It seems impossible to compete with Nanite and Lumen, it seems like in-house engines will become a rarity

Different methods, similar pragmatic appearance. Remember when we were promised incredible reflections because... "raytracing". But in reality all has to be scaled down and nanite wont be different.
I'd rather have reflections that don't disappear when stuff is off screen rather than pixel perfect reflections that break down so easily.

Remember when most major games where made with Unreal Engine 2 - 2.5 - 3?
And then suddenly everyone wanted to make their own engine full of day 1 major bugs ;-)
 
Wish I could just time travel to the day games regularly look like this. I'm 40 now, so by what, 46-47 I'll be able to play full games like this I imagine? Not enough time.
