Kingsglaive isn't a good film, but I gave it a rewatch for XV's launch and I did enjoy it more, in a fan service sort of way.
Imo the Regis scenes make it worth watching, those have felt sorely missing in the game so far and are actually quite good. And the opening and ending are touching too, the story it's trying to tell really isn't bad at all.
But basically, that's the stuff they cut when they changed the opening. The movie specific scenes and characters really don't go anywhere. :/
But yeah, that stuff makes it important, storywise the opening hours are very bare bones. And yes that's a pretty big issue, the invasion really should have been kept as the game's opening
Gotta say though, I'm 10 hours in XV (with a lot of that time spend on side activities mind you) and I really don't mind how they implemented the Kingsglaive scenes, it's sort of interesting really. They really don't show much and it makes the whole thing feel sort of mysterious. A real tease if you haven't watched it.
But the way they implement the scenes does mean they don't replace the movie in the slightest and merely offer a glimpse at it. So don't think the patch made the movie unnecessary or anything along those lines. It merely added some mysterious CG scenes. Which I do like in my Final Fantasies so I appreciate the addition.
