Anthony should never review another rap album that isn't made by Death Grips. His comment about Ross'instrumental choices couldn't have been further off base and how he glances over the great features as if they're a minor footnote is laughable.
See, this is what i was talking about with your potential niche bruh. You can do what 99.99% of guys like Fantano doing all shit can't with rap music. His choice of good features to mention was Big Sean and Ye, but clearly Jay, Jeezy, and even Wayne elevated all the tracks they were on. Sometimes when he talks about just rapping purely you can see he's off. Then there's all the talk about what's real and what's fake, like every single emcee in the game rapping about drugs isn't embellishing or flat out lying, etc. I have always found it strange that some of the least 'street' type rap critics and fans put premiums on authenticity. A lot of the hipster/'we do everything' music outlets have given out some super harsh/critical from the jump reviews and coverage of Mastermind.

Exactly. I'm not a big fan of Ross but it's not cause he's not "Real" enough for me. That whole discussion of "authentic" is too post-modern for me. Reminds me why I hated College.

people caring about reviews again. stop. your ears should be the only reviewer you need. hell, pretty much everything is available to stream before dropping down the duckets.

Ha, agreed. Reviews don't really affect whether or not I buy things for the most part. I sometimes look at them to see if they caught something I missed about the project (whether it's a game, film, tv show, or album). When it's Hip-Hop, I like hearing other Rappers talk about why they like other Rappers cause that appreciation of the craft is usually much more interesting to hear than Hipster Reviews on "Authenticity" or whether the Artist has "matured or developed".

you shouldn't ever base your opinions on other reviews of course, but I don't think people should ignore reviews just because. A good review will be compelling to read/watch/hear whether you agree or not, and taking in reviews that counter yours often helps me to better understand why I disagree and why I like(d) a record in the first place. that's why I pay attention to fantano for experimental/rock/some electronic. he's been cold to some of my favorite albums of the year so far (angel olsen, yonce) but at least he had stuff to say and was turning me on to alright shoegaze bands at the same time

Agree that frequently the best rap critics are other rappers though, like dodger said. Rap still needs a Robert Christgau and/or a Lester Bangs, big ghost fase is close tho

Actually he also noted Scarface. I'd imagine he didn't like the Jay track hence not mentioning it, and War Ready is a bad song; Jeezy's verse is getting praise simply because he's rapping up tempo compared to Ross - the actual verse is very repetitive and doesn't even rhyme. Wanye...smh.

I was fine with his Mastermind review. I fuck with a certain side of Ross, mainly his lush mafiso tracks like Rich Off Cocaine, Amsterdam, etc. But lyrically he is straight up sub par to average. Even the tracks I like on Mastermind are very repetitive and lack much visual interest. However it has 3-4 tracks that I think are great to amazing, namely Supreme and Sanctified.

A lot of people will never respect Ross due to the CO stuff, that's just a fact. Hip hop is full of guys who embellish their past, but typically if they sound and look the part they're forgiven (Ice Cube). But most rappers at least grew up around crime and dabbled in it; and in Cube's case he's from South Central, and that alone gives him a pass. Ross was a CO, which means he passed a background check, which means he has a clean record. I can divorce the music from the bullshit, but I understand why a lot of people find him to be a joke.He literally said he Skyped with a guy in prison (who had wifi in his cell) and counted money to get him hype. I understand the hate.

Overall I agree with many of his reviews. He has given rave reviews to Ka and other artists I like, which can't be said of some other sites/blogs more focused on hip hop.

Same. I often won't read professional music reviews until after I've heard the album just because I like knowing which things stand out to other people listening to the same piece of music. I even kind of like the pretension in most pitchfork style reviews. They do have a very fart noise quality to them, and they can be off the mark at times when it comes to rap, but outside of threads like this it's pretty rare to hear people get into specifics about why they like a certain type of music more than others. It's something I wish I was better at articulating myself.

Lol, I remember one time at my college, the music editor was complaining about how a Tech N9ne album had no real depth and it was just about good beats and impressive rhymes...

To get the true quality of an album you should inverse the Fantano scores. Dude gave XXX, Channel Orange and MMLP2 7s and 8s bwahahha

lol @ Danny Brown being so obsessed with getting good reviews from Fantano tho. I fucks with his reviews but damn Danny is way too self conscious for someone who casually gets head during concerts and flouts his missing teeth.

Beautiful.

Smart move, also, getting a 750w power supply; Leaving yourself that headroom just in case you want to SLI (and even further than that, overclock) down the line. I went conservative with my 550w Seasonic. Fantastic power supply, but the wattage doesn't leave me much to work with after an OC and AMD's GCN power draw.

was talking about instrumental hip-hop with this girl I met recently, and she told me about Blue Sky Black Death. I'm thinking it's a metal band or some shit, but it turns out they're pretty dope. Then end up finding out they've done a bunch of beats for artists I've seen folks post about here (Deniro Farrar and Nacho Picasso)

Basically, all roads lead to GAF-Hop. Time is a flat circle.
