Final Fantasy XV |OT| There and back again.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
This is one of the many things I missed from Final Fantasy, and thank goodness this game delivered.

Yeah. I missed FF's weird/quirkiness. FFXII and FFXIII (especially XII) were a bit too serious for FF and lacked the weirdness.

Wtf is happening to the story!?!? These jumps from ch 10 or so onwards, wtf??

Man if this story was more consistently great it could've been something like no other. A legendary recipe cooked on a rickety stove.

That said I'm still only on Ch. 9. But if there was more gravity, more weight dedicated to its plot and storyline from what I've gathered thus far, and more screentime given to intimate moments or noteworthy scenarios the game would be as doggedly emotional a ride as it is an entertaining one.

Its character is no joke though. There's magic in the little things it does and the relationship between Noctis and co., and the amount of detail and eyecandy surrounding them, keeps my eyes and heart glimmering.

But that's it from me for now. I shouldn't speak too much 'til I reach the ending and all's said and done.

Yeah, I mentioned this on the other thread. I was really missing these kinds of lighthearted moments in the series. Like in FFVII, a Meteor is about to collide with the planet! Everything will be destroyed!

But first let's go to the Gold Saucer and race some Chocobos!

I'm grateful that XV returned back to its origins.

Why, is Ignis not driving enough as it is? You need more roads?

Why don't you just answer the question instead?

Chapter 7.

There really should be some way to pass the time for time-crucial missions. It's inexcusable when that exact feature exists for hunts.

There's actually a camp spot in there. There are a bunch of camp spots within some of the dungeons, which I guess is a throwback to tent areas in old Final Fantasies.

Yeah, no. You can make an RPG with cohesive art direction and pleasing world logic. Ni No Kuni is an example, Pokemon is an example, Dark Souls is an example. You're not feeding stray cats and you don't have completely clashing aesthetics everywhere.

Your picks for jRPGs seem like genre-outliers. Something along the lines of "a prince takes time off his adventure to feed a stray cat" would be right at home in games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Grandia, Suikoden, Xenogears, Xenoblade, etc etc. And yes, it would be right at home in any FF before this.

Many great criticisms of XV in this thread... but your "aesthetic" concerns are basically complaining about FF for being FF.

Thanks Ultros for the answer but you made it kind of obvious how many there are by the way you phrased your non-spoiler text :p

Also, honestly, if Chapter 4
plus the nonsensical jump afterwards
made me this disappointed and upset, I'm pretty scared for my reaction to the rest of the plot.

Seriously, Chapter 4 alone:

Alright, alright, so we're following Ardyn in his car. It's very strange, and I like how Gladio points out "this isn't normal." But...

1. Ardyn flat-out uses his first name. And no one recognizes him or even his first name? LOL. It's a stretch, but okay. I honestly don't know how technology is used in this game. Noctis doesn't use his cell phone at all but he is able to talk to Cor on the phone when he's right outside Insomnia. Hasn't seen or talked to Luna in 12 years and communicates with her through a dog that carries a book, but is able to randomly get a call from Iris. I guess Luna doesn't have access to a cellphone? For whatever reason??? Gladio gets texts from Iris as well, apparently. Very messy. Obviously this stuff has to do with rewrites but it's obvious that the writers made zero efforts into making the rewrites coherent.

2. Ardyn suggests to take a rest, for like, no apparent reason. You camp, and then you see during the "results" screen that they're talking to Ardyn. They were technically with this guy for at least a few hours, but we don't experience any of this very strange scenario. And the game pretty much ignores this fact, and the dialogue with and about him shortly afterwards acts like it didn't really happen.

3. Ardyn leads them to the gates of the Disc. The gate opens up immediately, and right afterwards we see Niflheim airships. And yet no one outright states that it's an insanely obvious trap, and Prompto even defends Ardyn when Gladio suspects what just occurred to be suspicious?

4. the fight with Titan seemingly randomly ends. Like seriously, it was so abrupt and random. When the game told me I have the power to summon Titan I was like, huh, that's it? It was definitely rushed.

5. So Ardyn picks them up, and then the next scene is just them chilling, except without a car.

?????????????????????????????????????

What?????????????

So yeah, if I'm this upset over the writing (and presentation) in Chapter 4 and the beginning of 5 I'm pretty scared for the rest of the game.

Doing that same exact mission and currently waiting for daylight because I'm hoarding EXP and can't camp out lol. Is there a boss on this mountain? I noticed the huge bird's nest and lots of open space. Perfect for a boss fight.

Unfortunately, you haven't really seen anything yet. What you're describing just occurs more often and gets magnified later on.

It's so hard to pull myself away from doing all these sidequests and just advance the plot.

I even started fishing, which I usually hate in games. Spoilers,
fishing is awesome!

The only things that bug me is ignis telling me over and over that i shouldnt drive at night. Another thing that irritates me is the airship keeps dropping enemies and i get surrounded by beast and like 20-30 soldiers. Another airshio will come when i am currently fighting soldiers.

Anyone have any tips for optional dungeon boss
Nagatari
(or something similar)?

Because I've been fighting it for ages and the fucker just healed itself. And constantly casting toad on me is not fun. Any means of preventing healing? If not I'm pretty much fucked.

As soon as the airships start showing up, all warnings of the dangers of hanging out at night go out the window. To be honest, nighttime was never all that dangerous.

Now there's level 50 guys with guns spawning on top of me every minute, even when on a road, and nobody's acknowledging that there's no safe time to adventure now.

So yeah, if I'm this upset over the writing (and presentation) in Chapter 4 and the beginning of 5 I'm pretty scared for the rest of the game.
It gets so much worse.

They still had their moments. Besides FFXIII has the iconic "Snow trying to punch Dysley but getting blown back" every single time you encounter him. God Snow was the biggest idiot of all gaming lmao literally dumb musclehead personified.

Wow.

Main story is giving me strong Type-0 vibes. Insanely short main story content, lacking in polish, cohesion, and presentation. And I also thought Type-0 handled its mythology (and plot in general) far, far, far, far, far worse than FFXIII.

Sigh.

I love this game, I really do. I just hope that somehow the story really starts exciting me soon, despite these nearly-unforgivable leaps in logic and giant story cuts.

Just do more damage and try to warp through her attacks. Use those i-frames.

wtf is even happening in that spot post-Titan where they're running around and shit is blowing up. I don't even know where that was relative to the actual fight area.

I think there was a similarly jank transition from chapter 7 to 8 though not quite as bad, it still needs way more time for the connective tissue to actually set things up. It all feels so haphazard and, weirdly enough, rushed.

All truth in this post, sadly. I just played through this part.... yeeesh.

I get the sense that this was chopped down from something much larger. But not only that... I think the people working on this narratively kind of lost sight of what the scenes were intended to imply, and didn't have the awareness to realize that what they intended wasn't really up on screen.

You could go over this scenario, and without much effort, fix it with a couple of extra scenes and dialogue re-writes, but I guess the team didn't have the time or awareness to do that.

Yeah I had no idea what went on at the very end. Ok, Luna, ok, things are blowing up, ok, Ardyn, ok, now I'm in some area in Cleigne (forgot where it is, I shut the game off immediately after) without a car. I could have easily seen a good 10+ mins of cutscenes here... that were needed

Chapter 9's set piece boss thing is so bullshit

Currently on that Ch. 9 boss and holy crap I'm loving this. Thought some aspects of the
E3 trailer didn't completely make it
but if this is the closest we were supposed to get I'll take it.

Also, nothing like jamming to the theme to Elder Scrolls. :p

It does carry with it some Type-0 vibes beneath its blockbuster skin yeah. It creates a unique effect but it makes you wonder how much potential was left unseen. Type-0 too did some interesting things with its cast and themes but had its story arranged somewhat loosely and was arguably struck by a faltering second half. But for a spin-off it worked, imo.

So I got a major problem

Volcano mountain as I call it. There's a quest up there and a camp. When I stayed overnight at the camp shit when wack as fuck. Assets disappeared, walls were glitching, invisible walls and rocks, nothing spawned, I could see into a cave most likely that I wouldn't haven't been able to see into. I could not functionally explore the area like normal. When I exited to the entrance everything seemed normal, return to rest point and it was exactly the same. Did anyone else experience this problem?

It took me a couple of years of lurking and a few years of being a junior to realize that I am in an extreme manority here. I can't find anything wrong with the story. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 8 bit genre where story didn't mean as much as game play.

Anyhow, on topic, I can't consistently get good scores in finesse. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Best tech for each characters?

I really like Enhancement for Ignis and Starshell for Prompto. Gladiolus I switch up depending on the situation.

I had the sea turn into a black, featureless abyss for me at Goldin Quay, once.

In the post Ch. 4 load screen, I turned to my friend and literally said "I feel like the story is about to get a lot better."

2 minutes later, the load screen finishes...

1. No resolution to Ardyn driving them around in an Nflheim airship.
2. No reaction from the main characters to chapter 4. The only thing they talk about is their car.
3. Character who I've barely been introduced to shows up, Ignis tells me "She's a spirit.", and she spouts a lot of incomprehensible fantasy mumbojumbo.
4. Next quest objective is given by a pop-up text box, name-dropping Ramuh even though Gentiana didn't.

Considering you can change techs in the middle of a fight I don't know why they can't just have a better way to select them. Like time already freezes when you use an item, and that menu has tabs...it'd be be nice to have a tab to change out or use techs(and abilities so that Ignis would actually use analyze at the start of a fight, lol).

Instead it's super clunky. Open the menu, go to gear, pan to the character, go to tech, swap it...meh. There's a handful of small QoL things that would make combat drastically better.

I feel you, I guess this is my MGSV, where the combat (and dungeons) are so good that I'm much more capable of mot stressing out over the story. I mean yea, potential honeymoon phase and all, but this is the most fun I've had gaming all year.

Type-0 didn't work at all for me. The main story was insanely short, story missions were one location, copied-and-pasted rooms, some cutscenes, random jumps, some more random jumps, next chapter starts, another jump, view Codex to read some incredibly important text or even watch some important scenes for the first time, rinse and repeat. Didn't help that the main cast was easily the worst in any JRPG I have ever experienced (yes, I even liked Star Ocean 4's cast more), the localization was awful, the battle system was whatever, the game was a grindfest, etc. etc.

Luckily, FFXV has the incredible world, soundtrack, visuals, characters, and battle system. Plus I think the voice acting is great for the most part. It's just that, main story-wise, so far, it's giving me similar vibes.

Don't have a base PS4 to compare with so I'm going off of Lite vs High mode. Lite has A LOT more dithering than High, if only for the simple fact that Lite is 1080p and High is Supersampled 1800p. I also notice that aside from the dithering and jaggies, Lite makes the strands of hair that should be sitting on the character's heads seem like they are see through, or transparent? That doesn't happen on High mode.
