This is exactly my problem with this show. That third episode. We keep having things that would've been cool to see but no instead of getting to see them instead they thought it was more important to show two guys picking strawberries, fucking in bed, etc. Two side characters that no one is even going to remember because they have nothing to do with the rest of the series. I don't have a problem with having gay characters. I have a problem when for some reason the showrunners think they deserved more time than everything else
 
Good but not as great as the game. Prett much the story of the show so far. It's frustrating to see them copy pasta so much from the game but when it comes time to things that matter they change things up just a little bit but it kinda takes away from the impact.
 
Good episode tonight, pretty much covered what I expected. They cut out all the infected from the story, but fair enough: it's pretty clear they're on a budget with this series.

Next week should be pretty good, considering it's the finale: they also seem to be cutting out most of Salt Lake and heading straight for the hospital. Hoping some of that HBO dragon money was saved so we can have some infected in the last episode. As I've said previously, I expect a 28 Days Later inspired ending for this...

Nah.

The tension between the two leads alone will keep people coming back. People will want to see retribution, they will be shocked and angry... and that will keep them watching and eventually they will be emotionally exhausted and unsure how it resolves.

It will basically be the experience the game had if you weren't spoiled the opening bits.

10 years later were starting to realize many people never actually understood Joel or this game and just liked the idea of being a grizzled old guy killing folks without breaking a sweat XD

Great episode. Damn that chopping scene, Bella's acting in this episode is really great.
Glad that they still keep both of my favorite scenes.
The interrogation scene , game version is better but the chopping scene I think the show is better.

its just straight up goofy that Pedro Pascal is playing the same exact role in two of the biggest tv shows currently. as an escort for a kid that he first dislikes but eventually becomes attached to.

how is the universe this cosmically unoriginal

Episode 8 is very faithful to the game. Of course they trimed the fat, it's a tv show they'll never show Joel opening hundreds of drawers and killing dozens of infected.
Good acting, brutal ending and now just a bee line to the hospital.

The villain using religious manipulation in a zombie apocalypse is so overdone. The walking dead did it and z nation did it. So it became more tropey and lacked the tension because we know what will happen.

And where was everyone else in that resort?
 
I'm saying they trimmed the fat. They did it to develop characters, including minor ones. It's a TV show. It's drama. You won't see Joel searching for scissors and scotch every room and strangle 20 raiders then killing 15 infected between each morsel of dialogue. Different media, different approach to tell the same story.
 
loving it, bella was fire.
though this one could have used more airtime. maybe even 2 episodes.
where were all the town folks at the end , could have seen joel go through some of them at least.

I dont think that they've changed the story much. But TLOU is all about execution. The story is nothing special by itself.

The acting, the emotion in the scenes, the scene composition ...

My sister have never played the game and she is feeling Joel and Ellie's relationship rushed. There was not enough meat in the series to establish their relationship.

That was something hard to pull of, because of the limited runtime + not being able to develop characters through gameplay, but they failed. At least for my sister and me.

I dont think the series is bad. Its a decent adaptation. But its by far the worst way to experience the story.

Stuff like Joel not stopping Ellie at this last episode is just inexcusable, imo

And lord almighty, its nowhere near a 9.0 in terms of quality so far. House of the Dragon runs circles around this in terms of quality.

One had nothing to do with the other lol I guess some people don't know how tv shows are made. The budgets for each episode are roughly $10 million, that episode with the strawberries was likely cheaper to make than most of the other episodes.
 
I think David was better here than in the game. The actor did a great job, the warmth of his delivery combined with his horrifying words and actions was very unsettling.
 
Honestly for me the show is getting worse each episode. I don't understand why it was getting such high praise from critics. I agree with what some people in the thread are saying about the pacing, it's so inconsistent from one episode to the next. The thing is, I've seen shows that did just as well with critics that are WAY better.

There's nothing to choose from.

I said it sticks closely to the original story and that if I wanted the story from the game, then I would play the game.

This means I can accept changes that have been made due to budget, time constraints, or just preference. The way they changed the scene with Ellie and David doesn't bother me. I thought Bella's performance was great, and I don't mind Joel stopped Ellie outside instead of inside.

Some scenes are going to feel rushed, but as for their relationship, it's believable to me. If Ellie is making Joel laugh in episode 4, then I can put together in my head that in 3 months they would be even closer by episode 6.
 
Good episode. Bit rushed though. We could have done with David and Ellie fighting off the infected.

Whole thing Should have probably been 10 episodes, not 9.

Glad they kept how savage both Joel and Ellie are.

Loving the series, but the game remains the best version of this.

Good episode. Very tense at moments. Really good performance by Bella. And Pedro.

Again, ideally I would want more time spent with these characters and the new introduced ones. The preacher went kind of abruptly from "maybe he's a better leader than apocalypse kidergarden teacher" to
insane pedophile rapist

Still good I suppose for the budget they had. Hopefully HBO will raise the budget and they'll be able to do more stuff and better in season two, in spite of the... thing.

I expect the podcast for this episode to be a fun one. I've yet to listen to it.
 
How do you guys think Riley died in the previous episode?

Did Ellie shoot her when she changed? Or did Ellie leave her with the gun and Riley shot herself?

My man just woke up from illness, barely moving, and already had to stab and torture dudes 🤣

Anyway, good episode, but I preferred the game version overall. Unfortunately the feeling of things being rushed is becoming more evident.

They saved money on Season 1's infected and bricks budget so that they can have have the ratking in season 2.

Complete dogshit episode.
This was by far the best part in the game for me and they completely gutted it; starting winter early was indeed a huge red flag, heck joel not picking up the bow earlier was as well; now dumbass ellie wants to go out hunting by herself with a rifle? Like gunshots wouldn't draw attention to her smh..
What the hell is it with this show, about a zombie apocalypse, trying it's damned hardest not to show any zombies? The entire encounter in the game was great and pretty tense.
This has just turned into another inter-personal human drama piece; you can almost completely cut out the zombies and nothing changes.
Also didn't buy david at all, the game's version had a kind of intensity that seems to be almost lost by this same old by the numbers 'religious cult leader' archetype.
The "baby girl" line also felt odd/unearned, because joel and ellie have had fuck all of on screen bonding time.
Only tiny good part here was joel torturing the dude.

This ep made the show go from average/decent but mostly boring, to complete trash.
 
If the new Super Mario Bros Movie doesn't have 8 worlds worth of jumping and stomping goombas and respect the lore, I know one old school gamer who's gonna be pissed
 
Good episode. Though I think most of the 1:1 adaptations that were happening in this episode felt like they were running out new ideas to deviate and just copy/paste just to get it done.

First episode was good, second was okay, from there on, agenda nonsense.

Even from those screen shots I put in my post above (The one where Toons quoted me thinking i want.. 13 year old kids to show breasts, somehow. Utterly missing the point..) is showing more agendas telling kids it's 'okay' to wear 'binders', oh and p.s, GAY is great..

Just agenda trash.

The whole things a piss take wrapped in 2023 nonsense.
 
I really liked the episode. It's just a shame that I felt like the ending fell flat. The game was better by a mile. They seriously couldn't add a few more minutes to let Joel inside the obviously burning house?

They don't get what made the game so special. That's been obvious for a while now.
 
This episode was an improvement from last week. Good Thing Joel heals right on time to kill some dudes. The Voice actor guy died so quickly.

He was great. At this point I really do think Bella Ramsey was a bad choice for Ellie. She is very stiff. She was good for what was asked of her in GoT but that was very one note. And she is till playing that note here and it isn't good.
 
I finally got around to watching the episode AFTER skimming through this thread. I don't get the pacing complaints - is that the new buzz critique?

When I replay TLOU I usually dread this part of the game because it's too long. The deer hunt at the start. The area with the Bloater fight. Running around as Ellie with impaired vision. BORING.

Thought this episode did an awesome job of remixing this whole section and making it perfect length for television, whilst basically achieving the same outcome as the game.

Was surprised at how good David was, before the show started I thought he'd be the hardest to pull off.

Imagine an in-game model of the TV version with Nolans' voice. Would be genuinely scary.
