YES/NO question.

I wouldn't trust my kids with a $200 device + games ($$). Especially if they'll get robbed by 19-27 year olds who would probably kick their teeth in to get their hands on one. I mean, folks are killed for Xbox.

also applicable if you're less than 15 on this forum : Do you think your mum/pop will buy you a PSP at that price point? I don't see it coming in at $149
 
Only if they make their kids trade in the DS they already got, otherwise i think no. Little Jimmy is gonna have a hard time convincing his parents to buy yet another (probably his third) handheld, especially an expensive one.

From working at a game store, I think most of the kids who can fanagle $150 plus game prices out of their parents can fanagle $200 plus game prices out of their parents.
 
Solution to all your problems: GET A DAMN JOB!... worked for me :D but then again I'm now 18 and have my PSP coming in the mail :P
 
Maybe, maybe not.

That's obviously not Sony's target audience, but I do see more and more younger kids with i-Pods which cost more than $200.

When PSP is $149.99, then that's a different story.

But Sony doesn't want to market to kids, they want it to be cool, and then kids end up wanting it even more because kids at that age (12-15 years old) want what the older kids are into.

That's why the PS2 is more popular even with younger kids/early teens than the GameCube.
 
I think people,old or young are gonna latch onto the PSP as they have the DS. Sony has proven time and again that they know what theyre doing. The public has shown that they trust the Sony brand,just look at the crazy PS2 launch for proof of that.

Anyways yeah-I think kids will want one,parents will more than likely look around and see the demand for the unit,and probably buy one for their kids. Its always the same. Massive hype for a hot ticketed item comes along,it rises in demand once its released,everyone wants one,kids want to be a part of that,parents respond.
 
This is such a fucking stupid question. I've heard it many times before, but I can't get over the sheer stupidity of it.

I, for one, am downright tired of the discrimination and prejudice inflicted on Junior Members. They are people, too. Dumb, ignorant, irritating people, BUT PEOPLE NONETHELESS. I will not have you all constantly insulting them and barring them from particular activities simply because they are 'different' from you. Here, in America, we have a constitution for a reason, and I believe we should all do our best to see that it is upheld.

I just don't know sometimes! Perhaps I feel too much. We live in a crazy world, with devastating inequality. Where human beings are identified as "Junior" members, and consequently ridiculed and treated harshly. Such distinct division, and for what? So the more privileged can be more comfortable? For laughs? At what cost must this happen??

The majority of kids who own the GBA at the 69 to 99 price tag have no hope of getting a PSP at 199.00, or the real price of 249.00 (case and memory stick).

Let the GA PSP Fanboys continue their delusion that the real world of handheld gaming is like them: willing to spend whatever it takes to play cut down versions of PS2 games.

The real question here is how badly will the failure of the PSP hurt Sony Corp. Once the hardcore handhelders have purchased it, no one else will. By next Christmas I see Sony pulling the PSP from the US market and retreating the Japan with the PSP.

Same goes for the DS. How much will the failure of the DS hurt Nintendo? The handheld biz is their meat and potatos, afterall. At $149, how can you expect people who bought the GBA for $69-99 to cope? They have no hope of getting the DS (and really, why would they want to?).
 
Really, it was a serious question. Not so much a pricepoint discussion but I think I worded my question wrong - its pretty clear that the PSP is targeted at 20+30+ crowd, can't find that japanese pie chart posted earlier; so I was just wondering if you guys thought that the younger set (which GBA/SP is sort of targeted at) will be likely candidates for PSP. Yes it is a techy device that I think adults will enjoy for:

a) multimedia (video + audio)
I must say the whole encoding element is rather technical and I doubt a child will get into it as much. Also, UMD discs have that slot where it can be scratched by uncaring children. The Mem sticks are also expensive and well. some parent is seriously going to freak when the kids lose these. Since parents control the purse strings - I wonder if PSP will become a Xmas hit as some are predicting. Handheld gaming is a very different beast from console. If Sony can mainstream handheld gaming with PSP, all the more power. I doubt the parental/girl market will pick up on PSP

b) games
nothing wrong with PSP games. They're great. RRacers looks great.

c)
that screen. Unlike DS + SP, its really going to be scratch hell (for kids)

Of course, rolleyes aside at a junior member thread - this discussion is partial to the whole PSP is going to kill Nintendo's handheld market. Is it? The other threads all are full of folks saying this but you have to wonder.. The market share is different and the number of kiddy titles on GBA points clearly in that direction; Majesco? sells their cruddy GBAvideo thingamajigs and they sell very very well. I am just wondering how much inroad into the child market the PSP will make.. in the opinion of members on this board. However I do realise that GAF is not the mainstream crowd... I mean MGS3 which is probably a hot fav sold like turd and we bemoan the fact. If a AAA+ PS2 gaming title crash and burned at retail, will mainstream america (parents/gamers) take to PSP? Sexy or not.

Also, seeing how PSP is a tech toy that everyone is saying.. great beauty.. and I have no doubt that when I get mine I will love it. My question stands. for a device that expensive, how likely do you think kids will be able to get/own a PSP? Its a market that SONY would want to tap (maybe/maybe not)... I mean I'm sure a lot of Gaffer won't even be able to afford a PSP at normal retail - gaming is a luxury and for a handheld... $149-$200 is a lot of cash going by the number of threads about college + expenses.

Oh well. I sure hope I don't see some snorty 13 year old with a PSP in a years time. And one more thing.. jobs aside, I'm sure you'll have other expenses to attend to then gaming. Like I said, its a luxury and unless you're hardcore and can live with the expenses, its not something many people will be willing to spend big bucks on. (Also, I don't foresee rentable PSP titles (like xbox/ps2/gc) in the future.

I am an extremely fast typer, yes. I can type beyond 75+wpm on good days.

What do I do? You mean for work? Heh. Well, usually I am a roofer. But it's winter now so there aren't many jobs in my area for that atm. I do something else too but it's personal and I'd rather not discuss it.

I'm sure he means $199 for the lone PSP, and then a $250 or something for the value pack. At this point I wouldn't be too surprised with a $150 lone PSP and a $200 value pack though.
 
At $199 and $149, Sony and Nintendo aren't targeting children. That will come late next year when prices drop (possibly later even for PSP).
 
I wouldn't make any assumptions about the final PSP price until SCEA announces it. Perhaps SCEA has a shocker in plan for NA as well?

At this point I think only $99 would be a real "shocker" (or conversly $299+). And if that happens...
 
I was thinking more along the lines of $149. Most people have been making the assumption the PSP will be $199 at NA launch. While this most likely will be the case, I wouldn't use any number as a basis for an argument until SCEA announces the official price in January.

Sure... I could see $149 too. Sony's going to have to cook the books as it is, what's another $50 per unit in the scheme of things. :)
