Well, it looks like the PQ of The Fountain is pretty decent overall from this review. Does anyone else agree? And once again, Warner gimps the audio track for the blu-ray edition. Despite using a BD-50 disc, they are really taking a dive with this. :/

Blu-Ray is a secondary format for Warner, third tier if you consider 1) DVD -> 2) HD-DVD -> 3) BR. I bought the HD-DVD version of The Fountain and it is wonderful, but that score really deserves a TrueHD soundtrack.

How about we stir up this thread with the top 5 HD discs you've seen (regardless of format)?

Mine (all HDDVD since I've yet to see a BR movie):

1. King Kong
2. Happy Feet
3. Batman Begins
4. Cinderella Man
5. The Departed

I'm guessing once I get Planet Earth, my top five will be raped. Plus, I've probably seen a lot less HD movies than most of you guys. :lol

just speaking for hd dvd, as i havent picked up a ps3 for brd yet

for some of the best pq you probably want to check out seabisquit, chronicles of riddick, Planet Earth, children of men, hulk, corpse bride, mission impossible 3, i would rate all of these above your last 3 selections

My best-looking HD viewings... in no order

Planet Earth
The Departed
Casino Royale
Reservoir Dogs (seriously, this looks great in HD, overlooked release for whatever reason)
Deja Vu

I haven't seen all that many-- many 15-20 HD movies.

:lol I actually came in here to post that my original assesment was incorrect. It isn't as bad as I mentioned. It isn't the best but far from I made it out to be.

Casino Royale.....my most wanted Blu Ray movie, BY FAR. Also, I was watching Deja Vu on dvd last week and I told my wife that it was one of the best looking dvd's I'd seen in a long time. I can only imagine how much better the Blu Ray looks.

Well, assessing PQ is a subjective thing, unless it blatently obvious that it sucks. I just want to get a general assessment. There's just a lot of eye candy in the movie so I hope that the transfer is all right.

That's what I mean, shame on Warner for intentionally gimping the blu-ray release.

The best release I've seen thus far is Layer Cake on Blu-ray. Others with great transfers were Casino Royale and A Scanner Darkly. I wouldn't say that I have a top five yet since I only have a few BRDs.

Layer Cake transfer is fabulous, though.

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
Happy Feet is by far the best looking release Ive seen. Horrid movie, but the CG is unreal and the transfer is spot on perfect. I couldnt find a single thing in it to complain about at all.

I guess I would go:

1) Happy Feet
2) Scanner Darkly
3) Riddick
4) Kong
5) Planet Earth

I thought Layer cake was fine, but the Departed and Casino Royale is my top choice so far.
Haven't seen The Departed yet, sadly. I thought Layer Cake was crisper than CR though... even though CR looks fantastic.

In no particular order:

King Kong
Chronicles of Riddick
Smokin' Aces
A Scanner Darkly
Tokyo Drift
Lucky Number Slevin
Children of Men
Planet Earth (for the shots that were actually shot in 1080p)

Casino Royale has a great transfer but the colors are way too hot for my liking.

My top 5 that I have seen I guess would be
1) The Prestige
2) Casino Royale
3) Planet Earth
4) King Kong
5) Open Season

Batman Begins, Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, The Departed, Kung Fu Hustle would be next in line

Well actually they gimped both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray release in the audio department. It's just that they gimped the Blu-ray version a tad bit more.

Oh snap, my Planet Earth HD DVD just got here. I've literally never seen anything like it. I had to drag myself out of my house and back into work at the end of my lunch break. I got to see about 15 minutes of Pole to Pole, but I can safely say that all the hype was well deserved. The migration scene with the hunt is insane. And I caught a glimpse of a river scene. My goodness, I'm going to have a good time this weekend.

...Not that blu-ray needs any saving.

Pirates was already released on DVD not many ppl will buy it again even for Blu Ray.

Apocalyto is just pure awesomeness wrapped in a ball of blood and guts.
Everyone needs to watch this movie.

For anybody looking for POTC 1 & 2, they have them already for sale at FYE for $34.99 each

So tempting, but I don't have a BD player and I already have them on DVD, I hate double dipping.

They'll be $29.99 each at Best Buy, and you get $10 off if you buy both together.

$29.99 each at Circuit City, plus you get a $15 giftcard if you buy both together.

Huge hi-def disc sale going on at Fry's today.

Hmm top 5... (all Bluray)

1. Crank
2. Kingdom of Heaven
3. Black Hawk Down
4. The Prestige
5. Casino Royale

Nothing I've seen comes close to Crank.

Top 5 HD DVD movies I've seen in no particular order:

Planet Earth
Children of Men
Seabiscuit
King Kong
NIN: Beside You In Time

That's just off the top of my head... I'm sure the Matrix will be in that list once I see it next week.

Whats that? POTC 1 & 2 at positions 17&18 in the Amazon DVD charts? Not Bluray, DVD overall

Matrix

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.
Sweet amazon lowered my matrix hdvd price by $5 :)

ditto....Casino Royale did really well for itself though when it came to the exterior shots at the beginning

but yeah...Crank is still unmatched in my book

Sweet, glad I decided to look in this thread ... just ordered Futurama season 4 to complete my set :)

BTW, for those of you who don't have a Fry's nearby, at least some of those prices are good online, too

I'm currently watching G4 and Disney is really, really pushing the Pirates of the Caribbeans BD releases. Just saw a commercial that is almost a minute long explaining almost every exclusive features that are on the discs with "Blu-ray" being more mentioned than in this entire thread.

cmon has the planet earth HDDVD amazon fiasco teach you nothing?

yes, I feel dirty for quoting Amazon sales rankings :p

But I think it illustrates that Pirates are at least popular (without directly comparing to other releases or teh format warz!1), which was the intent as you seemed quite dismissive of them.

Planet Earth HD DVD is currently at #5 on Amazon DVD sales page. Amazon isn't really relevant anymore.

I don't think you'd find anyone in here who believes that the Pirates movies aren't popular. That doesn't mean they're good though. I'd still buy them if I had Blu-Ray, just for the audio/visuals.

My post was a direct reply to Kabuki Waq who seemed to be downplaying pirates 'as they'd already been out on DVD'.

And I know amazon rankings get a lot of shit, but they do give you a general picture - they aren't completely useless.

eg Planet Earth HDDVD being at number 5 in the overall DVD charts is great too.

Bad Art ™
FYI (i don't feel like making a new thread) AnyDVD HD can already decrypt HDDVDs with the new modified key (ie: Matrix trilogy + all the new release starting now)

Thus the key is broken before the official release date.

God bless Slysoft

voila

Serious question: with the Toshiba offers last month, is it possible that HD DVD hardware outsold Blu Ray hardware INCLUDING Ps3? No console bashing if anyone responds. I'd like to know how much hardware Toshiba sold.

Probably not. It took Toshiba 8 months to sell 100,000 units so I doubt that they were about to sell that much in one month even with a price drop.

Warner Bros. Kicks off Total HD!

Warner Bros is hedging its bets in the High Definition (HD) format war with the introduction of HD discs compatible with Blu-ray and HD DVD players.

Warner is calling its new solution ‘Total HD’ and spokespeople for the company have said that major retailers across the US have agreed to stock the discs.

The hybrid HD Discs will be available in US in the second half of this year with the launch of MI:3, Batman Begins and Superman Returns. If the format proves to be successful in the US, expect to see them on these shores some time in the new year.

Executives from Warner have indicated that the price of Total HD discs will not differ substantially from standard Blu-ray or HD DVD. This will come as a relief to consumers who feel they have been pawns in the HD format wars.

Some industry insiders have criticised Warner’s approach, saying it prolongs the HD disc battle by creating a third format. Letting Sony and Toshiba do battle would lead to a quicker resolution, some critics say.

However, Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros. Entertainment stated that 'From our perspective, it's good for consumers. It's more flexible and it takes away the whole fear of buying the wrong format’.

The only thing certain at the moment is that the HD disc format war is not about to cool down just yet.

Boy, new fun is around the corner... Will they be a hit or a miss? Will blu-rayers cave if that's the only way to get Batman Begins or will they just go out and buy a HD-DVD player since the cost are coming down fast?

Looks like Paramount made their decision on wheather or not to go with Total HD. :lol

Stay Tuned...............

Popcorn ready.................. :D

Will they be 50GB BluRay discs? Can they be?

I suppose I don't care if they just release multi-disc sets like they do for DVD when they get too big.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
If the price is right, I'd definitely pick up a few movies. Mostly though, this would only be useful if exclusive companies like Uni and Disney were the ones who made the Total HD discs.

Yes Blu Ray only fans will buy the TrueHD Batman Begins, and it is pretty odd that Paramount never put out a press release about TrueHD

Yeah this really isn't all the big. As of now it is basically giving the companies that support both formats a unified way to release disks.
