I feel bad for them actually - it was probably marketing and management that decided to do that video and now they have to try to deal with it.

Yeah. That video made me cringe but it clearly wasn't Turn 10's decision. Some executive said "BUT WE GOTTA SELL 3 MILLION COPIES MAKE THE DAMN GAME LOOK FUN!"

You'll have to link me to where he says this, because for example in the IGN video he says that the Project Blackjack guy worked on the "B roll video" and edited it in premiere. What is the "B roll video" - I'm pretty sure he dodged the question. Besides, refer to my post above from the forzamotorsport.net forums moderator who says the Community At Play video is CG and "inspired by" Project Blackjack.

i edited my response. thanks for that forum link.

HAHA, basically. I just now wandered over to FM.net and found the same pics and some other comparison pics. Should've checked fm.net first, but oh well.

It's a pretty standard thing in a lot recent racers. The same thing happened with pgr4 when it came out, the intro movie was all realtime and no one believed it because of the reflections and the motion blur. I forget exactly which recent games, but I know I've seen it in other games than pgr4.

Besides, Che himself confirmed that the cars are indeed reflected in their own cubemaps earlier in this thread.

well, it's kind of different. When in hood cam you can sometimes see the car in front of you reflected on your own because of the way reflections work in both pgr4 and fm3 but that's basically it. Still different than having cars reflecting each other accurately, or the car door reflecting its own side mirror (something you can see in that vid).
Also PGR4 intro is not exactly real time. it's rendered using the game's photomode function, which means the game does look almost like that, minus AA, AF and with worse quality motion blur and dof.

Not to mention insane camera angles that were never in the game's replays. Angles that would have surely caused the frame rate to drop.

What's with the old-school Xbox Live logos on the track?

I'm not complaining; I like the old Xbox logo way better. :D

I'm guessing the Forza 2 graphics engine was the same as Forza 1. Good thing they made a new one!

On a side note, it would be awesome to see Turn-10 make a new PGR with this engine. :O

lol, someone should do a F1 vs F2 vs F3 side by side comparison.
Yes please!
I've always wanted a Dev to show comparisons in video, of their previous games and their current ones.
Maybe someone can cut a video showcasing the transformation along side the pics suggestion?

I bet they're placeholder for actual racing related logos that will be added to the track later.

Has there been anything else said about the new SP Career Mode? I'm really excited for that since the GT-esque Career Mode in the first one was very disappointing.

From what I understand:

They've added a dynamic calendar system to career mode that adds events to a calendar based on what cars you buy, what types of races you like to do, etc. This will be different for every person. I think this is in addition to the ability to go through any events if you have the right car / class like the previous version.

Isnt that a seperate mode called season mode and the career mode works like Forza 2?

Has anyone asked how come the driver is not shown changing the gears in cockpit view? Its not in any video i've seen posted. All the cars couldn't have been automatic could they? it seems like a big oversight on T10 part considering all the competitors games have that.

Wow the difference between this and FM2 is like night and day. Had no idea they would be able to output an upgrade this big in such a short time frame. Kudos to Turn 10

i havent looked for it, but maybe paddle shifters? or everyone is driving automatic? :lol

More than likely it's just not in yet. As has been mentioned, they apparently only got Cockpit mode up and running rather recently, so it is very possible that gear changing just hasn't been implemented yet.

What i'd like to know is, why, if they are in automatic mode, doesn't it sound like an automatic?
I mean, most, if not all games treat automatic shifting the same as manual.
It should be near instant.

Why is this so?

Or it's entirely possible it won't be in at all. It requires either a custom animation for each car, or a few animation poses (shift on paddle, shift on gear stick) and inverse kinematics to automatically resolve the animation as the gear is shifted.

Who knows whether it will go in or not.

In a way I hope they don't have the driver doing animated shifts. Really puts me off because the animation obviously lags behind when you actually changed gear.

It would be awesome if they used the shifting AI used for automatic to try and guess when you would shift to get the hand in position early. That is probably too much to ask though. Probably wouldn't work all that well for downshifting either.

IK shouldn't really put much strain on the engine though, right? I mean it has been around since the PS1. I can't imagine that would be something that needed to be excluded for any performance reason.

Is that parallax mapping? It sure looks like it. Either that or actual geometry at the road edge. Man they went all out.

Dan kept saying bump mapping and that looks like it. Parralax mapping will have lines of the same pixel value at the raised edge (like a stretched portion of the texture).

At least we know now that the photomode will take better quality shots, FM2 had pretty bad compression on the pics.

I watched more realtime footage and I have to say, the texture filtering looks way better than in FM2. It really helps because there seems to be way more detail on the track. More tire marks, cracks, etc.

What I did also notice in the realtime footage was that the reflection maps look like they're being updated at 15fps, I could be wrong though.

op_ivy said:
i may be mistaken, but che says the "community at play" video was put together capturing real race footage and editing in software like premiere. pretty amazing if all that really was in game

No that's pre-rendered CG using in-game assets.

Wonder how much Audi is fundaing them to get all this support. Audi tournament, the R8 V10 being the "cover model", etc. Not that I mind, the R8 is an absolutely beautiful car and I can't think of a better one to put on the front.

Watcihng Blim's vid, the reflections are definitely not 15fps. It might be 30, but going frame by frame I seemed to be seeing the same ghosting as the environment caused by pulling the 60fps down to 30, so it may very well be 60.

It may also drop frames in the cube map update before it drops frames in the rest of the game if it thinks it's going to slow down.

Was the R10 TDI a DLC car in Forza 2? Must've been in a pack I didn't get.

Cockpit view in the open-top LMP cars will be pretty slick.

Why aren't they showing it off with the new R15 though? That one is even awesomer, though this one is still great!

Yeah, it's a beast of a car and hopefully will be in the final roster as well.

Aesthetically, i'm not too keen on that wide, flat nose. Mechanically, though, they don't get much better.

The backgrounds are quite astonishing, but the vehciles could definitely still use some work. They still have a slightly toy like look about them. I think they should increase reflective properties, and lower the thickness or intensity of the paint/lacquer.

The V10 model of the R8 wasn't in Forza 2. The plain old R8 was in the december pack.

New environments like the gorgeous mountainous Montserrat region in Spain, the rugged Amalfi Coast in Italy and the American Southwest are presented in such majestic detail that you might find yourself pulling over just to take it all in.

please have the grand canyon in the american southwest environment :)

Whoops, should have specified: I meant the R10 LMP racecar seen in the shots op_ivy posted. I know for a fact I purchased the December car pack with the R8 road car.

EDIT: It was indeed in the September Car Pack.

awesome shots!

so, we have talked wheels, what about seat arrangements? years ago, i had built my own from home depot steel pipes, but the rigidity was lacking, it was heavy as hell, no racing seat, and not easy to store. i'd like to get a dedicated racing seat and frame for F3, what are the best choices?

the playseat evolution looks nice and sturdy.

Fanatec makes one hell of a cockpit; like their wheel, it isn't cheap.

It's not a performance problem, it's a schedule problem. From their interviews, the game's content is finished, the code is pretty much finished and just in bug fix and polish mode so I'm guessing you're not going to see too many additional features between now and release.

It's more "automatic" as an aid then a real automatic gearbox, the game just does the shifting for you.

going by that community at play video it appears the game does have something like that, if that video indeed uses ingame assets (which i believe it does).

as for cars; i believe we've only seen metallic painting so far, curious to see what solid and iridescent (possibly more ?) look. For the sake of nitpicking i'll say they could tone the reflections down a bit.
I would also really like to see some racing car with decals and all in the next bunch of pics they release : ) Or well, some simple custom paintjob.

Quality of these pics might not be representative of what we'll get out of the photomode, i remember pr pics of FM2 being much higher quality (meaning much better AA and less compression) than photomode pics you'd snap ingame.

Judging by the hd direct feed and offscreen vids, i'd say the game looks pretty much jaggy free.

Apparently, no one likes replays.

Ah, my fault. I misread what you wrote.

Bugatti Veyron.
Blech. It's a cool car for it's raw engineering prowess, but I find it quite ugly to be honest.

Ah, that's a good point. Wonder what all the artists at turn10 are up to now:D (probably making DLC cars, I guess)
