Yes . . . tribalism is the word I should have used. But that said, it is drawn along various lines that can be ethic, religious, sectarian, etc. . . . Sunni/Shia split, Kurd ethnic split, various Sunni interpretations split, etc.

Intolerance and the cynical abuse of fear of the other by people in power to remain in power is the basic drive that explains this shit.

It's why Saudi Arabia sent in tanks to roll over Bahraini protestors (claiming 'terrorism' as a bullshit excuse) while turning around and lauding ACTUAL AL-QAEDA AFFILIATED FIGHTERS as 'freedom fighters' in Syria and pumping them full of money. It's completely transparent.

There's many workarounds for this. Some have suggested license fees, tag fees, sales fees on vehicles, tolls and so forth.

I'm willing to bet the general population is more willing to repeat the last decade to forestall that reality. This may just be the cynic in me though.

The gas tax itself is a problem right now . . . we have not raised it since 1993 and that means the gas tax has been effectively dropping for decades due to inflation. The Federal highway fund is pretty much bankrupt.

It turns out middle class and poor people need to drive to and for work and to meet family/personal needs. I'm not surprised no politician is suicidal enough to touch that particular third rail.

Yeah we only get trivial amounts from that region. However, if the oil stopped flowing from there then prices would skyrocket everywhere since it is a global fungible commodity.

And you know, that might actually be a good thing albeit painful. We are too addicted to an expensive dirty climate harming substance from volatile parts of the world.

(Avatar quote)

And your good solution to no oil, and I'm going to assume also coal, is what? Wind power...can only be used in certain locations. Solar...decent for an additional source of power, but too unreliable for a primary. Shale gas comes from fracking, I don't think I have to explain farther. Nuclear... okay, do you mind the plant in your neighborhood? Because they have to go somewhere, so I hope you don't mind the possibility of your property value cratering. Also, what are we to do with the tons of nuclear waste produced by plant operation? Where do we store it for the next thousand years? We already have 65,000 tons sitting in temporary storage yards with no place for them to go.

You have to be realistic.

There's no way they'd be able to get Spain, much less a good chunk of Russia.

Seriously, just the Russian thing would lead to some hardcore stomping of them.

Nah. Framed correctly it would work just fine. Giving people some relative cost certainty vs. largely fluctuating gas costs would be a first step.

You would have to be quite gullible to believe any of those 'plans' are nothing more than fantasy.

I believe it's just a rough map of the height of the Islamic empires. It's them expressing their desire to return back to their Golden Age.

This is quite disturbing

It's nice to want things.

My favorite part is the inclusion of Austria because they felt the need to go one step farther than Islam has gone before. Shocked they didnt include southern France as well for good measure.

Puitin with Obamas approval would probably use nukes before anything like that ever happens. Good luck though. :)

He wouldn't need approval. Moreover why would he need approval to defend his country from an independent third party?

This is all disregarding the fact that the conventional Russian military would wipe the floor with ISIL, sorry "the Islamic State".

Yes, pure fantasy on their part.

Nice wank material for Hizb ut Tahir folks that like to re establish the caliphate. But I highly doubt nuclear armed states like Israel, Pakistan and India will simply roll over.

That's hilarious.

The western response if ISIS even set foot into Europe would be so swift and severe the battle would be over before it began.

Well Turkey is a part of NATO so they wouldn't even get that far. They're already encroaching on Turkish soil from the looks of it so let's see if they want to poke the bear.

Yeah, good luck with that, ISIS. No quicker way to get yourself blasted off the face of the Earth than to claim the control of giant swaths of Europe, Russia and the Middle East as your goal. As cocky as they are, they wouldn't dare attempt an invasion of Russia, Turkey, or half the other countries on that map.

This actually does relate to WWI, as the borders they're seeking to erase (such as the one between Syria and Iraq) are Anglo-French borders established in the aftermath of the war.

trouble is that this is not a movement driven by needs of independence or nationality / ethnicity. It appears to be a largely cultist-fundamentalist type of thing where the only group that will survive the "reordering" of things happens to be one of admitted faith rather than a "legit" form of equality by ethnicity.

It's not how history so far suggests that one can build viable nation-states. Not that I am in any way pleased with how "nations" are a strictly European invention that was artificially forced on the world, and mostly through genocide as well (Native Americans, Aboriginals, Saharan people, etc, etc, etc), but if the local population is going to live in relative safety, they would need a state that they can trust not to kill them when it feels like it.
That "map" clearly suggests otherwise if you happen to live in Africa.

And it's also not something to think is funny, since it's quite literally a "Lebensraum" kind of map.

The person who made this, doesn't know geography or Arabic. Who writes names without the definite article? The borders and place names are laughable.
Why the hell is half the Hijaz taken by Syria and the rest merged with Najd and Oman???

I just don't understand these groups. Do they just enjoy being in a state of constant warfare against everything and everyone?

You should empathy, that people believe well not beleve they're convinced that if they kill unfaithful people, and for unfaithful they understand everyone who is incredulous about their religion, they will reach and get the Eden with 72 virgin girl for their pleasure.

Obviously there are all kinds of circumstances which give rise to regional/national tension but I also believe it has to do with population bulges (i.e. youth bulges). I forgot the name of the article but it succinctly expressed the view that population bulges in history usually equate to severe conflict.

Yeah . . . the mid-East is filled with frustrated unemployed young men. And they don't seem to release tensions with drinking, watching the world cup, chasing women, etc. . . . I think that tension finds an outlet in jihad.
