jk, great job! You make it sound easy, but I know it must've taken a lot of discipline

Did something similar for a month but plan to make it a lifestyle change. The key is eliminating simple carboyhydrates from your diet which tend to keep your insulin levels high., leptin resistance, etc. etc. No added sugar and nothing processed.

That food pyramid doesn't exist anymore because it was wrong.

You really don't need carbs at all.

My entire biochemistry faculty would disagree with the thought that your body doesn't need any carbs at all. What a bizarre statement. Several connective tissue diseases occur because of a deficiency in carbs, and the brain absolutely needs carbs.

Low carb is great for losing weight but no-carb or long-term low-carb diet, like any unbalanced diet, can have problematic long-term consequences.

Keto @ 25-35 carbs a day (or moderately Low carb, 50-75 carbs a day) + Starting Strength Routine + Only Drink Water = Almost immediately feel, look, and think better.

I've been doing it since I got my new job and I'm on a regular schedule. Lost 10lbs since I started on August 1st. 30 more to go and I expect to get there before year end.

I've done pretty well without working out as well, went from about 230 to 205 in about 7 weeks.

I use to eat insanity, 2 biscuits and gravies from Carls Jr in the morning, Grilled onion bacon cheeseburger with fries and Dr Pepper for lunch, and Pizza hut for dinner.

Now its more like Healthy cereal and a banana for breakfast, grilled chicken and rice for lunch, baked fish for dinner.

I'll have a cheat meal twice a week.

Isn't Starting Strength designed for gaining weight? I thought it recommends 3000 - 6000 calories a day.

It definitely still exists..

I love the irony in Americans telling you don't need carbs at all, when Europeans carb load all day every day and are much thinner and healthier.

The no carb diet is not sustainable and not healthy long term. It should only be used if you are interested in losing weight short term (pre beach season, etc) or too lazy to exercise

Europeans don't stay healthy because they eat a lot of carbs, correlation does not equal causation. Unless you're willing to provide like a study backed by health experts that proves otherwise.

Everytime I ask italians why they eat so many carbs and stay healthy they say is because of food portions and the lifestyle.

They may eat a lot of carbs, but many also walk fairly regularly to many places, accompany it with healthy stuff in their dishes, and eat WAY smaller portions than a hungry american would.

Cheap sources of carbs, especially with the advent of agriculture and grains, is what allowed humanity to flourish too. No longer having to eat meat or hunt, people could grow acres and acres of wheat, make pasta, breads, noodles, things like naans, could feed a family, a village etc.

It's not just carbs that are bad either. Japanese diets are full of starchy carbs, and yet they're some of the longest living and leanest people in the world.

Something has happened since the 70's though. People are eating more than ever. I also found going no carb, zero carb, low carb helped me shred the fat and lose weight. Naturally I wanted to eat less, wasn't as addicted to overeating or eating.

Yes, the diet routine part of it probably is.

I don't use it for that. I use it as my exercise/weight lifting routine. Low carb is actually an enemy of making gains for purposes of weightlifting. But it depends on what the goal is. My goal is to lose weight, and Starting Strength helps facilitate a better look and being stronger while losing that weight. It works phenomenally well for my purposes, but keto definitely wouldn't work for someone who is trying to break personal records, become bigger, and maximize gains. A Cyclical Ketogenetic Diet (CKD) would probably be their way if they're cutting carbs.

I don't see why you can't weight train to lose weight, especially since SS is a well rounded and simple split. All strength programs are built for gaining weight.

He's talking about recompositioning, it's when you loss fat and gain muscle at the same time.

It's very doable for newbies and it can be done at a modest deficit.

I lost 12 in the last 4 days. Though that's due to not eating on top of being violently nauseous.

Low carb is so damn boring. Moderation to stay sane.

If you can keep it up it's good way to lose weight. However, if you just started cutting out carbs/low carbs. Majority of that weight is really water. Low carbs + drinking a lot of water will flush out the excess water in your system. That's why fad diet work so well. People the just shed off in the beginning without realizing it's not really all fat.

I stopped drinking diet soda and switched to just water. My appetite went down significantly. Lost about 12 pounds in three weeks.

Not sure I follow you,
but actually let me tell you what happens next (with my body at least)

I'm 5'8 btw

at 167lb my face gets round (lol) (time to start the diet again)
@157lb my face get back some cheek bones becomes more defined :)
(I am not sure I would call that water weight)

but after I loose 10 pounds the next month I will only loose 3 pounds,
by October If I continue the diet I will be 150, you see it's starts to get harder and harder,
but the good thing I stop feeling heavy- thus easily being able to bike/run/parkour whatever again.

This diet is can only get you so far ,after you loose all that excess you will then be ready for exercise (unless you do both which is obviously the best thing)

French people eat bread with every meal and almost every meal will include rice, pasta, etc.

The difference, however, is that their meals also include a lot of water, vegetables, lean meats, fruits, etc. And then they don't follow that up by sitting in place for 6 hrs at a time..

I'll get you started
The most important simple carbohydrates to limit in your diet include:

Soda
Candy
Artificial syrups
Sugar
White rice, white bread, and white pasta
Pastries and desserts

While you can cut them out if you choose to do so, there is nothing wrong with white rice, white bread, or white pasta.

I can't cut white rice. It's a staple.
Also sparkling water is great to have. 1 part juice to 50,000 parts sparkling water works pretty well for me. I find most juices intolerably sweet, but diluting them with sparkling water is a win-win.

Too much water will cause you to be bloated. So when you lose the water, your face will be thinner. Basically what I'm saying is that a lot the initial weight loss is water. What's your goal exactly though? Just to lose the weight or fat? Without exercise and weight lifting. If you lose 15lbs, it's going to come from your muscles too.

Feels like every diet advice I get veers towards "just become a vegan" makes sense though, considering you never really seen an overweight vegan, heh. One trick I've learned is to ween yourself off of foods with healthier alternatives.

Instead of icecream, go low fat yogurt. Mix some real fruits in there for good measure.
Instead of fried, go baked for meats.
Rather than donuts, cookies, or cake, eat a muffin.

I eat whole wheat bread and rice, yet they're considered bad for weight loss. I mean, how else do you get your grains and protein? These have to be eaten in moderation to be effective.

Started a low sodium/no caffine diet for blood pressure purposes, kicking the coffee habit entirely. I've steered away from drinking soda and juice months ago and just focus on water, a little milk (cherrios), and sparkling flavored waters if I need a little taste.

Meats I've reduced to strictly fish, chicken, lean turkey, and pork as long as I trim all the fats and bake them. I can have a little lean ground beef to mix in with rice and veggies.

Potatoes are something I don't eat often, but should have to find other alternatives. At least I still have my eggs, love me some eggs. No bacon or sausage, but sometimes a cheese omelet with some avocado for breakfast hits the spot, or sunny side up egg on whole wheat toast.

Fruits I have to refrigerate otherwise they go bad. Blueberries, kiwi, strawberries, melons, and bananas. I have to avoid citrusy fruits. Apples for some reason, make me gag... even washing them the skin makes me feel sick when I bite into one so I'd have to peel them myself.

Would be careful with the Tuna. Super high concentrations of mercury in it. If its an almost daily thing you are getting way too much mercury

It is well known that weight loss is mostly diet.. that hour long run can be easily negated by two cans of soda.

I've lost about 15 lbs within a couple months mainly through portion control and greatly reducing my soda consumption. Most restaurants and fast food places in the US serve oversized portions in which I was compelled to finish. I began losing weight after making the choice to eat only up until I was no longer hungry instead of eating until I was full. I also try to choose the whole grain option when available as you end up getting hungry again rather quickly with "dry carbs". It hasn't been too difficult as I still eat mostly the same things and just take sips of soda when I have a craving.

Congrats OP!

Life without pasta and rice though, isn't life to me.

All someone has to do if they want to continue to eat their favorite foods is have smaller portions.

Sure sure easier said than done.

Good job. I didn't go so extreme, but did do a keto (extremely low carb) diet combined with regular exercise, and have lost 20 kg / 44 pounds since the start of the year.

Keto worked wonders, and unless you're going insanely crazy extreme you're still eating delicious, complex meals full of delicious stuff rather than being reduced to nothingness. Can be hard at first as you basically need to outright cut out specific things that I love (eg: bread, pasta, sugared anything, etc). But, you know, I'm still eating crazy scrambled eggs and omelettes, steaks, cheese sauces, this fantastic spicy cheese and jalapeno soup, roasts, fish, etc. The other week I made these tuna balls (like patties) stuffed with avocado, parmasan, and spices, rolled in coconut flour and fried. Toasted eggplant and pickles with salad and feta topping. But yeah, just gotta keep at it, keep consistent.

Working out is an ineffective way to lose weight anyway. You burn only a small fraction of the calories in a gym session that your body burns throughout the day on its own.

But it is important for cardiovascular health and/or maintaining muscle mass. The two make an excellent combo towards changing your life for the better. Diets are nice but its important to find a sustainable balance, and that is different for each person.

I've lost 5 in the last week and a half. I've not eaten as much as I used to and I barely started working out this weekend.

I don't think we're disagreeing at this point lol.

See when you can get creative and put in the effort, the diet works wonders. For somebody like me who doesn't really cook outside of basics to survive, the diet is a death sentence to quickly hating microwavable meats, eggs and hard cheeses. Which is all I ate. I now can't eat solid parmessian cheese without growing nauseous.

To be fair though I always reach a plateau around 190 lbs when I do a keto diet. I'm still near there and want to go lower in fat content, so right now I'm just calorie counting and doing exercise.

I lost 25 pounds in the last month and a half doing pretty much the same thing but eating more vegetables, mainly cauliflower. Except on Sundays I get to eat what I want so I don't go absolutely crazy.

I've lost about 15 pounds in the last month by simply counting calories. No exorcise. I try to avoid fats and sugar but I allow them in small doses.

I've been extremely diligent about recording my calories and it seems to be working. Here's hoping I continue to loose more and that the first 15 isn't just water weight.

PAULINK

I microwave steaks.
I'm looking to diet as soon as I hit next semester, thankfully I won't be bound to the school's meal system so I'll be on my own for the diet part. Shouldn't be too hard to control what I buy.

You cut out carbs, which is the fastest way to lose water weight. But without regular exercise, you won't change your body composition and you'll find losing more weight upon the initial weight loss to be nigh-impossible.

That food pyramid doesn't exist anymore because it was wrong.

You really don't need carbs at all.

Not unless you enjoy headaches and absolutely bruuuuuutal farts.

Same here - lost about 10 pounds over a week by regulating diet. Be mindful though, the initial drop is always going to be the biggest. Don't become complacent or think that you can up your caloric intake just because you're losing weight at a certain rate, and definitely try to exercise.

I ate 350g of chocolate over the weekend and carbs for breakfast and lunch and did not gain any weight. Dinner was meat and 3 veg both nights.

It was like that for me at first because my regular (and shitty) diet was so carb heavy the notion of not eating pastas and breads and sugared shit left me in a "what do" situation, and my early meals (outside of breakfast, because that's easy) were total shit.

But yeah. If you've got the time and patience you can start whipping up great low car meals. Salmon on vegetables with a creamy herb sauce. Cheese, bacon, and jaelapeno soup. Spiced chicken on a zoodle capsicum fry. Grilled eggplant. Parmasan avocado tuna balls. Pinenuts. Blue cheese scrambled eggs.

I mean, I was breaking the rules quite often by not outright cutting even the slightest sugared/carby ingredient, but for me it was all about moderation and watching just how much your daily intake is. Tomatos aren't exactly low carb, but fuck it, I'll use them and just be diligent.

even if you're going low carb, you should at least have about 50-100 g of carb from low GI foods (potato/oatmeal etc) each day just so you won't pass out from hypoglycemia.
