I'm looking to finally get a new mouse and definitely want advice as to which to get. I have a Microsoft wheel mouse optical and these are the ones I'm looking at.

Anybody here move from a WMO to one of these and love it? Recommendations?

Is this... ehm... bad for haswell stock? Ran a three minutes small ftt test on prime95

I'm hesitant to overclock now.

Voltage seems higher than normal.

So guys, I just installed a 3TB Seagate HDD in my computer but why is it, that I can't format 746.52GB on the drive? I only have 2TB on it now.

Right click in the Disk 2 field (first column), should have an option like "convert to GPT" or something.

I'm putting together an Intel NUC as a way to play indie, retro/emu and older PC games on my big screen, and for simple streaming of video content. Which version of Windows should I get - 7 or 8?

Are there many older titles that won't run on 8? Is there a drawback at all to sticking with 7? I've barely used Win 8.

So my budget has most likely gone up from $200 to $300 for a computer that will mostly run 2D games for my thesis show that I programmed in Gamemaker...

is this a smart deal or does someone have something better for a similar or less price range?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1570545

side note: I've never built a computer entirely myself before, but I need to start somewhere.

the computer will then probably be my home working computer at some point as well.

Any chance of any news at the nvidia thing in 2 weeks?

How are nvidia card resale values? If I get a 780 classy now and 880 is kick ass later this year I should be able to get ok money for it still right?

I've seen used GTX 680 being sold for $250-280, so you're looking at a 40-50% loss depending on how much faster the 800 series is.

Hey guys, I have an ancient rig and was thinking about upgrading it a bit with some hand me down pieces from a friend and some new RAM. I was wondering what kind of performance I could expect from going A to B?

ASUS P5Q Pro Mobo
Q6600 2.4 Ghz
4 GB DDR2 400 Mhz
ATI 4870 HD

hmmm... had 2 random restarts in a row today while playing a game. kind of concerning, but it has been stable for the most part this past month. i think i remember one other time that it did this but it was due to an update... as far as i could tell nothing was updating

very odd

Why not wait till the end of GDC. DirectX 12 is going to be there along with Nvidia and AMD, doesn't hurt to wait.

I know you guys said to not care about my SSD usage, but I've been watching Samsung Magician, and over a day my "Total Bytes Written" went up .02 TB, 20GB. There is no way that I wrote that much in a day. Only big thing I did was install Microsoft office which is like 2gb. My used space hasnt changed by 20gb either.

All I do on this is browse the internet, play League of Legends, and shows and movies that I download onto a secondary internal harddrive. Any idea what could be causing the big increase?

Any help would be appreciated since this is semi time sensitive and would help me a ton.

On a side note do I need to install my own operating system as well? I'm new to this.

So, I read in another thread that the i5 2500K will be a good CPU for gaming for another two years or so? Is that really going to be the case?

What do you have now?

i5 2500K @ 3.3Ghz
ASUS P8P67
16 GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce GTX 760 4GB

I was going to move my system over to a sweet Fractal Node case. =P I guess I should OC my CPU. I've been afraid to all these years. I have bad luck. =/

I'll take a look at this.

There's nothing. Why is it greyed out?

EDIT:

I fixed it.

Hmm I noticed my PC has gotten more noisy since installing my Seagate 3TB hard drive. I guess I could replace it with another hard drive and lessen the noise? Is it because Seagate is not a good brand for HDD's?

Funny you should ask this. Haz and myself both wanted to keep Ivy in the OP as outside of emulation, there's no benefit to Haswell. Ivy gets PCI-E 3.0, lots of SATA 6GB ports, and plenty of USB 3.0 ports. There's cool stuff to be had when looking at the super low power i3s and the better on-die GPUs, but when looking at 3570k/3770k vs 4670k/4770k, I still think Ivy is a better option if you can get a discount.

Also, not to self plug too bad, but I have a Z77X-UP7 w/ mSATA SSD for sale I posted a page back. If you do end up going Ivy, it is a stupid good deal. It is the best Z77 board by a long shot.

Why do you feel that way, is it because Haswell performs similarly but doesn't overclock too well? Do you think the Haswell refresh/Haswell-E will change your opinion?

I know I'm not supposed to wait for parts (and I'll probably end up feeling burned when Skylake comes if I do wait too long) but right now I feel like I should see what the best processor is around the Maxwell refresh and move from there. Should I be buying RAM now though, is that only going to keep going up?

It doesn't look bad by any means. Given how low your budget is, I'd try to look for a used machine though.
An AMD APU like that is good bang-for-the-buck initially. You might want to consider an Intel CPU even if it has a much weaker integrated GPU, because it's stronger after upgrading to a discrete GPU, and also gives you the option to upgrade to a much stronger CPU on the same socket later. Even a weak GPU would likely suffice for developing those Gamemaker games.

Also consider that very low-end desktops and very low-end laptops are much closer in power to each other than high-end machines. If upgrading is not of interest to you, a laptop might not be out of the question.
On a side note do I need to install my own operating system as well? I'm new to this.
You need an operating system, yes. It can end up being a very large part of the cost of a low-end machine, unless you buy a prebuilt system that includes the OS. If you are a student, you may be able to get a very cheap or free copy of Windows; check Dreamspark and/or ask your school's IT department for instructions.

The Office 365/ 2013 installation is like 15GB IIRC.

Yeah, the original sandy bridge CPUs are still absolutely beasts, I count my switch to a 2600k still as one of my best upgrades ever. I am currently switching to a mITX case and needed to get a new mainboard. This tempted me to also upgrade my CPU (hell my SB is like 3 years old by now?). The I found a benchmark comparison of SB vs Haswell and was actually surprised to see that the CPU basically made no difference these days (1440p). Since there isn't much competition from AMD these days I don't see that I'll have to purchase a new CPU in the next years (as well as games seem mostly GPU dependant these days).

Upgrading the GPU is the best thing people can do these days, waiting for the Nvidia 8xx generation as well.

This is the build I bought last June based on the recommendations from all the great guys in this thread.

Now that the PC is almost completing his 1st birthday, I'd like to know if there's anything in particular I should do regarding his maintenance. I haven't opened and cleaned it yet but I'm planning on doing it soon and I wonder if there's a recommended equipment to do so.

Also, I've been playing TItanfall lately and I noticed that the games uses all the GPU ram and that reminded me of the discussions about the need of extra ram for nextgen games. I googled new cards and found a version of mine with 4GB. Should I try to sell mine and upgrade?

My rig doesnt have an SSD because I chose not to buy it at the time and wait for a price drop but it looks like the prices are still the same. Should I buy one now or keep waiting?

I wanna thank all the people that helped me achieve this build because I couldn't be happier with the PC so far.

I have almost the same build (4670k, Gigabyte 770 instead of ASUS, 750w), so I'll be following replies on this.

An SSD is very much worth it, especially with prices right now. The inside of my case doesn't get dusty at all - mainly due to the R4 filters. It's on the floor under my desk, too. Definitely worth getting in there with a can of compressed air though, and take a vacuum to the filters on the front and bottom.

And hey, cable management is always fun

Any recommendations for a wireless adapter. One I currently have stopped working. Looking on line seems like the USB ones are good enough, is an internal one worth it/better? They both seem pretty cheap. Thanks

I woke up today and my fans were going REALLY fast. Couldn't get click into my OS (Which is a Hackintosh btw)

This happened once before but I'm not sure what's happening. This happened after I installed a H60 and moved around the fans...

Should be ok if you are only running 2d games and maybe some older 3d games. It doesn't say it comes with the operating system so you will probably have to grab a copy of windows as well.

I've got an internal one in my gaming PC and it's pretty solid. I like the fact that the only external components are the antenna and there aren't any risks of damaging the adapter or USB port it's hooked up to (this has happened to me).

The only disadvantage of an internal card is the fact that the placement of the short PCI-E slot relative to long PCI-E slots may be a problem. Mine is directly under my GPU, so I have no idea what'll happen if I upgrade to a multifan GPU.

Budget: Willing to spend ~900-1000 dollars on Upgrades
Main Use: Gaming: 4, Gen Use: 5, Router/Switch emulation: 2
Monitor Resolution: 1080p, two acer monitors, only use one for gaming.
When will you build?: Once Dark Souls II comes out for PC
Will you be overclocking?: Yes, but I've never done it, would love some guidance!

Basically looking to make upgrades to my existing system not building a whole new one. I play a lot of steam games
and I tend play DotA 2 the most but Grab the AAA games as them come out BF4, Dark Souls, Etc.

SSD for the OS only? Apart from a faster boot, what would I get? I'm asking because I think the boot time is already really fast. I'll probably google a bit about the advantages.

For any data you use a lot. If your primary use case is playing games, then installing those games on SSD decimates load times.

You already have pretty much everything you need right now, but for sure, overclock that 2500K. It'll help with Dota2 and BF4 multiplayer. There are tons of guides all over the net.

Does your 560 Ti feel slow? Are you okay with turning down the settings on your games? I think that's the place to upgrade if you're gonna upgrade anything. Might wanna stick another SSD in there if the current one is getting full?

Other than the GPU, your current build looks fine.

That is a ridiculously stupid good price for that RAM. I don't need it but I'm thinking about buying it, haha.

Use the screws that you only have 9 of. On the back of the box of what the screws came in, there should be a picture of what came in there as well as how many. Use the ones that are labeled "M/B Screw".

Yeah, and if it's a small SSD you can swap games in and out onto the SSD - Used to have to do that when I got my first SSD at 80 Gb
