Beginning Ch.13... tomorrow. I'm tired lol

Gladio said at one point during a cutscene "I don't know to expect", and I'm over here thinking "Me too buddy, me too" lmao

EDIT: Oh shit, no they didn't...

People who disliked the game are a loud minority, that's all. The majority liked it or loved it (Check out the reviews it's getting). Happens all the time at GAF, with games like MGS4, MGSV, Uncharted 3, Bioshock Infinite, etc.

Remember, reading something is "trash" in GAF means absolutely nothing.

I suppose so! The spoiler thread is incredibly hot hot hot for not spoilers, but general disappointment.

I get a lot of it; there is a fair deal of things that straight up missed their potential in the game. I feel as though the game accomplished what it set out to do -- and that is show the story of Noctis.

Not done yet, but I'm feeling the same as you. Really loving it. It'll probably end up as one of my fave FFs along with IX, VII and X.

Even if the story takes a nose dive (though I'm really looking forward to the ending), it won't really erase how much I love the four boys and how much I apparently care for them lol.

Straight up.

I came into the game knowing full well who my favorites were in the group, but by the end I cared about every single one of them. I feel that second half story picks up and gets more impetus to move along, and is strengthened by it, but others say the pacing is off. I'm interested in what you think!

Gladio turns from a bland character to straight up twat in chapter 10 wish game had a punch gladio button everytime he gobs off

Maaan. I loved that scene. Propelled Gladio up there in the ranks of the four, imo.

EDIT:

Chapter 13 was pretty rough mechanically, but I felt as though it was trying to achieve the same thing that the microwave corridor in MGSIV did and tie narrative with gameplay frustration. But I might be looking too hard at it. I definitely was feeling Noctis' sentiments by the end of it.

Magic was the worst part of this battle system. I dreaded having to craft magic and ended up getting by without it.

I can't get over how disappointed I am with this game.

There desperately need to be at least two slots for "Skills" per character.
Pressing the D-Pad and holding the D-Pad should be two different inputs.
Maybe even have a "Double Tap" slot so we can have three of each character's skills available at a time.

It's ridiculous that I have to go into the Main Menu to the Equip screens and swap out attacks, sometimes multiple times in the middle of battle, and it's exacerbated but how supremely useful specific abilities are.
Like how Ignis should be using Regroup literally 95% of the time, or how Prompto's best Skill is his very first one for both damage output and low Tech cost.
The "Three Bar" Skills, which I guess are the equivalent of Limit Breaks, are hilariously impractical.

Also, there's the D-Pad Down slot that gets used for maybe 30 minutes of the entire game and then sits there empty forever, taunting you.

I agree. I really wish they kept the battle system from the 13-2 games. I feel like this was a huge step backwards.

The end of chapter 5......
not Jared..... wait, who's Jared?
and then the start of chapter 6
no, thank Jared. The characters almost on their knees in tears. Who's Jared?!?!?!
That is some terrible, terrible writing.

As far as a gameplay sequence reflecting the frustration of the characters, I actually thought Chapter 10 did a better job of this (despite Gladio being a shit), being chastised for running ahead was a pretty effective way of having you empathize with everyone in the scene.

I'm only on chapter 5, but I have to imagine the only time I'll use magic is when they give me a fight that's borderline unwinnable without it. It's limited use, a pain to make, and it causes friendly fire damage. AND it doesn't really do a ton of damage even when I use it.

Spent 20 hours on this over the weekend. I'm enjoying it, despite its flaws. The level design is definitely far above average for the genre (though it's funny how most the setpieces become pointless if you sprint through dungeons), the combat is satisfying even when you're facing easier enemies, and the visuals are among the best I've ever seen, especially the lighting.

The world is a mixed bag - it doesn't really feel like its openness is utilised in the main missions, since a lot of the time important scenes happen (at least so far) at predetermined locations on a map, rather than in the game world that you're familiar with. It's nice that it's there for worldbuilding's sake, though, I appreciate how you can do stuff like pick up items in the market, every photo opportunity is properly scripted, driving around never ends up feeling samey and tiresome. Same thing with riding Chocobos.

It's a shame that traversal across the world often feels stiff and awkward, you'll often see land formations that are begging to be climbed that you in fact, cannot climb, for instance. Or invisible walls that just break the illusion that you're there. It feels even more odd given how Square Enix nailed the physics in other places, like animation.

The other thing that the game doesn't do very well at all are the side quests. I've done about 25 so far and only a couple have offered anything tangible or interesting. The game goes out of its way to introduce these characters to you, and all they have to offer is literally just tasks like fetching frogs for research or going to find more gemstones. The tasks themselves aren't a bad thing, it's the lack of any sort of meaningful or even interesting exposition.

I think Xenoblade Chronicles X nailed its side quests because it made them into mini-stories and scenarios that related back to the game's characters and its world. One of the benefits of having just one large town (New LA), though. FFXV's world never really feels like one interconnected game world as towns and locations rarely link up with one another in tangible ways.

I think I'm going to gamefly Star Ocean 5 as a palette cleanser. I know it wasn't a hit but I loved 4 and this game just bummed me out.

Magic is probably my favorite kind of thing to use in the game.

The only bad thing is friendlgly fire but it feels good, looks good and helped me win tons of fights where I was severly underleveled.

Magic is the one kind of move that makes me feel precise and rewarded for using it.

It's incredible how they managed to make something as simple as Chocobo riding annoying. The unresponsive dismount combined with the inability to pick up items while riding just kills it for me. I just walk everywhere now.

It's the side quests that make is clear that FFXV is the spiritual successor to Lightning Returns. It has to be the same exact team of writers who were left to do their job in a separate room from the rest of the dev team. They have you do some menial task, and then when you come back and complete it they try to give it some kind of emotional weight to make you FEEL for this generic NPC, like: "oh thank you for finding my lost pencil! The truth is, this pencil belonged to my brother before he passed away. He built this whole town, you know! And now his legacy can move on, thank you so much here's 500xp oh yeah and fuck you!"

LOL, I'm so overleveled. I was lvl 39 at the end of Ch. 3, now I'm in Ch. 6 and I'm 43. Looking forward to overleveling even more later.

You'll be surprised how quick the rest of the game goes. I was 43 ish in 6 and was 48 after 13. The second half is incredibly linear.

Don't overlevel.

I just want to fight some battles in the Cleigne region and chill to the amazing soundtrack, but now I basically two-shot just about everything, and even if I hang back and let the bros handle things they're almost as quick.
I wish there were stronger wildlife and Magitek Troopers that'd show up.
It seems like the farther you get into the game and the higher your level the more battles become either "mindlessly easy" or "they kill you by glancing in your direction" with pretty much no in-between.

Also, "Hunt" versions of monsters seem to be way tougher than "Wild" versions of the same monster, at the same level.
I...Really don't get how level factors into the stat and damage calculations in this game, besides raising max HP.
And then, once you hit the
Leviathan
battle, the game spends most of the rest of the runtime marking important enemies
as "Level ???"

I'm surprised that every other post in this thread isn't a complaint about the camera it is that big a problem for me, it is nearly game-breaking how often I'm staring at a random piece of the environment while my characters get pummeled. I had a fight yesterday at night against a Hunt mark and a bunch of Imperials where I spun the camera literally 360 degrees and couldn't get an angle where I could see any of my characters.

I heard from others about how terribly linear the second half was so I spent like 30 hours before even going pat chapter 6.

It is, but I intend on getting the plat, so I figured I'd just level up post game and made a pretty straight path to the end this go round. I only took quests that seemed cool to me and didn't see a bunch of optional stuff.

I'm like Lv61 atm on Ch.13 lol

lol honestly fuck Ch. 13, but that's a good place to be there.

The biggest quality of life change they could make at this point is transparent foliage.

The most annoying thing in the game is the little trees. God I hate them.

Completely agree. Also, another thing that's high up there imo is the lack of a bestiary. It's really annoying not being able to precisely know where the wide variety of monsters are, what they can drop, their weaknesses/resistances, etc. Like c'mon, you have these wondrous designs in these huge ass world, and then you don't allow us to have a way to look each one up?

Like I'm sure that at some point, if not already, someone will detail these things on the internet, but the game itself should have it.

Also, why can't we accept more than one hunt, or change the time to daytime/nighttime whenever we want... It's just irritating, because the game does so much well, but these little things can't help but to nag at you lol

Wouldn't be surprised if holding to summon was hiding asset loading in the time it takes.

see: FFT

I thought that was obvious, a little too much even. It's ok, summons are great, but they could have at least made a summoning/charging animation so you know you're actually doing something.

Now that I think of it, I don't like the fact that when a chapter ends they count the exp... ok that i'm on chap 3, but I was waiting to collect all the exp to double it, and I didn't expect the chap to end so quickly and lost the bonus... :(

Yeah, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. This sort of side quest design doesn't really suit a game that makes a big deal of its open world (heck, a chapter is named after it!). It definitely feels like two teams have made two different sets of scenarios and none of them link together, even if both populate the world with content.

I don't think so. There's flavor text about it absorbing the elements of fallen enemies but I've never really seen it do that.

Honestly I haven't been using the general swords that often. For 70% of cases the greatsword works wonders and the other 30% is usually best for daggers.

Backflip + air dance combo makes swords worth it.

Part of me thinks they should just take this exact game engine and code and use it to make FFXVI with a better narrative/quest design/etc etc.

Yes, I agree with the general wisdom that wants them off Luminous and onto an easier established engine (UE4).... but XV is built now. If you took that same base and set out to build a game with a really strong, coherent narrative and scenario progression... you could make something truly amazing.

I'd even be down for a modified version of this battle system. Maybe it's okay if they do what is essentially FFXV-2 (but in a new world, new characters).

The combat in this game is SO GOOD that every time I see a Magitek Engine fly in overhead, I feel like it's a pinata about to burst open into candy...

Sweet, delicious, killable candy!

Well, fuck... So, iron giant in a dungeon just glitched out for me. His magnet move is not ending. I can run out of his range but I can't get far away enough to stop battle. And I really don't want to redo the dungeong because of all the bombs...

Stand still and hold it for ages. It's stupid, except for that one person in the thread who thinks it makes perfect sense.

I said the button prompt makes perfect sense (which it does as the game teaches you what it means via other actions like drawing magic from the elemental nodes).

Not he way the summons are called in general. :3

I also have the same problem. Is there even a restuarateur in Lesta?

As you go up the main street there is a little restaurant on the right side. He gives hunts from level12 up to 99 He should be beside a couple of tables.

You should be able to get out of the dungeon, save and then reload the save. I did that with the sewers and worked. You should not have to kill the adds again this way.

Edit: NVM I missread your comment. I guess reloading a save or let yourself die to trigger an intermidiate load status is the only way.

The game teaches you that holding down buttons will also have some kind of response, not multiple seconds of nothing happening. That said, Noct could get off the Chocobo faster.

It's pretty simple, you either agree that the methods behind summons suck or you're objectively wrong. We don't deal in middle grounds here.

Went to compare trophies with my japanese friend

The trophy lists are separate. Why??

Each region has separate trophies. Not that common but it does happen.

I don't think it's the reason why, but SE will get a couple of people buying different region copies so they could get multiple platinums. There are a few people that obsessed.
