Is anybody here genuinely undecided about which next gen console they are going to get?

I'm too heavily invested into the playstation eco system and think sony have the better exclusives. If the series x is significantly more powerful and has much better multi platform versions i will have to think about getting one eventually. I would prefer to stick to one machine and at launch it will definitely be ps5, unless somehow microsoft bag some exclusives and steal away gran turismo, god of war, horizon, spiderman, the last of us, kojima productions etc etc

th

I genuinely think this, or a variation of it, would be a great design.
That makes one of us 😁

No, I don't worry too much about the specs and Sony has had a terrific track record on putting out the kinds of games I prefer to play ever since I was a small child. So I am going with them first. I'll pick up a Xbox Series X later on down the road as the generation shifts into full swing.

Easy choice. PC. Since PS4/Xbox era started almost every game is on PC and almost every exclusive game is meh at best.
I don't even plan to buy console to accompany PC which was my modus operandi for past 5 gens.

The title is clearly about consoles. Does it make you feel better by posting this here?

Has to be PS5 for me. The exclusives and 1st party studios are just better in my opinion. Also all my friends are PlayStation users.

I'm upgrading my gpu first before any of the consoles. Not sure between the 3080, 3080 ti or big navi radeon. Depending on pricing.

Consoles I'm heavily leaning towards the XsX since im already a gamepass ultimate subscriber and can't justify having two online services.

If XSX is significantly more powerful than PS5 I'll buy that and get the PS5 Pro in a few years. But I really doubt the 9TF PS5 rumor. They will probably be in par and so I'm probably going to go with PS5 because I've always been a PlayStation guy

Normally I would automatically lean towards the ps5... BUT... Sony is making worrying moves the recent year.

I describe it with pross and cons that would drive me towards a PS5 or against it.

PS5 pros.
  • Potentially stronger specs. It's still undecided but I think Sony will go with the stronger specs again. That's why they are delaying the announcement.
  • Variety in Library. Remember the X360? It theoretically was the better console, but with them failing to capture the Japanese market and their developers, most of their system sellers where shooters, where Sony had much more variety and innovation.
  • Backwards compatibility. I'm hearing a lot about this and I don't know what to believe anymore. If it turns out to be BWcompatible with ps1 and ps2 disks, I would also like them to abolish their region coding as Europe was left out of many big tittles back in those days.

PS5 Cons:
  • It looks like Sony is going on a censorship spree recently, with many Japanese games being covered or altered exclusively on the ps4. There is no buyers remorse bigger than finding out a game is censored, no mater how major or minor that is.
  • It looks like most of the big console owners are pushing digital only games very badly. If this turns out to be true, I'll jump to Nintendo or PC. The first because they still appear to give a damn about retail, and the 2nd because if I'm going to get a game digitally anyway, I might as well get it's best and most modifiable edition.
  • Sony looses Japan. As bizarre as it sounds, sony (who have already moved their leadership to the west) manages to loose the support of Japanese developers (by pissing them enough with their recent censorships or by having the whole industry there falling behind again) then I will no longer expect the variety they had, and I can only stomach so many buffed bald military dudes with politically correct content.

That's my two words on the matter.

Cant believe they will be having stronger specs than what was made public by MS for the XSEX.

MS bought a lot ot studios known for quirky games, though. Double Fine, Inxile, etc.
I think we will see a lot more stuff than Halo and Gears.

Might not get either for awhile. Been a long time since I didn't buy a console at launch, but I'm finding it hard to care about either of them yet.

True. The other consoles are poorer now that Double Fine and Ninja Theory will be making exclusives for the Xsex, but while quorky, they still make politically correct games. Only the Japanese are deranged enough to create the best Butt in gaming. And while this is a bad example as the game eventually made it's way to the Xbone, let's acknowledge thay they wouldn't had scouted it if it wasn't so unexpectedly successful.

Right now, PlayStation and Nintendo are the two main targes for Japanese developers to bring all their Japanese weirdness.
Which brings us to my other worry... Sony censoring Japanese games (and not wester ones). While most victims by this point have been small scale Otaku trash, we also had high profile victims like the new DMC5 game that, last time I've checked, my EU ps4 edition still has a bit more lenseflair than the rest.
Some Japanese developers are already fighting back Sony's policy by hiding their skimpier content behind gametime.
The whole thing is hilarious, but I can already smell the discontent.

PS5 at Launch, if they release two versions i get the most powerful.
The new Xbox 2-3 Years later with Gamepass.
Honestly i would even prefer the PS5 if it only has 8TF power, the exclusive games are just too good on playstation. Xbox had maybe 5 good exclusive games the whole generation.

Yes, I care about form-factor, size and design. Crossing my fingers that the PS5 looks better than that.

why do you care so much? I care more about a quiet console and a console that is reliability and doesnt get too hot. the design and size? who gives a shit, as long as the games look and run best on that platform.

cant believe people have a loud af jet engine console with shitty graphics than best quality graphics and a quiet console.

what so great and fantastic exclusive games can you play at launch? why would you get a PS5 at launch if there is nothing worthwhile out yet?

You should get a switch and not a PS5 tbh.

Probably not at Launch, but a year or two in i can see them releasing games like Horizion 2, Spiderman, God of War, some games from Japan Studio and smaller studios i forgot.

Xbox Series X. Power/BC/Gamepass. Plus majority of my buddies play on Xbox now again since 1X, including myself. Only way I'd move back to PS is if offered more power & my buddies moved over. We went to PS4 after the shit show of 2013, after being on 360 for so long.

Also, Switch Pro, hopefully.

Currently I have a One X, Pro, and of course a PC.

An Xbox would be redundant to me and a waste of money, just like it's been most of the current gen. PS5 is a maybe until we hear more, although I don't like how Playstation as a whole have become way too western, it's loosing a lot of its appeal to me. PC is where enjoyment of games hits its heights, and I'll be building a new one later this year to last me the whole gen like last time.

At this point in time I can only decide based on previous experience since we have no spec and price.

And experience tells me to buy a Playstation.

I'm seriously considering not getting any and just sticking to retro collecting and going through the backlog. Between the death of physical gaming and the prevalance of the GAAS approach i'm really starting to get turned off by modern gaming, even though theres still been some awesome games in the last few years. We've passed the point of no return when it comes to microtransactions, games being released half finished, constant patches, paying hundreds for shit you dont physically own etc etc, that is the norm now and theres no going back sadly.

Yes, that is a valid opinion but one I don't share. I want to play PS5 exclusives, not Switch games. I'm confident it will be good enough, whereas the Switch is very underpowered. And doesn't play Playstation games.

I want my hardware to look nice in my living room. Of course there's a limit for what I could accept, it's just higher than yours I guess. I want a balance between price, power, noise and design.

Simple as that.

I'll eventually get both. I'd probably start with the Xbox because of the GamePass value.
But right now, I don't see either as a must have (I'm sure that will change).
Unlike the previews of the Xbox One and PS4, these consoles look seriously over powered and will offer real benefits to gaming.
But, have you seen any game play footage that makes you say, "I have to get that!" ?
I have seen nothing apart from some Cyberpunk footage that could be Bullshot for all we know.
And the consoles are being released in this year.

That was my idea as well.
Gaming is becoming more and more unappealing. There is no point building a collection as parts of the game now are given digitally, and you can no longer trust a game's price. The biggest offenders are fighting games.

I began buying retro games for the ps1, until I've encountered a manmade obstacle... Region Coding! (And the high price of some rare ones I guess....)
If you live in Europe, the only viable way to make a collection is through Piracy. While I avoided it in the past, If they don't want our money, we won't force them on them, but they shouldn't complain ether if we make emulators to play what we couldn't. In addition with piracy you can install fan-made patches that fix, decensore and translate the games.

My only light of hope (which is the reason I'm thinking of getting it) is this talk about the PS4 being Very backwards compatible... I guess we'll see.

I'll definitely get PS5 as I get double digit exclusives every gen. Plus I've got all my online stuff invested there and with BC it's a no brainer. Now if Xbox shows 5 exclusive games that I would buy I would certainly consider getting a Series X. This gen they had one and that was sunset overdrive.

I would have thought by now most of us games are working consumers of video games. The console wars bullshit is akin to teenagers with only enough money to buy one console, so I understand why it once existed...but its continuity?

I already have my next gen fix. It's called a PC. I always ended up buying Sony consoles eventually,,,,but really with the PS4, I can't think of more than 2 or 3 games I would like to play. Funnily two of those games are now coming to PC.

can you tell me 5 confirmed and announced exclusive games for PS5?

Why are you so defensive against people choosing PS5? It's like the 3rd or 4th time in this topic.

PlayStation has had many exclusives in series and new IPs people enjoy over the last 2 generations, while Xbox still has Gears, Halo, and Forza. People are wanting something new and to be shown something new first of all. People are going by past years and are expecting something.

Is this hard to understand?

I have always loved Xbox. I had a PS4 for a little while but just hated it. I couldn't stand the controller. I hated having to change my grip in order to do anything with that dumb touchpad. And I didn't find the exclusives to be that remarkable. I ended up never using it. And paying for two online subscriptions seemed really dumb. Especially since I was spending all my time on the Xbox anyway.

I will without a doubt buy an XSX. I'm in the Xcloud beta right now and absolutely love just carrying my controller in my bag and playing games on my phone. I want more of that and I want to do it with my already existing library of xbox games.

I wasn't but am now. I changed stances about halfway through last year when I lost all interest in open world games. Now I want the fastest machine for multiplayer fps performance.

I'm sure I'll end up with both by the time all is said and done, but I don't know which I will bite on first. The exclusives almost always dictate that, and neither Hellblade 2 for XB and that "Gods" game for PS5 have me particularly hyped. Not yet at least.

Backwards compatibility is going to be a huge selling point for me as well. Space in my entertainment center is scarce and I'd love to be able to replace consoles rather than add to the collection; if I won't lose the ability to play previous gen games, that is.

Grew up on the psone and ps2. Bought the ps3 and 4 as an adult, never cared for the majority of microsofts exclusive series, so no, pretty easy choice for me.

That doesn't mean they can't change it with cool new ips they come up with next gen, but gotta see them first.

I am. I only care about third party games so both systems will have them. It will boil down to cheapest and most consumer friendly.

Honestly I feel like MS is taking so many consumer friendly paths I will absolutely get one eventually.. I will get neither right away as I'm content with my PC but the Xbox will be the first one I get, though with every generation once the price is right after a few years I tend to get them all.

The only thing that gets me is that MS isn't making Xbox Series X exclusive games for the system for 1 year. Sure, we'll be able to download
100gigs of "series x" game enhancements for let's say Forza Horizons 5 but it just rubs me the wrong way
.

IMHO, when you're in this type of next gen "arms race" where teraflops and ray tracing is being thrown around like grenades, you better
have the exclusive games at launch to make customers sit up and say "wow I gotta have that!". There will be a lot of *asterisks on the packaging
of the Series X explaining additional downloads for game enhancements.

Good thread.
I'm getting a PS5 regardless, the exclusive games have earned that faith from me. I do hope that PS4 games automatically Spider-Man get load time fixes when played on PS5 (I'm looking at YOU, Division 1 and 2).

My XB1X has sat largely collecting dust. So much power for almost nothing interesting in the XB1 library. all that power to play my 360 games without needing to plug in another system. GamePass and Backwards Compatability fit nicely hand in hand together, I think neither would be as good without the other beefing it up. If XBSX can bring it with the xbsx games then MS should have a fighter on their hands. But then again I expect Sony to retool PSNow/Remote Play into something more robust to combat this, like how we can now download some of the games on it. They've already said something about shared gameplay sections that sounds like Shareplay 2.0, so they've got some things cooking.

Right now XSX the fact that were getting BC out the game plus a new Halo and Forza games has me way more excited then the rumored games sony has. Dont care about a Demon souls remake played the game when it came out to death there almost nothing they could do to the game outside of the frame rate without tarnishing the atmosphere and GT7 is no where to be seen and after playing GT sport for tripple digit hours ill hold off on GT7.

Until sony values it jp devs/branch ill pick up a ps5 when ever Persona 6 or FF16 drops most of sonys current western exclusives do nothing for me and there not the reason why I buy a playstation to begin with and with sonys censorship policies im very hesitant to buy anything from them in the future.

So you feel bad because i said PC will be my choice instead of saying i don't plan to buy any console ?

I've been playing a lot of older games from the backlog lately, so BC is going to be a huge deciding factor for me. I'm waiting to see what Sony is doing, but if it's just PS4 BC, I'm going to be leaning heavily towards Xbox.

Of course, it must be said that I thought Sony's 1st party output was extremely disappointing this gen. People have been singing praises for God of War, Uncharted 4, Horizon, etc, but I was disappointed with all of them because they focused more on visuals and narrative than having fun game mechanics.

I primarily use a switch but might pick up a Xbox series X, using switch for exclusives and XSX for third party/some first party. In Australia my phone company has the monthly deal with Xbox + game pass ultimate at the moment, so might use that to catch up on a lot of games this gen that didn't go to the switch. Also I hope to see mine craft with ray tracing and the new flight simulator with high specs, my PC is a potato.

I currently own all 3 base systems.

most of my digital library is on PS4.

with that said it's about the new games.
Backward compatibility is of some importance but I'm not getting rid of my PS4 right away and rumors are neither is going to have next gen software.

I loved Halo however I'm currently into Soulsborne's. I also love Bethesda RPG's and they've traditionally been lackluster on Sony's hardware with either poor performance or not fully supporting mods.

so yeah, for me there are several factors to consider when deciding which one to get and I'm most definitely undecided.
