"I Need a New PC!" 2014 Part 1. 1080p and 60FPS is so last-gen and your 2500K is fine

First is 1380GBP/2260USD
Second is 1470GBP/2450USD

I don't want to build as I'm in Japan and worry about warranties and messing something up. Plus my hosue is carpeted and I know I'd end up destroying something during the build.

There's a decent amount of PC specialty shops in major cities (at least when I lived there) so I mean if you were that worried you could probably pay them to build it for a fee. They also generally have pre-builts with pretty good prices and parts if you look around.

Went into this week only looking to upgrade my card and I end up buying 2 r9 290's, a 256gb ssd and an LG 34um95, shit escalated quickly. Haven't gotten the monitor yet but I hope it knocks my socks off cause I already have a little bit of buyers remorse for overspending, lol.

(I'm also looking at a new mechanical keyboard and mouse, fuuuuuuuuuu...)

I'm looking to add an SSD to my setup. I'm currently using an Crucial M4 256 GB drive, and am wondering what the best value on the market is right now in terms of price vs performance/reliability. I'm looking at the Crucial M550 line, but are there any obviously better options? No Samsung, please.

Nothing obviously better except Samsung.

Don't buy Kingston. (recent shady business practices).

Can't go wrong with the 550 though.

Samsung would be the only option that could be better, but even that is a preference.

Performance is lower, but price is also so you can go for that Crucial M500, unless you are likely to notice the difference. Don't think there are really any other good alternatives.

Sadly I'm in the market for a new monitor now since my roommate knocked my PSU into it while I let him take a look. It's mostly fine but that scratch in the middle is unsightly so I'm going to look at low lag 1080p monitors now. RIP my money.
Well I tried all these and they don't seem to fix anything. I think it might be a bug with the mobo? Well I can boot from the BIOS anyways so I don't care too much.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I may end up going with the M500 as it's quite cheap on Amazon.

While the performance is not as good as the M550, it does appear to be superior to the M4 I currently have, so it will still be an upgrade. I'm pleased with the performance of the M4 and really just want more space.

Manufacturing 8 core CPU's at 22nm is not easy by any stretch of the imagination. There is so much that can go wrong in clean rooms, especially when dealing with technology that is so sensative. A single FM incident could cost them hundreds of chips that otherwise would have been perfectly good. They rigerously test everything, so anything that has 6/8 working cores is worth shipping out for some kind of revenue instead of tossing out.
I get that, but a vast majority of the Enthusiast chips that are sold have to be the bottom two SKUs, right?

In the case of the 5820K and 5930K, why would a person even consider the 5930K? With the 950/980, 3820/3930, and 4820/4930, there was a huge incentive to go for the $600 chip as they were 6 cores compared to 4.

I mean, it's all rumor at this point, so who knows, but if only a fraction of chips are able to be binned to have 8 working cores, then there has to be major issues going on.

SanDisk UltraPlus 256GB might be another one to consider.

On the other hand, for some applications I like nVidia's GTX 750ti just a tiny bit more since it gives similar performance to the 265 at half the power draw and about the same price point. The 750ti is, right now, the best performance per watt GPU available and is absolutely perfect for low power/low heat/Steam machine/HTPC duties. To be honest I'm surprised the 750ti hasnt gotten a lot more hype as its performance per watt is arguably borderline revolutionary. Anywho, both the 265 and 750ti are great GPUs and well worth the money.

No doubt. I think the low power use of the 750ti is pretty amazing. I think it does not get much recognition because the GPU market is so gamer dominated, and people building gaming desktops don't generally care very much about power usage. PCPer did a video of how the 750ti could be used to make any crappy OEM box into a lower-end gaming platform...it was pretty eye opening.

I still recommend the 265 to people looking for a $150 GPU....based strictly on price/performance...but I've beat that horse a bunch of times in this thread already.

Have firmly decided I want to upgrade my 670, about how long before the 6 Gb 780 Ti launches?

And is 200 for an EVGA 4GB SC 670 still the going asking price since the last time I inquired in this thread?

Hey, I have a question for the tech-minded....

What parts of the graphics card would take the "beating" in a mining scenario....

In other words, if someone got a R9 290 that was used as a mining card, would it be more likely that things like the fans, etc. are where it took a pounding...? Or the GPU itself, circuitry, etc....?

I mean, if you were planning on putting it under water anyway...would that change your thinking on whether to buy a cheap 290 used?

I have just bought a DVI > VGA adapter, and then I'll use the VGA cable up to monitor #2, just like I did with monitor #1. It'll be the same setup then, hopefully that fixes my problem with monitor #2 being too "bright" or not having as deep blacks even though it's the same model.

Moving parts always wear out faster.

Make sure the warranty is transferable always, when buying used.

The last piece of the puzzle has finally came in today.

How come the 8core is 3.0ghz?

That being said, if you are running single GPU and just need one 16x lane, one 8x lane, and a 4x lane (I assume that's how it's going to be split) then there really isnt any reason to go with the 5930k AFAIK.

There's more to PCI-E than just graphics cards, but yeah for most people it will be good enough. Depending on the price difference I would go for the 5930K just for the capability of having SATA Express and SLI with some room left for misc.

Ya I get that, especially with PCI-E SSD's and Thunderbolt add in cards. However I was just meaning for most gamers who only want a single GPU and don't need any aditional add-in cards with more than 4x or 8x lanes this will be more than fine for those needs.

Guys, is this R9 270 a good deal (Canadian dollars)? http://www.ncix.com/detail/club3d-radeon-r9-270-royalqueen-4a-94204-1069.htm I was going to wait a couple of months to start building my PC but I think this price is pretty good. Will this card and an i3 or i5 run most games on High for two years or so at 1080p? Or should I really wait for a 3gb card for more cash?

Good card, good brand.

As for running at high for two years at 1080p, no idea. It's a solid mid-range card but even now it won't be maxing out games at 60fps. All depends on what you mean by 'high' settings.

That card at that price is a steal though.

Since this gets posted just about every page, I wanted to make it known how confident I am in the 2500K/3570K/4670K.

If any of those processors has trouble with Watch Dogs, getting even 10% reduced performance compared to an i7 of the same series, I will give away a Matrix 7970 to someone on GAF.

Nice! A 7970 should help me reduce the price of my first built.
Thanks mkenyon!

Thanks for the response! Might have to pick it up. The free shipping is nice too.

I might keep good on my word, because of this one instance, but there's a few other sites with very different information. That website in general seems to have very wonky results that aren't in line with other people.

There's a few other benches that show like a 2% difference, this being the outlier. I'd like to see TechReport, Guru3D, or TechReport with some results. Or I can do proper frame latency stuff on my 4770K system at home if nothing else shows up in the next few days.

*edit*

They also have the procs at different frequencies, though I realize I did not not specifically state clock for clock. Might have me on this loophole damnit.

*edit 2*

For comparison's sake:

I'd say it's still undecided :p

Just putting this here from the May pick up thread...

Got bored whilst im on "holiday" from work. So I built a new PC for no real good reason.

Specs if your interested:

Intel i7 4790 (yes its not a K I don't care about overclocking)
16GB of ram running at some sort of speed, all I knew is that they had red heat spreaders.
SSD's for porn

and

Stock Nvidia Geforce GTX 780Ti so Watch_Dogs doesn't run like complete shit.

Looks nice!

Out of curiosity, why the Maximus motherboard and H110 if you can't overclock?

I have no idea really... it was black and red?! I don't even use the on board sound card which is a big selling point of the "Hero" Rog.

I use a H105 so I can reduce the fan RPM to the lowest they will go... shitty Corsair fans are still audible at extremely low RPM speeds though. :(
