The game definitely has its problems, movement and combat is noticeable worse than Arkham and the investigation portions are flat out uninteresting. I also hate the voice and personality of pretty much all the characters.

That being said, game is still fun in co-op. Been playing Red Hood on Series X, currently at lvl 10 and having a decent enough time.

I probably wouldn't recommend picking this up unless you're planning to play with a friend. Even then, seems better to wait for sale. It's not the trainwreck the reviews make it out to be though.

I ended up picking up the PC version. I'm digging it a little so far. At least with PC, it can mostly do 60fps (i could do higher on my monitor, but I decided to output to my tv, and have been running it at 4k). The open world traversal is a sadly a big problem with the game though, and I can see why it's being complained about a lot. The sense of speed while driving the batcycle is terrible, and choppy, and grappling isn't very fluid or ideal either.

Also I know this isn't an Arkham game, but there needs to be a lock to edge of move or something. I'm constantly trying to line myself up to come down on an enemy from above, but am worried I'll just jump off the ledge. The movement in general is not perfect, especially when you're trying to be stealthy. It just feels like you take turns way too wide.

Otherwise, I'm still enjoying it so far. Very early on though, so we'll see if that sticks. I'm interested in the setup more than other people seem to be. I don't read comics, so all the existing Batman universe stories are new to me, but the idea of a Gotham without Batman is an interesting one I suppose.

Of course, I'm playing as Batgirl so I get the best view also :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Presso O or B to go down a ledge without a jump (if this is your problem)

If you press any other button he does that long jump.

That's not really the problem, sometimes I just want to be near a ledge that doesn't have a perch spot, and look at the scene to tag enemies and see who I can maybe stealth attack. Its just tricking because of the stiff controls sometimes, and trying to get just right up the edge without flying off of it can be more a challenge than it should.

Yeah stealth is a bit clunky sometimes and you have to circle around the jank.

I think the last two patches definitely improved the performance a bit.
Doing some open world traversal here and a race (timestamped)

It seems to only drop now when it's switching LOD and even then it stays mostly around 50 still.

The game does a terrible job explaining new enemy types and how to counter them.

What is the deal with those guys who summon two or three drones that just keep dogpiling you?

if you scan an enemy you receive their profile, which lists their abilities and weaknesses; if it's a new enemy the profile prompt will show up on the right side of the screen right away.
The drone master are weak to shock generally, when they get that status all their drones explode too.

So I ended up getting the game after all. It’s… alright. The biggest issue I have with Gotham City is that they’re trying to imply a city that’s lived in by having active traffic and civilians, but it reminds me of Final Fantasy XV where everything feels not quite right. I never truly get the sense of a living world. It feels very static. I reach areas where there’ll be a bar, and you hear music, but there’s no one. No bartenders, no patrons, nothing.

The lighting looks a lot better if you change the settings away from default. I set the game’s brightness, contrast, and saturation to 60 each and it looks WAY better than it did at 50. Shame about the framerate. Areas of Gotham are all over the place. Some spots look really good, and others are downright awful. The lighting makes or breaks a lot of areas.

Everything is always so spread out, and your motorcycle moves at a pace that screams cancelled PS4 game which makes travel take longer than it needs to. The speedlines try to convey that you’re moving fast, but it doesn’t feel fast. Some of the character traversal options outside of the bike are… weird. Robin’s teleport thing makes zero sense and is flat out not fun, I really don’t understand what they were going for. Like, there’s nothing fun about disappearing and moving a cursor around for six seconds before you’re forced to reappear. Like, can I just glide please?

Combat is… different. I chose to play as Robin since I’m a Donatello kind of guy and so I always veer toward the gadget nerd character. The fact that he rocks a staff in combat and geeks out over tech just emphasizes the similarities. He seems to be the only one of the four that can do some of the stealth tactics that Batman uses in Arkham such as taking out enemies from above and having them dangle helplessly. You can spam the attack button, but you do more damage if you understand the game’s timing system and avoid just spamming attack so you build momentum faster. It doesn’t have the snappiness of the Arkham games, but it’s serviceable. Fuck the drone enemies though, they should not have as much health as they do. The game should give you double the momentum that it does IMO so you could use your abilities way more often. I’m in early game though, so maybe it gets better later.

The cutscenes are pretty decent, and the interactions between the characters are interesting. I mentioned Donatello earlier because the Knights really do come across like the Ninja Turtles in certain ways, with Alfred acting as their Splinter. I know a lot of folks were mad about the game not being about Batman, but it‘s nice exploring other characters in the bat family for once. Bruce’s brooding has gotten old.

I have a lot more to play in the game, but it’s a 6/10 type game so far. We’ll see if that changes.

Spiderman had the same issue with a fake/uninteresting open world. Mostly just buildings for you to swing on.
At least in Gotham Knights the crimes feel a bit more believable and have nice variety.

As for Robin, I was also curious about this. I think his traversal ability is meant more for combat as you can do silent takedowns from that state. Also to move around an area in stealth mode very easily as long as you can get high enough.
I also notice batgirl's glide is kinda meh as you eventually go down. For some characters I think the traversal abilities as strictly for traversal are far better than others. For others, their true utility comes in other circumstances.

Well I’m the end I ended up really liking the game.

I think beyond the performance issues the game just starts too slow. The slow drip of unlockable features just doesn’t cut it today. It makes first starting the game so confusing and lack luster.

But I really enjoyed the second half of the game.

A new update has been released for consoles.
This implements performance improvements like dynamic resolutions:
This patch contains more fixes for stability and issues that have been found since launch.

Stability:
  • Further optimization to improve framerate stability
  • Implemented dynamic resolution
  • Crash fixes
  • Server side update to help address co-op connection stability
https://gothamknights.bugs.wbgames.com/patch-notes

Anyone on console notice any improvement?

I've only just met Penguin.

Can I swap characters this early on and how?
Am I meant to be clearing all the crimes each night before heading back the belfry?

You can always swap characters back at the belfry, just walk up to the suits.

You can just do crimes if you want, you'll start to be stronger than the recommended level of the story missions, so just kinda do the story/villain missions as soon as you hit the same level.

This post I found about the game is probably more interesting than the game itself:
So I've seen people on the main thread say that the Gotham Knights Game is a game that is really white and lacking in terms of racial diversity and representation. And I say I have to agree.

Of all the playable characters it is only the white members of the Batfamily and no POC is playable. It's kind of jarring as there exist an Asian Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Middle Eastern Robin (Damian) and their white counterparts were picked over them. There is also the fact that other POC members of the Batffamily don't show up as well. No mention of Cassandra, Damian or Duke Thomas or even hints to the,, Luke Fox only gets mentioned, and Helena Bertillini the Huntress is portrayed as white despite being Afro-Italian since DC Rebirth.

The only major POC supporting characters is Renee Montoya who has a major role as a story ally at least and Lucius Fox is present but as someone to rescue and in a side mission for upgrades.

There is also the fact that while cops can be enemies in the game and the game does have the GCPD be corrupt and engage in police brutality this brought up as more of police corruption rather than the system itself being flawed (which is usually what happens when Batman deals with cops) and also stresses to have good cops be in the game and highlight them with Montoya. Cops are also the only enemies in the game that don't give XP and sometimes the game discourages you from fighting them. The game incorporates the Batfamily being supportive of progressive social movements but nothing really against standing up against cops with regards to how they disproportionally target POC for example especially in a game that has police corruption be a main theme

There is also the portayal of Talia once again which falls into the Morrison thing of portraying her as completely villainous without much nuance while also taking the chance to darken her skin and make her more visibily a WOC.

People have said these issues have prevented them from buying the game or making them hesitant and I definitely side with them here.

My only solace is that this person is probably deleting a twitter account this week, which is one less twitter account in the world.
Wtf did i just read?

I am lvl 16 and i think i missed some sort of faster travel. I only have a bike and quick travel. Or do i get more options in late game?

Seeing this on sale a few places. Just googled and saw where there was supposed to be a patch to address frame rate a couple of weeks ago. Did that ever happen?

I'm waiting on 60fps patch on consoles, but that will probably never happen I'm guessing. I'll just play on PC when it is dirt cheap.
I’m fairness the game runs more stable now on consoles than it did at launch, but its fundamental problems lie far beyond just technical performance.

It’s just not a very good game, regardless of framerate.

Think I may give it a shot either way. It is on sale for $40 and I have a $20 rewards certificate from Best Buy. If I don't like it I can sell it on eBay and get most of my money back.

Thanks.

I guess opinions are fairly split on this game.
I found it to be quite fun, especially in co-op, and will likely pick it back up again once the challenge mode drops.
The game is not going to win any awards, but most things are executed well, and the major dings against it are bad performance and it's not an "Arkham" game.
It's a solid 7-8 / 10 in my eyes and definitely worth picking up. If you do all the side villains and a bunch of open world missions you can get a decent 20 hours out of it and you will still need to play more to unlock all the abilities and pursue the harder challenges (which admittedly make the enemies more bullet spongy).

Can anyone who owns this on ps5 or SX tell me how its looking/feeling now after its received dynamic res patches? Does the game look noticeably lower res now? Or is the hit to resolution minor enough to not bother you? Sometimes dynamic res can make a game look kinda bad (marvels avengers on ps5)...

Thanks

Heroic assault is pretty cool, it's basically horde mode with three combat areas, and 30 levels in total.

It seems they fixed RT performance though, I can actually turn it on now without it turning into a stutter fest, I was driving around with RT enabled with 30-40fps.

Respect. They are out here giving entire free co-op modes and we have some charging for animations.

I might pick this up some time next year when I get some free time. I like a lot of what I saw with the open world gameplay.

New mode looks pretty rad.
Will likely go back into the game to level up and try out different characters and then try out the co-op trial mode.
Usually hate open world games with their little endless side activities, but somehow in this game it feels cool.
If it wasn't for the rough performance at launch this game would have gotten a much better reception. I hope they do some DLC with new villain stories.

I’ve noticed an improvement in frames since the update. Getting pretty consistent 60fps now.
