Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

If you have PS+, are already planning on getting a PS4 at some point, and are not cash starved, I don't see much reason to wait. Driveclub as a tech demo will be free, lots of f2p games available to download, indie titles for cheap, etc. Then maybe the reviews and forum praise of one of the games will catch your eye enough.

It's not like buying it means it must immediately replace your current gen system in the entertainment center.

Ahh, that's true. Drive Club and Outlast are gonna be free PS+ games.

But I'm sure that you can just "buy" them through the Sony Store (unless they restrict that somehow) without actually owning a PS4 so that when you get a PS4 you will have them in your PS+ account.

yep - this is my thoughts - you get 3 'free' games at launch and I'll buy the PS4 version of AC & watchdogs - BF4 I'm on the fence as a guy I play online with isn't 100% sure to get a PS4 at launch.

Completely and utterly tired of this generation. If it wasn't for GTA V I'd probably be done buying current gen console games altogether until the launch.

Price drop? Not going to happen in the first 2 years.

Waiting for games? I want to play DriveClub, Watch Dogs (and resell it a couple months later so PC is out). Plus, why would I want to wait for a ton of games when I can just buy them as they come out? I could save $10-15 per if I bought used but that doesn't really matter if I'm only buying one a month or so (plus GameFly, RedBox, etc ... ) I'm more of a fan of 3rd party games anyway so I'll be looking forward to those. Plus I'll be grabbing PS+!

Money? Not an issue for me, but I completely understand if people are wanting other things instead of the PS4. In fact I sold my PS3 a year ago to fund the purchase of a lens for a Croatia Vacatia. (I really couldn't justify the price of the lens without 'something' to chip away from the price) So I completely get that, budget accordingly.

Current Gen? I'm completely over it. I have been playing mostly PC (that I got during Steam sales) games with HDMI - out to my 60" HDTV. That and GTA V will tide me over. I can't really think of any game I want that is not coming to next gen consoles outside of GT6 (which will see a port) and The Last of Us (which will most likely get an "HD" release on PS4).

And honestly, I just love new gadgets, hooking up the cables, taking stuff out of the box, booting up and setting up my user account. Then being able to play the PS4 during my Christmas vacation? Fuck yeah, that sounds awesome. Plus building up a friends list that will last for years is always fun.

I'm in the same boat, I'll pm you on gaf once I'm in line that day, also with a coffee in hand.

I'm stoked can't wait, watch dogs gonna look sick on ps4. I could get it for pc, but I do like to trade in my games when I'm done with them. I'll just rebuy watchdogs during a steam sale with all the DLC.

Yea, to me right now it's a nobrainer.
Do that!
I'll mark my calendar to give a GAF PM shout out as well.

yeah, totally that buzz that only console launches bring...missed out on WiiU (by choice) won't be getting the Xbone so this is it until next next gen...so I'll be at the store at the earliest possible time!

Don't get the cancelling guys, wait a month of so...plenty of time to cancel before the big day - still got some PS4 news to come

I'm not so sure. Microsoft has kept on giving since E3. Sony responds with nothing. I might cancel too and see how things pan out.

I will probably have to move my PS4 buy to March, i need to buy new winter tires this October for my car and this is like buying a PS4 + two games :\

Microsoft has been playing catch up. Sony has been ahead on most of the stuff MSFT has been "giving" for the last 2 months.

One thing I will say about both is that it's a bit pre-mature to be feeling pre-launch fatigue since we have 2 big shows coming in GC and TGS. This is where the final pieces will come into place.

I sure do hope people have the common sense to know that the launch lineups are not finalized so if some think things look paltry then you have no idea how many games will launch not only at retail but on the DD services.

This really makes sense. >_>

Let me know when MS 'gives' enough to be in line with what Sony has provided and prevented.

Truly, I really don't care what console anyone prefers. I just don't think it's a good idea to equate MS's corrective actions to very abrasives and anti consumer policies as "giving".

No hard feelings, just responding to your comment. :)

Anyone very hesitant on an Xbox One because of how reactionary they have seemingly been since E3?

I mean they have been making huge alterations to the Xbox One (for the better to consumers, yes) ever since E3

- online DRM
- used games
- indie policy
- family sharing
- GPU clock speed

What is to stop them from dropping the price 6 months after the release if its not catching on or lagging a little behind the PS4?

Microsoft seems too reactionary right now honestly.

Yup, as usual I'll just wait it out. The last console I bought on launch was the Wii, and the only reason was to experience the new controls. Never again (though I love my Wii ;-) ); there is nothing 'exciting' on the table that I can't wait a year or 2 (with a few price drops) for.

For me it's the easiest next gen console purchase ever. £349 is a steal, especially given inflation along with VAT increases, and given the price of the Xbox One (£430). We're basically paying cost price for it, and that's a deal too good to pass up. I was expecting the console to cost £385 to £400 at least.

I'll likely buy Killzone SF (I'm a huge fan of the franchise) and WatchDogs (looks awesome). Which is plenty for me till InFamous SS comes out. That and I get DriveClub (which could still be great), Ray's the Dead, Outlast (really looking forward to this one) and Secret Ponchos all free with PS+, along with the F2P games. I already have PS+ on the PS3, and because it carries over I save another £40.

If I get bored I'll probably pick up AC Black Flags or BF4, point is, there are way too many games launching with these new consoles. Bare in mind the biggest games for me are GT6 and GTAV which I will also be getting for the PS3. I honestly don't want to deal with any more ropey PS3/360 ports of games, and barely play on my PC these days despite having a decent set up (GTX 570 SSC and i7 at 3.8ghz).

I feel like their business plan is extremely weak and also their reactions fall in line with the rumor they were caught off guard in regards to releasing a console this year.

Exactly. The only reason to even still get a console is the exclusives.

You can say this about PC till the dogs come home.

PC is my multipurpose device though and I need it. Just let me know when PC gets all the JRPG's that consoles and handhelds get as well as the combined 1st party output from Sony/Nintendo. Then we'll talk.

Until then, PC is king but consoles like PS4 and WiiU are absolutely viable as far as games are concerned.

Your doubts are understandable. The lineup is weak:

Watch dogs? It's Ubisoft so it could very well be a flawed game, like AC was.

Battlefield 4? This game should deliver in spades, though new players will get crushed like bugs by veterans.

Knack? Will try the demo, but skeptical.

Infamous? I'll wait for the reviews. Could go either way.

Driveclub? No 60fps, right?

etc.

The best thing to do is to wait until there is one or more free games that pop up in the Playstation Plus store that you want and buy it then.

Again the games only available on consoles like the JRPG's fall under the exclusives for me as they are not available on PC. Why even bring up the handhelds? They aren't a console and are a completely different discussion.

So again outside of the exclusives there is zero reason to own a console. This is from someone that is day 1ing a PS4.

Get the box that has the games you want to play. It's as simple as that. If neither box has games you want to play at launch wait until spring 2014 when all the heavy hitters start coming out.

The only reason I preordered one is because EB games gives extra trade credit towards it and I got $300 in credit. But the games I preordered for it I am thinking about getting on Wii U (Watch Dogs and the gamepad makes so much sense, I'll save ACIV for the PS4). I really want to use those triggers. I might get Knack.

There aren't any launch games I'd like to get either, but the hardware and the machine itself is pretty appealing to me, if ffxiv was a launch game, I'd probably jump on it.

I've had one pre-ordered since E3, but I've been second guessing it too. Probably going to cancel. There are just no games that really interest me. I'm going to wait until a week or two before launch and see what the game lineup is and the demand. Until we see more footage I'm not really interested.

After E3 I was certain I was buying the PS4 first. Microsoft's DRM reversal opened up the door to me potentially buying the XB1 though, and the closer we get to launch the more I believe that's going to end up being the first console I buy.

I simply like more of their exclusives in the first 6 months. Particularly Forza and Titanfall.

Not that I disagree but the output on handhelds these days is closer to consoles more than ever. We have been getting some high quality console like games since PSP. Vita and 3ds are more powerful as well. I have seen Vita's Tianfall!

Regarding your 2nd statement - There is absolutely reason to get a console if you don't have a good PC and even if you did, there is still reason enough for the output of exclusives. Look at PS3, you don't think all that talent will bring games to PS4? A studio like Ready at Dawn is highly proven and finally has a chance in the big leagues with The Order 1866. There is absolute reason to get a PS4 and while the launch may still be coming together, there is plenty of reasons to go with a PS4.

AsI noted, many don't have the rigs to run these games well. You also have the console UI's that Steam BP mode is only catching up on and still making strides. You cannot underestimate the convenience of a console like PS4.

I'm in the same boat. I might cancel my pre-order. I have enough games to keep me busy. Consoles don't hit their strides until later anyway. I might get an XB1 as their exclusive appeal to me more.

To be honest, I'm getting the PS4 at launch for Battlefield 4 alone. And what about The Witness? Is it confirmed for launch?

I don't believe The Witness is a launch game. I want to say Blow mentioned a 2014 release, but I could be mistaking it with Below's release which the creator said was pretty far off.

I've also been thinking twice about it. As of now I still have my preorder and its paid off, but since the Only game I plan on getting is BF4, that's a lot of money just for battlefield.

And let's be realistic here there will be no price cut on the PS4 for a long time......

No, but there could be more reliable machines made after 6 months or so.

What? That makes no sense... Multi platform should almost just count as PC exclusives IMO. The visual and performance upgrade over consoles is a huge jump.

I'm not even considering getting either console at launch. Earliest I'd get either is Q2 of 2014 when more games drop. Got a high end pc so might hold out for a long while until exclusives I really want come out.

I'm really hoping for some kind of announcement before launch that reaffirms I should preorder it. At this point I am pondering cancelling and hoping MS shaves $100 off their price. Infamous looks pretty good and I definitely like that its the more powerful system, but MS has been showing off more games I am interested in like Forza, DR3, Killer Instinct, and of course Titanfall.

Yeah I think i'm there with you. I know i'm gonna get a quality exclusive in Forza 5 plus the fact that there seems to be quite a bit of new things the Xbone is gonna be able to do compared to the 360 seals the deal. Knowing a new Halo comes out next year helps lol.

I'm waiting for Gamescom but I'll prolly cancel mine too. Not feeling these next-gen systems yet as the games look like the same old shit. I'll stick with Steam until Naughty Dog releases a game I think.

I know there won't be a lot there for launch. There never is. But I do like getting the systems early sometimes, just so I can watch them evolve.

I never buy at launch. I always wait at least a year so they can work out the kinks and it seems like there's always that one great title that really shines that following holiday season. For me it was Gears and Uncharted that came out a year after their respective console launches that made me jump in.

Once my PS4 E3 related orgasm subsided, and I had a look at which games were being released in and around the launch, I felt the same way. This is because the PS4 games I want most are also being released on the 360 and PS3.

Right now I'm still umming and ahhing about it but am in favour of buying at launch (I pre-ordered one asap). Hopefully Sony will announce new games at GamesCom for the launch window release and that will put an end to all the internal PS4 pondering.

We've already heard of all launch titles from both Sony and MS.

Launch window is more important than launch line up. There's a massive number of games for launch. Any more and it'd only be further saturated. Let's not pretend like games like COD, BF4 and less so, Watch Dogs and AC won't clean up in sales. It's what comes beyond that counts.

You want a steady stream of games, not a front loaded launch and an empty following year.

I've been going a bit back and forth on it. I've got the money already put away from trading in games, gadgets and sticking aside birthday cash, but the hype is beginning to fade. I've got a gaming PC that runs everything I want it to, so for the most part multiplatforms aren't a bother, so I'm really only in for the Day 1 exclusives. Killzone and Knack are both appealing to me, but wondering if both are worth getting the console day 1 for. Considering I'll end up getting it for Infamous release anyway, I'm edging toward sticking with it (can't see a price drop happening in that time), I'm also part of the "OHH MUST PLAY WITH NEW SHINY!" brigade, and I'm also considering AC4 and Watch_Dogs for it, depending how the PC versions of those come out and compares to the PS4 (considering AC3's dodgy PC port).

What? That makes no sense... Multi platform should almost just count as PC exclusives IMO. The visual and performance upgrade over consoles is a huge jump.

Your opinion is wrong and I probably have a better PC than you (wanna fight about it? :P).

The thing that you or me can't contest is that most of the known world does not have access to a high end PC and these consoles are delivering close to high end performance on an optimization level.

Consoles make perfect sense when it comes to ease and not dealing with the caveats and classic pitfalls that people associate with building and maintaining a PC even though we all know that putting a PC together these days is like building Lego's. Piece it all together and turn it on and install your stuff.

I have a Knack bundle reserved through Amazon, but I'm more than likely going to cancel it the closer we get to launch. Between all the games releasing on Wii U, 3DS, Vita, and even PS3 by Fall/Winter's end, I don't think it'll be worth investing in one right now. It's more about not having the time than my actual desire to get the system. Will probably wait until Spring/Summer of next year to realistically buy one.

With games like KZ, Infamous, Knack, Destiny, BF4, The Division, Deep Down, Watch Dogs, I have no qualms about getting a PS4 on day one.
