Game of Thrones - Season 2 - George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire - Sundays on HBO

Marathoned Season 1. Wow.

It started off boring but got better and better.

The sex and nudity is a bit much but I can look past it.

Just started S2. The Sean Bean death scene was stomach wrenching.

Agreed about the sex and nudity. A little gratuitous T&A is par for the course for HBO, but I've found they usually tone it down and use it more sporadically as a series becomes established, but for GoT, it hasn't let up at all. If anything, it has increased. The overly indulgent sex scenes this time around are cheapening the otherwise exceptional quality of this show, and I hope they pull back the reins a little once they realize viewership isn't tuning in for that reason.

Wow, people really think Margaery looks 30?!?! Talk about sharp knees. She could EASILY be early-mid 20's.

eh I can see it even though it's a bit much.

And she most definitely does not look like she could be anywhere close to early-mid 20's. She looks like she's in the mid-late 20's at the least.

Yeah the T&A is getting a little ridiculous. If I wanted a show that was desperately relying on soft-core to cover its terrible plot I would be watching Spartacus. The books rarely spend time detailing any of the sex scenes. They have a limited amount of screen time to establish some of the most complex relationships ever introduced in a series like this I would think showing some titties wouldn't be so important.

Also along with that while I got vague hints about Renly and Loras from the book I love how HBO is just going all the frick out with that.

What the hell books were you reading?

I seriously cannot comprehend why people get their panties in such a twist over the sex scenes, especially if you're someone who has read the books. Anyone who thought that the marriage of HBO and ASOIAF was not going to include lots of sex and nudity was deluding themselves.

I'm not so confident about that. Sex, almost universally, sells.

I'm reading through the books now and just finished the third one and honestly, sex comes up A LOT in the books. You pretty much have a sex/nude scene every 4-5 chapters with frequent mentions of random women being raped in-between. The series is no more sexualized than the books imo thus far.

All I know is she looks smoking hot, dayum.

Agreed. Brienne's hotter though.

But what about the children?!?!?

Yup. Boy does George like talking about nipples.

Fuu

Formerly Alaluef (not Aladuf)
They even toned down the Dothraki sex stuff for TV, in the first book they fuck in public quite frequently.

My thing is pointless sex that's only thing for the "It's HBO" factor. This is 2012, if I want porn, I open a new tab. I don't subscribe to premium TV to see titties in motion.

Sex can absolutely serve a purpose, though. First episode of Girls was a great example. One, it was hilarious, two, it really illustrated the two characters and their relationship. In GOT it's there "just because" far too often. Yes, sex is a part of life, but does that mean we should also see more scenes of people taking a shit? Pretty sure that's also a part of daily life for people in Westeros.

I think she looks mid to late 20s. I'm curious if they will change the storyline down the road (Series.. can't remember which book but it's beyond COK. Either Feast or Dance.)
to not include her getting married to Tommen. When she was 16, it was at least within the realm of possibility... but with her being clearly much older, it might come off as too creepy. I guess Tommen's actor will be a few years older by then but she'd still look like his mother.

Holy shit the S02E01 brothel scene with the boobs just randomly popping up on screen. It's ridiculously forced at times.

Please list all the sex scenes that are there "just because" and don't serve some sort of narrative purpose, whether it be delivering backstory or adding depth to a character. It shouldn't take you too long, considering that there are none.

That wasn't an issue at all. Have you ever seen The Sopranos? If you're in a brothel or a strip club, titties are gonna be on display. You could certainly say the bit where Littlefinger wipes the cum off the chin of one of the whores was a bit much though.

It's detailed in the books, that's why it's there. If SoFaI depicted many scenes of people taking long drawn out shits, while having philosophical discussions with one another I'd expect it to be in there too.

Really? I can't remember any sex scenes from the book with Renly. When did Stannis have sex with Melisandre? I also don't recall Theon getting his bone on every 10 seconds from season 1 but I could have just been so consumed with figuring out what the hell was going on all the time that it didn't register.

Plus having one episode with 3-4 sex scenes seems a lot more gratuitous that reading the book and every couple hours having a 4 sentence paragraph describe Tyrion having sex with Shae.

Its not that I am prudish its just that there is a lot of fricken stuff to cover in these books and it would annoy me if they sacrifice character exposition just for some T&A.

It does nothing to the scene. Yes we know it's a brothel. It's like they added that in there for the teenagers. We don't need to be reminded every single time.

So many sex scenes where the sex does absolutely nothing for both the plot or characters. Viserys and Daenery's hand-maiden(I can't remember her name right now) obviously needed a sex scene while he had a monologue about dragons. Obviously.

I should clarify, scenes of exposition that have sex laid on top for no reason (edit: see above post) also counts as pointless sex. And is also vaguely insulting since the writers apparently think their audience is too thick to be able to listen to people talk for a minute if we don't have the visual of fucking to ease it down. (And you only have to look back one episode to see sex that doesn't even have the exposition pretense, the brothel scene following the does-kind-of-have-an-actual-point Theon scene).

Scenes where the sex itself matters? Those are absolutely 100% fine. See Dany in s1 for example as she starts 'taking control' with Drogo. The sex actually informs character.

Edit: Do I want to see Christina Hendricks topless? Yes. God yes. But do I want scenes of her fucking on Mad Men with her tits bouncing all around? No, not really. I watch Mad Men for story and character. I'll save the spank bank material for the internet.

Those sex scenes happened, we just didn't witness them because none of those characters are POV characters. Of course, the show is cutting out sex scenes that we did witness in the books, such as all the times Tyrion and Shae got together, so it all evens out.

None of the episodes has had 4 sex scenes. And I think maybe one ep out of 13 has had 3. Most have one or two or even none.

Thankfully they aren't sacrificing character exposition just for some T&A, you are getting both in one scene, hence the term 'sexposition'.

Neither Renly or Loras or Margaery or Stannis or Melisandre were point of view characters in the first two books. It's hard to detail a sex scene when you got no one to tell it.

In the show Renly's sex scenes and the Stannis/Melisandre thing serve a very clear purpose.

There were 4 sex scenes that I can remember from the first book. Cersei/Jaime, Drogo/Dany 2 or 3 times, and the women getting raped by the Khalasar.

None of these sex scenes were gratuitous or longer than a paragraph. You don't have to read pages and pages of it like you have to sit through minutes of it while watching the TV show.

Its a minor gripe of mine just minor I absolutely love the show. Your wrong about Renly though. Its hinted at. How many sentences are dedicated to being even vaguely about Renly not having a thing for women? 3 sentences maybe? Now how many minutes in the show have been used so HBO can check that box "appeals to homosexual audiences".

Just saying..

I remember when I was reading the books, I usually got a sense that the sex scenes were narrative or character-driven. Like, you have to see Jaime and Cersei having sex because that act forms the crux of the entire plot. But with the TV show, I definitely get a feeling that they're trying to throw some gratuitous stuff in there to keep horny viewers hooked.

Ok, so the show is only allowed to do exposition while characters are eating or walking or fighting or even playing drinking games, but not while the characters are having sex. Because sex is bad and we should only be forced to see it if the sex itself matters. Got it.

So I was thinking about the opening title sequence, and the locations, wondering what would be in this season. I think
Qarth
and
Harrenhal
are pretty much confirmed, but what about others? I think it's slightly weird that they show Castle Black every episode that's beyond the wall, but I'd imagine that
the Fist of the First Men
will at least get some recognition in the opening credits. What I also found odd was that Dragonstone was shown in episode 3, when Renly is meant to be nowhere near Dragonstone, but on virtually the other side of Westeros near Highgarden. Similar to how they insist on showing Vaes Dothrak for anything mildly Dothraki. Can anybody think of any others?

Wait, the title sequence shows different locations every episode?

Exposition dumps are never okay. It can also be painfully obvious when done in combat as well but when you throw tits on the screen just to throw them on, after a point it becomes obvious and tiresome. Not to mention we don't exactly get a ton of fight sequences on the show.

I don't understand and certainly don't agree with your point. The scene takes place in a brothel and thus there are naked women walking around. It would be silly for them to NOT be naked.

A lot of the sex is implied, including those that you mentioned, but since were not in the characters' heads for the TV series, implying those things becomes more difficult. If they were being fully faithful to the books, Shae would be naked in 9/10 of her scenes so they are cutting back in other areas.

I personally don't care if the sex is there or not but I just find it odd that people still complain about sex on HBO. This happens with nearly every major HBO series and considering the source material for this particular series, I find the complaints to be unjustified. The show has to appeal to a TV audience and all the exposition and internal monologue that happens in the books isn't going to show well on television.

Come on, it's extremely transparent that a lot of the sex on the show exists solely to fill the childish sex 'n titties HBO quota. It has such a reputation that even SNL has poked fun at it.

And as far as exposition itself goes, the show is terrible with it in general, not only when people are doing the nasty. It has an extreme case of tell-not-show. Obviously a lot is due to budget and the lack of the characters' internal monologue, but they really need to find more ways to creatively convey information within a tight budget without resorting to simple information dumps (lazy writing they often try to cover up with the aforementioned sex 'n titties).

There's a difference between people walking around naked and them highlighting the boobs with the quick transition and camera work.

All of the exposition thus far could have been left out and none of it would be missed. Especially that terrible boring scene where the prostitute is going on and on about dragons.

A "just because" sex scene to me is, the narrative purpose of the scene ends and we then watch two (or more!) characters do it for a minute or two. There are no scenes like that in this show.

A scene that serves a narrative purpose, be it exposition or character development, that also happens to have sex in it, is not a "just because" sex scene to me.
