The conclusion that Microsoft would no longer design their own consoles, according to Fryer at least, came from the fact that Microsoft teamed up with Rog to put out a handheld. this is one of issue that i notice the differences between Xbox vs Playstation or Nintendo.

for Playstation and Nintendo, their fans is mostly about games, product or characters.

while Xbox fans on other hand, some of them is fans of the branding. heck some of them is brand of their bussiness model or approach. throw some buzz word and they in. sometimes i wonder, are they fans of videogames or fans of bussiness? what worse, some of them are fans of the higher up profile in the divisions management. those people get treated like some celebrity. the way they behave on social media also like they are the one responsible in managing the brand image lol. its like they has some life stake in it. despite they just basically customers.

I was an Xbox fan, back in 7th gen, because I liked the look of the console, the green power buttons, the dashboards, logo, controller comfort, the green box cases, focus on online MP, Xbox live, the multiplats running better than the PS3. It ws just the gaming brand to me...all that has been eroded now. I don't even know what Xbox is anymore lol. They ditched everything that made them cool. Sony is still Sony, Nintendo is still nintendo. The gamers in MS left, and the corporate, microsoft office types rolled in. It's dead now.

The press release specifically mentions a first party console while also mentioning partner devices.
The first party console logically is the machine they produce themselves, the partner machines are like the ROG Ally X.

Seems unlikely that they'd put a console out to soothe fans. If it didn't make business sense to do it, they wouldn't be doing it. If they really wanted to soften the blow as you put it, they'd keep some key franchises exclusive, give additional content to Xbox players, etc. but they presumably don't think it makes business sense to do so, so they aren't doing that.
