Sucks that Nvidia gimped the 690 with that VRAM. I absolutely love the engineering and craftsmanship of the 690 and Titan. If the 690 had 4GB, it would be nearly perfect.

Sucks to hear. :(

Getting my 690 GTX back tomorrow hopefully. How bad is the stuttering with 2GB of VRAM? On Infinite of course.

Infinite has stuttering issues out of the box regardless of your VRAM. I can't comment from personal experience as I have more than 2GB, but reading the Guru 3D Infinite review they recommend reducing AA and some settings if you've got 2GB (if playing on Ultra).

index.php

Above you can see a wide variety of in-game selectable quality modes @ 2560x1600. We switch in-between the image quality modes (Low to Ultra) to monitor frame buffer utilization. As you can see we are hovering at the 1.5 GB of graphics memory with FXAA enabled starting at High quality mode settings already. Once you increase the quality settings towards Ultra mode you start to reach a turning point where the game almost hits 2 GB of graphics memory. The measurement shown above is fairly similar and applicable for 1920x1080/1200 and 2560x1600. Now not everywhere in the game that much graphics memory is used, but there are some critical points in-game where you will reach or even pass the 2GB in combination with the highest quality modes. If you'd apply an exclusive AA mode like MSAA though graphics card drivers, we have no doubt you'll breach the 2GB threshold. So be careful with that.

Overall the advise is simple enough, make sure you have a graphics card with 2 GB of graphics memory when using High to Ultra image quality modes. Please keep in mind though that memory utilization will vary a bit per level, it's not a very precise thing to measure. As such take these values as an indication, not a precise measurement.

Before we move onwards into the conclusion it is handy to know how much graphics memory the game requires in a preferred resolution. You'll notice that 2GB graphics card are sufficient and that's the number this game has been aiming on. A graphics card with 2 GB of graphics memory minimum is really recommended by us. Should you have less available and run into performance issues, the easiest way out preventing frames from being swapped back and forth in that frame buffer is to select lower quality settings or disable AA levels.

Anyway, 2GB minimum for your graphics card, it is the magic number to find Elizabeth ;)

Speaking of doghouse, I reformatted my wifes C: drive tonight for a fresh install, and apparently she lost a ton of pictures. Does anybody have any experience with recovering lost files on a formatted drive?

I'm trying a couple freeware programs right now, but I don't seem to be having much luck. Next step would be to take it to a recovery place.

You'll be fine with the 630w PSU, assuming it's of decent/good quality.

Cool. Its a corsair hx620 so that will offset the price quite a bit.

My new order is

1 Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001

1 Palit GeForce GTX Titan 6GB

1 Crucial M4 SSD 128GB

Thanks again for all your help guys. Would have been gutted once I realized I blew my wad on an SLI setup.

Seems like the issue will get a lot worse down the line since next gen games will likely use a lot more vram as well. Maybe I'll just sell my 690GTX and buy myself a titan...

Jesus... I'm sitting on Amazon with a Titan in my cart about to hit place order.

knitoe, the thought has crossed my mind. I'm going through all kinds of mental gymnastic to justify it.

Not a bad idea. You should pause and consider two. They do look pretty sweet. Shameless pic of mine:

One is good enough, if you go through with it you'll be satisfied

How's your titans temps?

On stock the top card (far right) is usually in the 78c area. Second card is usually 4c cooler. I have a slight OC of +106 gpu clock +107 mem, with power at 106% and temp target at 90c. Comes close to the temp target at times. For the most part mid-low 80s.

Would love to throw em under water...

I... need to sleep on this.

Good choice :p

What case is that? I always wanted a case with the window on the right side.

Actually there are none available at the usual places I shop... this will give me some time to think. Maybe when I get my 690GTX tomorrow I will just be happy with it and forget about this whole thing. There really isn't any reason for me to want to upgrade. I just bought the thing five months ago!

We all know how this ends though...

That would be the Silverstone FT02. Truly a great case. It's not the easiest to work in due to it being somewhat outdated ( I got mine 2 years ago), but damn if it's not solid and impressive in person. Aluminum body, hardly any plastic. The HDD racks might be the only plastic in the case.

When they get to 80C, they become too loud for my taste. As for going water, I did that 6 years ago. It's probably much better now, but when I did it, I spent way too much time in testing and maintenance. And, if I ever need to move thing around, it was a pain in the ass. Now, I just want to plug and play.

Ok, I ordered the titan. The only other solution I came up with was buying a 1080p monitor to game with, but I'm too in love with 1440p tbh.

Thanks again for costing me money guys. I guess I better go read the thread on super-sampling now and learn how to take some screen-shot porn.

Really the only thing stopping me.. My feels are pretty much yours to a t

I only see crysis 3 go up to like 1.5

Not possible unless you're not running it maxed.

You finally got them under control now?

Yeah. That original debut Titan driver really messed with my machine. YouTube would flicker, I'd get all types of crashes, etc. Dunno what was up but everything after that has been good.

Indeed. :(

I was perfectly happy... but then I had to read about how my 690GTX secretly sucks. Well, I won't be out too much at least. What did you end up selling your 690 for Smokey?

Bioshock Infinite uses more than 2GB and that's at 1080p and Ultra settings.

I wouldn't buy a card with less than 3GB VRAM

Hey Smokey, that's gotta be dynamic ram or something right? Like it's using that much because you have a lot type of thing? Otherwise it's surprising that a console port will use that much VRAM. I guess what I'm also trying to say is that, I think 2GB of VRAM doesn't mean you can't run current or next gen games, you just need to turn down settings; e.g. AA or textures.

And to add my experiences with SLI, they have been generally smooth and trouble free if you are the type of gamer who turns on VSync. With VSync enabled motion and panning are usually glassy smooth but it does stutter here and there sporadically versus a single GPU solution (like when panning and the motion hitches suddenly) , plus with SLI you can add more AA or run higher res and multiple monitors with higher framerates.

But if you are a core gamer who values input latency and disables VSync when gaming, a single GPU might be a better fit = less input lag (from SLI and the VSync), less stutter/microstutter, but you will have to turn down that AA and some options (e.g. less monitors) to get it to run as high a framerate as it was running in SLI.

My current direction now: mITX with a single Titan, as kennah said, it's the new hawtness :)

He sold it to me for a high price!
Nah man the GTX 690 most definitely does not suck. It's horses for courses. Really depends how you game. I was totally fine with it until mkenyon came along and ruined the SLI party for me ;-]

Lucky. My splash's gonna have a 670 :p

Single GPU FTW ;-]
670 rocks too man!
When I first started on this whole PC direction I wanted the most powerful system possible, partly from the frustration of being held back in console gaming for nearly a decade, so I wanted 60 fps at 1080p with all settings maxed out.

But the more I've played with PCs, the more I realized it's about the fine art of balancing your settings to play the game the way you want to. For some like Smokey it's multi monitors at 1440p, for mkenyon it's 120Hz at 8.3ms frametimes, for Sethos (rest his banned soul) it's to downsample from 10K at 0.5 fps.

What I realized is that PC games are so scalable and that you'll find a way to enjoy your game with pretty much whatever rig or modern GPU you own.

Look at all those dumb functions keys taking up space :p
I played Infinite at 4k yesterday (3840x2400), Ultra everything, and my VRAM usage was at 3.7GB.

Highest I've ever seen for a game

Congrats on dealing with that.

Damn those cards are interesting but i dont have much financial backing and even then my mind would constantly mock me asking wtf am i doing.

Crysis 3

Have to remember that BF3 is almost 2 years old.
There are a lot of games that use more than 2GB, but it's dynamic. Never has a benchmark supported the theory that having higher RAM 670s/680s given better performance, even when that number is surpassed. Games are intelligent in how VRAM is streamed in, so when it's above that level the game is just stretching out and taking up more space.

Was just playing around with a really old computer of mine and my brother's old one, trying to figure out how to combine their components into one massively improved version. Well, turns out my computer had a 550W PSU - which I presume was way too much for the needs of a GT 8600 and Dual Core 2 E6750.

It looks like a really high quality PSU as well, as it has been running without a hitch for the last 6-7 years. Wish I had checked it out sooner as I could have used it maybe for my Node, but then it might not have had enough pins for the graphic card.

The new amalgation of old components was basically just the PSU and 2x1GB DDR2 RAM mashed into the brother's computer which had an equivalent AMD2 CPU. already 2x2GB DDR2 ram (bringing it up to a total of 6GB) and a HD 4750-something. Shame that old components become so expensive over time, so that's the extend of upgrades I could make without buying a new mobo.

So there's a $70 difference between a 2GB 670 and a 4GB 670. I was looking at the 2GB initially but now I'm not so sure. Is the 4GB absolutely the way to go?

A month ago I would have said yes, but now no, it's not absolutely the way to go. It's all down to the games you want to play and how you want to play them; e.g. Skyrim with tons, i mean tons, of mods, Rage with 16K textures, those you'll need 4GB, maybe future console ports too, but who knows. For now 2GB is sufficient, your 670 will most likely run out of breath before you run out of VRAM (in the case of AA application).

Undoubtedly the 4GB version now that we know the amount of RAM next-gen consoles are likely to have.

By the time next gen consoles are out you can upgrade to next gen cards, or you know, dial down those settings. I would be surprised if next gen console ports won't run on 2GB cards at all.

Next-gen consoles will be out in 7 months time. If you're in my situation, with two 2GB 670s, then it would make sense to wait for a while till a beastly card comes out that can dominate the consoles in terms of VRAM along with the obvious power advantage. If you're buying now, no point buying a card that may prove inadequate soon. Hell, Crysis 3 eat up 1.8GB VRAM, BF3 does 1.5GB and I imagine BF4 fully tricked out pulls more than 2GB (you won't be running it at 60fps on a 670, but 2GB will still prove insufficient).

PS4 might be out in 7 months, but the console ports may not be. Yes those are valid points to consider, but still 4GB is not absolutely the way to go. It's all down to personal preference and how you want to go about balancing your options.

Oh and Titans been out for a while now :p

I'm very disillusioned with modern cases. I can't think of a single person who needs 10 3.5" bays and several 5.25" bays yet every case seems to throw them in as if it is a feature they should be proud of.

Why I am liking the smaller form factor cases now, along with more higher quality motherboards in those small form factors. Was a time when I always loved multi card setups with water cooling, but after dealing with it for years I now prefer a single card and a good hsf for the cpu.

By the time next gen consoles are out you can upgrade to next gen cards, or you know, dial down those settings. I would be surprised if next gen console ports won't run on 2GB cards at all.

Why right now seems to be a really bad time to try any "future proofing", if there is ever a good time for it. Haswell right around the corner as well as the next console generation so the lowest common denominator for game makers is rising.
