Only played a few hours so far.
Ya know, for as much goofy, awkward shit is in this game (and there is a lot)...I'm enjoying myself quite a bit. There's this weird sort of charming, arcadey quality to it and I really like the atmosphere. The sort of Japanese take on broken down americana reminds me of stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Dragon Ball, and the road trip vibes really work for me. I dig that your companions are constantly talking and stuff, it actually makes them feel like characters (which is good because so far other than that the story is doing no favors to them or any other character). I like to combat too. At first I didn't know what the fuck I was doing, but some of the more challenging hunts have been fun. Hopefully it gets a little deeper in terms of move sets and strategies later on, but for early game I'm pleasantly surprised.
Stuff I don't like:
-Plot. Yeah, not much to go on here.
-Quests seem pretty barebones and NPCs are super dull.
-Cindy. What the fuck.
-NPCs look like they are from a different game.
-I will never like the anime as fuck over designed boy band look these dudes are rocking.
-Running around vast stretches of nothing. Traversal should be more fun and snappier if they don't let you take the car off road. I know you can rent chocabos later on, but I imagine you'll still be doing a lot of holding O to go over flat, barren ground, and back again.
-The world is gorgeous, and I like the art style, but it's pretty barren with not many points of interest outside of the lovely and homey outposts thus far. (I really do dig the look of the land tho, like those crumbling power line poles where you start out).
So yeah, enjoying myself more than I thought, but if the story doesn't pick up or the quests, I could definitely see myself tiring of this sooner rather than later.
