I wonder how does rushing through and only doing the main story affect difficulty? I'm somewhat overleveled and certain story dungeons, namely chapter 7's (so far), were still pretty difficult for me.

What, how. Did you always fast travel everywhere?

Yep, fast travelled when I could. Also never ever died or had to replay anything in the game.

And I guess it wasn't that many side quests. Enough to get the 40 cleared trophy, not enough to get the 80 cleared.

Ok let's do this.

1. FF7
2. FF9/FF8
3. FF9/FF8 blame forced team splitting in 9.
4. FF12 purely for gameplay
5. FF15
6. FF13 pure musical bliss.
7. FF10 no fun on replaying but best battle system. Outlier for me.
8. FF4
9. FF6 I played this too far after release.
10. Everything else. I've not finished any of the other mainline games.

This was oddly therapeutic as it made me realize I'd put XV in my top 5 and more importantly that I can't say any are perfect. Each one has things I hugely dislike with 7 being the least offensive of the bunch.

Though 8 and 9 are high on my list it's easy for me to forget that the junction system ruined one for me and forced party break offs for long stretches do major damage to the other. Sometimes I only remember the good stuff and forget how bad some design ideas can be.

I'm just about to start chapter
13
. I heard the chapter is pretty long. Are there any chances to save the game during the chapter?

Er, holy shit. I remember being impressed by the size of the Adamantoise in FFXIII. This just took it to another level.

I think I'll just get on with chapter 9 instead.

What level did people beat it at? I know it recommends 99, but I'm curious. I'm only level 69/68 so far.

I did it at lvl 91 but you can easily do it at your level. It's not hard at all, just tedious because the health is so large.

Yeah I only fast travel if I've been playing for a while and just want to get certain quests over with lol. I love wasting time driving around listening to music too much.

All done, boss beaten and ending watched. 37 hours, level 44. I liked it overall but it has some major flaws, I'd probably give it a 7 or 8/10. Step in the right direction after XIII but I think I preferred XIII-2 (yeah come at me).

Pros
Overworld, always plenty to do. Camping, cooking, minigames etc. Big improvement on XIII.
Some great set pieces.
OST.
Looks amazing.
I like what they attempted with the comradery of the 4 main characters.
Summons have never been better.
Chocobos, I loved running across the map with the three others all alongside me.
Jared

Cons
Camera during battles. Awful awful awful.
Bad storytelling, too many things on the cutting room floor I imagine but the plot jumps around suddenly too much, made it hard to care about certain characters and developments.
Battle system is too simple, very repetitive.
Driving. Ughhh. I shouldn't ever have to sit and watch my characters drive for literally 10 minutes while I do nothing.
Magic, waste of time.
So many hunt side quests, I'm not generally a fan of them.
Chapter 13.

Man, I suck so much at avoiding damage. Unless it's not mean to be avoidable?

Chapter 7:
Quezacoatl - holy fuck. Dude coats the room in lightning with no warning. I ate through six or seven elixirs that fight.
Yeah it's hard it sucks worse for me I hate using square and circle for block and attack so I moved then to r1 and l1 but the on screen it still has Circle and square this game needs 100% changeable controls

So I'm in the All set to sail chapter and I just did my first optional dungeon where every enemy is 8 to 10 level higher then me and I destroyed the dungeon with my magic. The boss of the dungeon went down to 5 Thundaga spells.

I love playing a magic user! I wish magic in this game was more fleshed out like in previous Final Fantasy games.

If I'm in chapter 10, have I passed any sort of point of no return? Should I just power on from here? Appreciate as non-spoilery an answer as folks can provide, and apologies if this is answered frequently (been staying out of most threads on the subject).

Ideally I'd like to finish the story and then return to clean up any side stuff I've missed, but I may just run through it from here and replay the game when they've patched a lot of the questionable stuff. The (ch8 or ch 9) fight with
Leviathan
was such a fucking mess. Kept fighting for about ten minutes and had to look up to
use Royal Arms
which instantly moved me into the next phase, which felt real silly.

Notice how cheap healing items are in this game, soooo much cheaper than past FFs. Usually you can't buy elixirs at all, and when you can they're anywhere from 5000 gil to 50,000. They're 400 gil in this one. I think you just reached the point in the game where they basically expect you to start popping them like candy.

For the final chapter since I knew it was near the end I just sold a bunch of treasures and stocked up on 70+ Elixers and some Phoenix Downs. Basically couldn't lose at that point.

I'm so torn on whether to keep playing with all these updates planned in the future :(

I'm gonna keep going. I kind of want to experience whatever the hell chapter
13
is before they patch it.

One of my friends said a streamer he watches called it the most excruciating thing he's ever gone through in a game. Can't wait!

Chapter 13.

Lol at 13..

Camera angles on battles especially the bigger monsters is really bad. I don't think they thought things through on those fights..

My first encounter with that snake boss..

I'm 4 trophies away (the skills besides Ignis and the turtle). How long did fishing take to get to max?
Fishing isn't that long. There is an excellent area by Cape Caem that will get you there pretty fast. I really enjoyed fishing in this game so it went by really fast for me. Whereas Gladio's took my strapping rubber bands around my controller and leaving it alone for a couple of hours lol.

Level 43 and I just hit Chapter 8. So overleveled, but the game still has challenge in dungeons.

Also, Aranea is fucking awesome.
Wish she could be a permanent party member.

I can't fish worth shit. Any advice? Can't seem to get fish to bite.

I'll probably keep going too. I'm more interested in the story scenes they'll add (And playable characters) but that seems to be a long way off.

Well, I kinda had an advantage because I got an item with the preorder that is kind of like ultimate bait. So on that end.. I'm not sure I can be much help. Just try different baits and switching around things. Make sure to update your rod and line whenever possible too.

Well, Chapter 13 done

It took me 3 hours to fully clear it, picking all items and stuff. It's mediocre gameplay-wise and innecesarily long, but the final boss battle against Ravus is by far my favourite (and most challenging) one so far, really liked it.

I also liked Ardyn's reveal and the talk with Bahamut.

One question about the end of the chapter (BIG SPOILER):

So Ardyn's surname is also Lucis Caelum, but is it revealed in the last two chapters how is he related to Noctis? (Grandfather, great-grandfather...). Just say yes or no

End of chapter 5, start of chapter 6 spoilers:

The game is fucking with me, right?
A sad montage because eh.. someone died? I had to look up who the hell Jared was. Seriously, everyone is more crushed than the moment where they find out their homeland is annihilated and the king is murdered.

...and then they go on a random revenge mission to avenge Jared? Are you kidding me bro?

Not to mention these base infiltration missions are terrible. TERRIBLE.

The relationship between
Ardyn and Noctis is already revealed at that part of the game. Noctis' family are not the real Lucis Caelum. They are the Izunia. Ardyn has been alive for hundreds and hundreds of years. He was the original Lucis Caelum that was supposed to ascend to the throne. The Crystal chose the Izunias instead, and they 'took' the Lucis Caelum surname for themselves.

:(

Maybe I'll just ignore fishing then.

I'm level 40something in Chapter 6. Turned the Chapter 5 Boss
Highwind
battle into a complete joke, but it was hilariously fun all the same.

Other question, regarding royal tombs and their locations:
Does every royal tomb have one of the vault things around it? Just cleared the Thickets, and didn't find any vault in there. Wondering if I missed it.

I did not pick up on this at all.

Might be because the music deafened Arden talking in one scene, really bad sound mix.
