I don’t like female protagonists.

If this thread isn't some supreme troll
I'd bet real money it isn't. The forum has gotten noticeably more hostile regarding this sort of talk despite the ostentible "no politics" rule. Eventually lurkers like this end up making threads like it.

oh well, what can ya do. Just a reminder that we're a small snippet of the gaming community (even if every one of the 160k+ members here were active we'd be dwarfed by your average Youtube gaming video in views/numbers alone) and a lot of people really aren't like this.

And for the record, Resetera too is a small snippet of the gaming community-don't bring that site up as a gotcha.

I get where you're coming from OP.

I like both, but I have to say I'm completely over female protags that are just (usually badly) written as male protags. It works in a few examples like Samus where the focus is more on the gameplay than the character, but I'm really tired of girlboss manwomen. Especially if I hear them quip to themselves multiple times in the first half hour. Not that I love hearing male characters do it either. I want the characters to mostly be invested in what's happening in the game at the time, not being 3 levels separated above what's going on, on the screen.

I like them. But also i couldn't care less about relating to a character. This whole relation thing has never crossed my mind ever and i wouldn't even know it was a thing if i didnt see people on the internet talking about it.
A big part of being a good game are the characters in it.

If Kratos wasn’t a man it wouldn’t be a good game.

If Nathan Drake wasn’t a man it wouldn’t be a good game.

If Sam Fisher wasn’t a man it wouldn’t be a good game.

Hell, they replaced Solid Snake with Raiden who is semi-female and it almost ruined the game.
A God of War like Wonder Woman game would be sick AF.

Tomb Raider is a good game.

and really? Sam FIsher? That's like the genre that fits a female protagonist the best.

Also no, the characters dont make the game good, they can make the game better, the best characters are not gonna make a game that's shit to play, good.

Honestly I mostly agree with this.

I’m a guy, I mainly want to play as a male character who kicks ass and saves the day. Is there anything wrong with that? And if I play a female character, at least make her attractive and not some girlboss who acts like a poorly written male character.

The ones forcing Strong Woman protagonists into fucking everything are mostly just angry that boys and girls are different and that some IPs/genres are aimed toward men. And they think it’s their sacred duty to fix society’s wrongs.
This man is 100% correct. Well said indeed.

If they're cool looking, not necessarily hot, I don't mind. But it's frequently western devs making ugly men and women. Say what you will about pretty boys in Genshin Impact, western artists (or involved in those productions) just produce lame looking protags far too often, and it's nothing new. Need examples? (US) Avengers vs (Chinese) Marvel Rivals. Or NetherRealms (PS3/PS4 era) vs nearly every Asian fighter. And even when they pick the anime route it often has that fake-anime look therefore ugly look. My point is, just make your game and characters looks cool, that's a good start.

Relating to a character is low on my needs. It just rarely resonates that way. Difference can be intriguing (except the DEI work).

Also, a bunch of other people here brought it up but you don't need to relate to a character for a game to be good. Nobody here is actually a spy, a god slayer or a distraught gunman.

A lot of men in games do things we would never in real life. You honestly think we're gonna go and gun down a whole bunch of criminals? Most people here have backs too fucked up from old age to even entertain the idea. We still root for the protagonist in the end because they're cool/we agree with their motives/they've got a lot to protect/etc.

games that are too "relatable" end up being boring, i want a look into someone else's mind.

Then if it doesn’t matter just make everyone an androgynous humanoid.

Gender matters.

Threads where the OP shows signs of retardation in their opening statement should automatically go live. Don't they have AI that could quickly check new threads for being dumb?

Don't care either way. Enjoyed games playing as a dude and as a chick.
But Fem Shep is the only way to play ME

Dont care, character just has to be well written and believable in the setting. Chloe in Uncharted? No problem. Kassandra in Odyssey? No problem. Jill, Claire,Lara,Samus, Selene, etc all fantastic.
BUT caveat if their ugly, arrogant, misandrist excuses for the devs own ideology then no.

I pressed X to doubt.

A well written female character will have female issues. Why would I as a man enjoy experiencing that? I don’t. At all. And if you’re going to write in male issues for her, then the game falls apart entirely because women aren’t men and they’ll never be men.
I'm not fan of DEI or whatever, but it's nearly 2025, what is a female issue? Did I miss the mission in Forspoken where the MC had to stop into Fantasy Walgreens to pick up some tampons?

I have no problem with female protagonists, in fact they are welcomed. I do have a problem with the fact that western games went from 8 to 80. Now, every single fking game game has a female protagonist and is a sin to have a male protagonist. That's the problem I have. It isn't inclusivity if you exclude str8 white men, now it is?
Str8 white man are to blame for all injustices in the world in the mind of this people and that's the base for this woke movement.

No, Meg Man is clearly a dude. They call him he and his name is "man". He has no male reproductive organs but is still male.
What makes "him" a male?? It's "100%" made of metal just like a metal bar.

The fact that he’s called he and that the original series says Roll is his sister robot and he is her brother. They’re both robots, but clearly one is a male and the other is a female. Even the guides have his gender as male.
In the best case here he identifies as a male and his sister as a female. 🤷‍♂️

Depends on the game, I was a big Tomb Raider fan and the Original Lara Croft was great, i like Emily in Dishonored 2, Kassandra in AC Odyssey as i thought her voice acting was better and i've played as Nora in Fallout 4 as well as a male so it doesn't bother me as long as it fits the game.

Man some of you white knight virgins need to go on somehwere with your virtue signaling. All the dude did was stated his opinion. In many ways gaming is demographically mostly men. Just look at twitch streams and see who is streaming. I don’t really like watching action movies with movies as the lead either. That’s just me. I agree in some ways. I will play with either gender, or alien or robot but I agree it’s annoying when a game obviously forces in women to be politically correct. If it make sense in the story it’s ok but when the girl is running and gunning with a 70lb backpack on her back and kicking the ass of huge giant men in the process it kind of takes me away from the story. I know all games are fiction but any part of realism that you can add to a game in my opinion imparts more immersion. I agree that gameplay trumps all but lately how they have shoehorned every lead character being a minority or woman is obvious pandering to the woke world and I think it’s sick that they think we are all this stupid not to notice it. That’s my biggest gripe.

I have no issue with a female protagonist. I just want to trans protagonist at this point.
