If you need a broad and simple takeaway from this study, here is one: weight loss does not rely on certain carb levels or manipulation of insulin, it relies on eating less. Don’t be scared that eating carbs will cause insulin to trap fat inside your fat cells.

I've been losing weight steadily the past couple months. I've hit a plateau. Having difficulties finding food that are filling, but not too heavy on calories. I find myself getting hungry in the middle of the afternoon so when I get home from work I tend to overeat

i started working out and eating better last october. but you can very clearly tell when i started taking nutrition seriously:

losing weight, and keeping it off, is like 75% eating right and 25% exercising.

but don't underestimate the importance of working out. it's what builds lean muscle and keeps your body from using your existing muscle for energy.

Gaf, what's the easiest way to lose belly fat?

there's no way to lose fat from a specific area(outside of surgery of course but come on don't do that it'll just come back). but it starts coming off your face, arms and torso before your legs. leg fat is the hardest to lose because of the way its deposited.

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
How would you rate that method on a scale from 1 to DMC3?
Also, do you end up looking like a JRPG character?

Congrats on the weight loss! :)

it's mostly true. assuming your diet is horrible. you're only going to burn maaaaabye 1000 calories working out for an hour. you can blow that away with a snack at mcdonalds.

it's obviously better to eat shitty food and workout than to just eat shitty food and play dota all day but to actually lose weight you need a healthy diet.

It's not just carbs that are bad either. Japanese diets are full of starchy carbs, and yet they're some of the longest living and leanest people in the world.

Fat shaming
Small portions
Lots of walking

So basically you eliminated everything that tastes good.

Buttered steak
Blackened salmon
Full fat ranch dressing
Bacon
Keto peanut butter cups
Eggs anyway you like them
Guacamole
Dark chocolate
etc

Only in the US will people tell you that exercise is an ineffective method to lose weight and that you should instead be cutting more carbs.. ???

There are tons of people who run 3 miles a day and never lose any weight because the moment they're done exercising they plow through half a carton of ice cream.

Weight loss is 70% diet and 30% exercise. Everyone agrees.

While I agree diet is key, I literally don't know anyone who would put the effort into a 3 mile run every single day that then goes on to stuff their face with junk food.

yep, yep.

also just cutting carbs isn't good. most people eat way too much of everything. you need a well balanced diet with healthy ingredients and appropriate portions.

the average american's diet is an abomination

edit:

omg people stop being pedantic. the point is you need to do both.

DO BOTH, GAF. EAT HEALTHY AND GET SWOLE, GODDAMNIT.

Meal portions, activity and quality of food are killing this country imho, at least for people in a similar situation to myself where eating healthy cooked foods isn't that much of an option so we limit ourselves to low calories.

When I go to visit South America, I always come back weighing less because I eat less, I eat more healthy, and we walk around everywhere. In fact next time I need to lose a few extra pounds, I'm going there for a month haha.

lol you'd be surprised.

<---- just got done with my workout! Wendy's is on the way home...

don't do that anymore though.

My entire biochemistry faculty would disagree with the thought that your body doesn't need any carbs at all. What a bizarre statement. Several connective tissue diseases occur because of a deficiency in carbs, and the brain absolutely needs carbs.

Low carb is great for losing weight but no-carb or long-term low-carb diet, like any unbalanced diet, can have problematic long-term consequences.

Your body synthesizes the sugars it needs. As long as you consume enough carbon molecules via consumed fats and proteins, your body takes care of the rest.

Considering the majority of people I hang out with and associate with are fitness minded, I guess I would be surprised? I mean, outside of powerlifting (the sport where the morbidly obese excel) I don't see anyone workout to just eat junk.

Part of the reason low carb works is due to lowered hunger pangs. I could easily eat 2500-3000 calories a day and still feel hungry on a med to high carb diet. I struggle to eat more than 1500 calories on a keto diet since I don't get pangs, and sometimes don't get hungry at all in the evenings for dinner (though I force myself to eat at least 1500cal per day to prevent muscle atrophy)

Not exactly. Not consuming any sugars at all will cause lethargy and headaches. Your body just can't synthesize sugar fast enough if there's literally no sugar in your bloodstreams.

Ok but can we keep general health and well being into account here? I'm willing to bet the person who runs 3 miles a day and eats a Carton of Ben and Jerry's every night will have higher functioning brain, healthier organs, and be physically stronger/healthier albeit less aesthetically pleasing than someone who is losing weight by doing nothing all day and eating a low calorie, low carb diet. If the only thing that matters to you is weight loss, I hear purging what you eat or abusing laxatives are very effective, arguably more effective than exercise? I don't know how we've come to this..

I'm confused.

Which one should I do? Eat healthy or get swole?

Surely having a moderated diet of healthy foods and increased activity isn't the magic bullet.

Lost 6 kg in the past month simply by eating salad at lunch.
I'm not really overweight,my only issue is that I can't stop eating if my plate is not empty.
By reeducating my stomach eating less I went back to my ideal weight. The most difficult part is to control my wife not cooking/serving too much.

O yeah that's the definitely fastest way to losing weight. I lost 10 pounds in a single week by just fasting every other day. I can't recommend enough.

Jokes aside. Everybody has his/her own priorities. Since we're in a topic that addresses weightloss, we're simply discussing the myriad ways to lose weight. Some good, some not so good. If we're talking about having a healthy lifestyle, that's a different conversation.

Sushi from Kroger?

*vomit*

Eh, what's wrong with Kroger deli? Publix does the same thing though they're regional. It's the same seafood they keep in their meat/produce department. They have to keep it pretty fresh.

Mall sushi on the other hand ... yeah, that's gross.

I have been in a more strict diet and I work out for an hour a day. I lost plenty of weight, but the fat I lost is basically from parts of my body that I am not really concerned about. My belly is not budging at all. I have lost an inch around my waist. Can anyone give me any tips to tackle that?

Waist is the hardest to lose because it has the highest concentration of fat. Can't do much about it until you start eating super clean and does plenty of cardio. No easy tricks aside from hard work, patience, and perseverance.

nothing wrong with kroger sushi. There simply are better options, but sushi snobs need to let you know how they know better sushi.

I've lost about 25lbs by just eating less of what I like. I just eat what I like but less of it.

I started lifting and doing 15-25 minute cardio sessions this February and ended up losing 16lbs.

I don't believe in those high stress diets. Strictly avoiding certain foods will lead to you failing the diet later on.

Sure, you can diet, but a diet is only going to go so far without exercise.

Then your biochemistry department is full of fucking idiots. Dietary carbs are not a necessary nutrient - it's in the RDA handbook. If you're not ingesting dietary carbs, your body can easily create enough carbs through gluconeogenesis.

Whether low-carb/ketogenic are optimal is another story, but many diabetics do especially well on them.

lol what? It's very common and not surprising for some people to think that after a good workout they deserve a "little" reward.

Water weight can fluctuate up or down ~10lbs, scales are EXTREMELY deceptive. Get yourself a measuring tape to measure yourself. It's the most honest way of tracking fat loss or muscle gains.

I went without carbs for a week. Never again. My farts were weapon grade.

Going low car is nonsense. I believe there are quite a few studies out there that demonstrate that carbohydrate rich diets resulted in weight loss and overall better health. The quality of the carbohydrate is in question. If it's natural then it's a winner. It's the processing of foods that tends to strip carbohydrates of their many benefits. Stay away from that.
