dps, as arcanist you have physick and from level 22 you have resurrect - don't be afraid to use them (especially if the actual healer has fallen).
As a dps your limit break (orange/red crossed-swords icon) is usually preferred over the tank's or healer's. As a caster yours is a ground-targeted area-of-effect attack.
Also, even though arcanist is a caster, you can go into melee range and hit the enemy with your book for fun and profit (well, a little extra damage).

Had a WoD run yesterday, me being Team A tank at Cerb I waited a few seconds for Team C to have a chance at gaining aggro (he didn't) so someone went mad on chat and I quickly got him.

Got to adds and the same person is screaming at me because I'm not getting adds. I asked Team B where he is at and he replied 'in belly'.

Apparently it was all my fault. I love WoD.

Oh great, now I don't have to yell STOP THE DEEPS at the group. Guess it's time to get the final 3 ponies.

The drop rates for the following Extreme primal battle rewards have been increased:
Aithon Whistle / Xanthos Whistle / Gullfaxi Whistle / Enbarr Whistle / Markab Whistle / Boreas Whistle

Hmm...to pony farm or not to pony farm?

Do it. Been trying to get Kirin and even made a static for it. This will help. :p

As for the t13 "nerf", it isn't really a nerf -- it helps to avoid those awkward phase transitions it would sometimes cause.

Time to finish up my crafters tomorrow.

I just don't get SE sometimes. They fix this, but not similar issues in T5, T9 and Ramuh. How come? These can cause awkward wipes just as well.

The Last Pre-Echo T12

Highlights include random tank suicide at 6 minutes in, and the other tank apparently getting jealous and just straight-up DCing at 8 minutes in. That he continued to fight and even winds up MTing for 15 seconds while never actually reconnecting is kind of impressive.

It was actually pretty fun, given that for three solid minutes I was expecting somebody to call a wipe any minute. But no.

On patch notes:

The lack of nerfs is sort of nice, albeit a little confusing. Is DF going to delay T11 groups until it can match a caster with every group? I know no-caster is easily doable, but there's a world of difference between coordinated killing the adds with communication and just randomly hoping the group on the sphere lets the cube catch up. Trash is also going to be potentially crazy imbalanced without a caster.

I'm hoping the notes are complete and there are no stealth nerfs--T12 and T13 will be made a *lot* easier with 10% echo (do you even know how much HP I will have now OMG), and getting to mess around with the original mechanics a while longer could be interesting.

The one Nerf I asked for and got.

I did not expect it to be the only one though. That's crazy.

Edit: angary, that HUD. God lord. Shrink some of that.

The Shadow of Meracydia will no longer appear when Bahamut casts Gigaflare a second time in the Final Coil of Bahamut – Turn 4.

What? What does that even mean?
They removed Twin completely from spawning?
Can't be..that would be retarded tbh.

Or did they mean a dps timing issue and fixed it because of echo?

Totally confused..

On another note: We were raiding and during T13 divebombs I all of a sudden a freaky voice shouts in my headphones: CONGRATULATIONS, YOU WON A TROPHY! Freaked me the hell out.
Thanks Roccat for trolling me with mouse achievements! :p

The second gigaflare signaling dive bomb phase can be pushed early since its trigger is HP% based, but the third shadow was independent of whether or not there was a third rage which made the transition tricky especially with most groups able to push early having to hold back. Most likely less a difficulty nerf and more of a "this was not how we intended the phases to go" kind of thing.

Also twin is storm, not shadow

Also also patch notes with them FCOB spoilers rip.

Half a year just isn't enough to figure things out....or even almost 2 years when some could put 2 and 2 together as to why the raid was called what it was. Kind of funny how it's some major spoiler in this, yet in WoW people don't even think twice about it and they end up looking at the spoilers as soon as someone cleared things. Maybe it's because Metzen's writing is just that obvious for Blizzard games? Then again quite a bit has been written on the walls for a while here also.

The only thing I'd probably consider a spoiler is how you fight Bahamut. I still remember the speculation it'd be some grand battle with the 1:1 scale Bahamut.

Oh, and I think something like Phoenix is a legitimate spoiler.

Oh well, bring on
Brayflox Prime.

I have to say, I wish they made him bigger. At least the scale of the Steps of Faith Dragon..Obviously that would create camera issues etc etc..but still...

I can't wait for Selene T12s with 10% echo

Three Bennu dream!!

Still a few months out so I guess they want people to have some reason to keep playing?

They just added the reason for some to keep playing. Echo and Final Coil DF is like.... the end? I'm pretty sure they usually lifted cap way earlier in patch cycle.

Qhon, Zan, and I just did a T11 in DF and it did indeed give us 3 physical and 1 magic dps.

Also gave us a tank who may or may not have been a joke character (PROBABLY NOT)

accuracy caps dweeb

So got a funny glitch (edit: read: me being stupid moment) in Amdapor Keep:

I was not selecting myself or anything but this arrow was stuck on me for the rest of the dungeon.

I was like "Maybe this glitch is a prelude to my Zodiac drop"

I got my drop.

:D

Is that your UI?

clean that shit [up]

No. The only thing on there I don't constantly need is the Duty List, and I have to turn it on for 12 for easy Bennu timing recognition.

The most important thing about my UI is: I have all that shit going on and have no problem keeping track of lalafell on-screen. So imagine my complete eye roll every time somebody uses the "I couldn't see you!" Excuse.

I can't wait for Selene T12s with 10% echo

Three Bennu dream!!

Man at some point I am clicking echo off and doing it. We've come within a few percentage points with suboptimal class stacking, so it seems achievable.

With 10% echo it should be kind of easy? I think?
