Everyone please, if you are really seriously about packing on some mass or losing some fat, stop using the scales as your main form of measurement! Measuring (with a measuring tape) your neck, biceps, forearms, chest, shoulders, waist, butt, quads, and calves once a month is a great way to truly track progress. ✌️

Well that depends. It seems that some people are responders and non-responders to exercise. Genetics plays a big factor here. I think 20% are on the low end, the other 20% are on the high end [responders] and everyone else is somewhere in the middle.

HIIT and fasting seem to work well despite genetics.

I've gradually lost 75 pounds over the course of two years (230 to 155) and still feel like I have too much belly fat. Well, for someone who weighs 155, I guess. Shit sucks.

After a month your like meh to that stuff. I honestly didn't know how addicted I was to that stuff until I wasn't anymore

I can cosign this. Soda in particular. I can drink it every now and then but too much of it just makes me feel horrible. Juice is so much better.

Going low car is nonsense. I believe there are quite a few studies out there that demonstrate that carbohydrate rich diets resulted in weight loss and overall better health. The quality of the carbohydrate is in question. If it's natural then it's a winner. It's the processing of foods that tends to strip carbohydrates of their many benefits. Stay away from that.

I agree with this, I love carbs such as fresh breads, rice, fruits and home made pastas and I eat an over abundance of them and yet I'm down 263 to 177 in a little over a year. I learned moderation, it was an amazing discovery to me to see how much I was actually eating compared to the recommended serving size of things.

Beans are super filling and low calorie.
Had a diet of mostly beans (all sorts), and I ate pretty much the same amount (as other foods previously), but I lost a lot of weight.

diet + exercise
there's no way to lose fat from a specific area(outside of surgery of course but come on don't do that it'll just come back). but it starts coming off your face, arms and torso before your legs. leg fat is the hardest to lose because of the way its deposited.
Be a professional athlete.
its the last thing to go man

unfortunately :(

Dammit...thanks guys for the advice. Worked out for a bit 2 years ago and stopped and all those muscles went straight to my belly. :*

What is so funny? On its own, an increase in exercise will have a very small impact on weight loss. You will never burn enough calories in the gym to overcome a poor diet and many people that go into the gym dont understand this and eat back many of the calories they do burn.

As I said, it is an important part of any real lifestyle change if you want to make permanent growth and become a healthier person overall. But too many people think that going to the gym is the key to losing weight. It is not.

lol what? It's very common and not surprising for some people to think that after a good workout they deserve a "little" reward.

Those usually aren't the people running 3 miles every day. That's almost 100 miles a month. That's a lot of fucking running.

Not exactly. Not consuming any sugars at all will cause lethargy and headaches. Your body just can't synthesize sugar fast enough if there's literally no sugar in your bloodstreams.

Not true in any way as the millions of people on a ketogenic diet prove. Once your bodies glycogen stores are depleted and there isn't enough new glucose/carbs in the diet, the body switches to using ketones as an energy source for cells, converted from stored fat deposits. The body can easily synthesize the glucose it needs for brain function from digested foods.

I've been on Keto for about 1 year, more for diabetes type 2 issues than weight loss. I went from having T2 diabetes and looking at needing to take daily medication for the rest of my life, to being functionally cured of diabetes with ketosis. As a bonus I lost 40 lbs and feel much better, and just don't crave or eat junk food at all anymore - and I'm a guy who used to easily down an entire pizza and a full quart of ice cream as a "meal".

On a day to day basis I will eat 0g of sugar and maybe 5-15g of carbs, mostly from dairy or green veggies. I've gone a couple of weeks sometimes with 0g of carbs (all fat/protein) and had no discernable differences in my mental or physical state, there are actually some 0g carb proponents although I like veggies too much to abandon them.

Not saying keto is the one true path, in fact a study released last week showed a low fat diet actually had better results than a low carb diet, which I think makes sense. I've just found a low carb diet lets me easily control cravings, whereas carbs tend to throw me into a Hulk-esque "MUST EAT MORE" frenzy.

Yeah if youre not eating properly, hitting the weights is not gonna give you the results you seek. Nail your diet first, then focus on the exercise.

Whenever I drop to less than 30 carbs I start getting headaches quite constantly. I guess if I went long enough like that it could change but the longest I tried it was for 6 weeks and headaches didn't go away and I just said fuck this.

Nowadays I just count protein and calories. Works this way the easiest for me.

DietRob

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I'm down 30lbs from the holidays last year.

It's all about eating in planned moderation for me. I used to have snacks by my side all the time. I cut that out planned when and what I was going to eat and when I was going to eat it. I've stuck to that and I'm back down to my young adult weight.

I'm down 20 pounds in a month from 2 mcdonalds double cheeseburgers a day + small snack (<100 cal) at home
I took 3 out of the 4 buns off to make it low carb (20 total), total amounts went under 25 a day usually unless I ate a popsicle or a marshmallow that day

Wasn't even hungry after ketosis kicked in while on a <1000cal diet, I have to go out of my way to make sure I meet micronutrient requirements

It's not well balanced eating and it needs to change but it shows anything can work if you keep those macros in check

Inb4 starvation mode nonsense

Screw no carb diets. Despite eating Pizza, Pasta and Potatoes in the last weeks I managed to lose around 6 weeks by staying under 1500 calories limit with some occasional running and walking.

I need my Pizza in my life ;-;

I lost 10lbs over the last 3mos. I have really bad TMJ and am having a hard time eating hard food. Sucks.

Anyways, I lost 80lbs last year- (deliberately. I got diabetes. Now I'm down to 190lbs, diabetes under control, no more meds).

I go sub 100g of carbs 5-6 days a week while having one cheat night with all the good carb heavy foods we love. Combine this with very frequent lifting of heavy weight and you get a satisfying dietary life while maintaining a aesthetically pleasing body.

There are tons of people who run 3 miles a day and never lose any weight because the moment they're done exercising they plow through half a carton of ice cream.

Weight loss is 70% diet and 30% exercise. Everyone agrees.

...how common is someone who is able to run 3 miles a day and have that much ice cream on tap...come on now...theres some 800calorie breakfast sandwich action going on in there.

I've had the same issue with carbs. When I lost a lot of weight I was actually 'Carb Cycling'. Basically eating carbs on lift days and low carbs on off days. Completely cutting carbs requires a trmendous dedication to the lifestyle. My own diet journey has me viewing carbs as a tool to utilize when needed versus it being my enemy.

I think a lot of people don't realize how slow true weight lose from fat stores takes. 2lbs a week is cited as a safe rate of weight loss. One should do the math and see how long it'll take to reach their ideal weight. It takes patience and a commitment to the lifestyle.

Then your biochemistry department is full of fucking idiots. Dietary carbs are not a necessary nutrient - it's in the RDA handbook. If you're not ingesting dietary carbs, your body can easily create enough carbs through gluconeogenesis.

Whether low-carb/ketogenic are optimal is another story, but many diabetics do especially well on them.

Saying the body doesn't need any carbs is different than saying you don't need to eat carbs. I realize now that's probably where a misunderstanding lies.

Anyway, as you said, whether it's optimal is different, and I learned in my biochemistry class that the average person's healthy diet should have approximately 20% of their diet consist of different carbs (whole grains and dietary fibers are also carbohydrates), which is low, but not devoid. Of course the body can make its own carbohydrates, but it does so because the brain and other organs need it. I'm not so sure living in a state where the body is constantly having to do that because it is almost devoid of carbs from the diet in long-term is optimal, though.

I lost 6kg last year simply by cutting out soft drink cold turkey for 2 months.

Went from 76kg to 70kg just like that.

A can of soda alone is around 170cal? That alone can bump you from weight loss to maintenance, and, if you're in maintenance, from there to weight gain. It's def' a good cut to make at first. Soda withdrawal is a bitch though.

Everyone, should pay attention to this guy, cold cut Turkey slices have tons of sodium which will prevent you from loosing weight and its bad for your heart.

I have gone from 14st to 12st 10lbs in 4 weeks.

I havn't cut out soda's or anything! I downloaded the myfitnesspal app, put in the information required and it gave me a set amount of calories to eat per day, stuck to eating that or less and the weight has so far just dropped off me.

Also any excersise you do throughout the day, even just walking, can be added back on and the calories burned used to eat again.

You can scan the foods or manually input them so it keeps track of the calories eaten and amount left for the day.

Brilliant app if I may add.

Last year I gave up beer and lost 20lbs in a month. It was the only alteration to my diet and exercise. I was surprised how effective it was.

I lost like 20 pounds on this diet:

Breakfast: Soylent (667 Calories), Soy Latte (120 Calories)

Lunch: Soylent (667 Calories)

Dinner: Whatever I feel like. Sometimes a snack, sometimes (vegan) pizza (??? Calories)

Weekend: Whatever I want

I didnt need to lose weight that badly but I was starting accumulate mass at a worrying pace. I contribute the weight loss to the Soylent as I previously ate lots of Thai food and soda for lunch and microwave oatmeal that was loaded with sugar for brrakfast. I think the key is balance. It's okay to have days where you indulge yourself, but that should be balanced out by a diet with a variety of foods. Ideally lots of fruits and veggies and less processed foods. I've maintained a healthy weight for the past 6 months and I still drik soda and eat junk food, just not all the time. Generally I shoot for 2000 calories a day. It's not worth my time to count calories but some days I'm over and some days I'm under, it evens out in the end.

Anyways, Soylent is great. I mix it with 100% dark cocoa (hersheys special dark) and cinammon which improves the taste tremendously without adding calories. I save time and money and I feel much better than I did previously.

Good on your weight loss, I'd probably have pigged myself every evening after having Soylent all day. There's definitely more pleasant ways to cut calories, especially considering you still were at 1500kcal before dinner.

Bad. The thing is, ill just "have one can" with some take out, which leads to like 2 or 3 cans. Fuck.

Lost 28lb's since 27-6 till now and still dropping. I'm 6.6 (1.98m) and I bodybuild/fitness.

I'm currently at 226lb and trying to drop down to 209lb ripped. Used to be obese as fk (308)

Ofcourse lifting like a maniac (4 days) and doing alot of cardio (almost every day) works alot but the way I eat is pretty solid and a cheat day here and there (summer BBQ's etc).

Breakfast : oats/skim milk/walnuts/banana and protein powder

lunch : rice(any kind)/ 8.5oz of chicken or any kind of low fat meat / veggies

pre workout : same as lunch

dinner : same as lunch but more fatty and less carbs

pre bed : 500grams of cottage cheese.

Dedication.. its all in dedication and no bullshit excuses.

OP how much did you weigh before? Could be just water weight you lost. If you're going to put that much effort to cut carbs you can probably find a few min a day to work out instead. Watch out for hair loss on your low carb diet; any drastic changes to your diet can have an effect on your scalp.

A good deal of it is water, especially since he's on a low carb diet. You can't low carb without losing some water first.

You cut out carbs, which is the fastest way to lose water weight. But without regular exercise, you won't change your body composition and you'll find losing more weight upon the initial weight loss to be nigh-impossible.

I agree with this post. All of it.

Although congrats OP, now keep it off

The thing about Keto -- once you reach the ketogenic phase, you don't want ever want to leave. And the fact you can eat so-called "forbidden foods" (creams, fatty meats, certain cheeses) makes all that more attractive.

I lost 30 pounds in 6 months and kept the majority of my strength gains and eat tons of bread, rice, pasta, etc.

Intermittent fasting?

Lucky you.

where i live its just rice, rice, rice and more rice. (and curry)...

its just not possible to have a healthy diet here.

.

That doesn't make exercise ineffective. If you keep your diet exactly the same but start/increase exercise, you will lose weight and get in better shape.

This.

Now for newbies like me that are trying to get to a place where Cooter is (go to the weight lifting thread), I recommend getting to your goal weight and then introducing that cheat day. I am doing 7 days of carb deficits (50-75 a day) with starting strength involved. Once I get my lifts and weight to where I want them (or close), I will take it to 6 days of low carb and one cheat night

Guaranteed results while not being miserable because of your diet. And you'll be able to maintain it.
