Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

As it seems like this is the place where new Wii U owners have gathered, perhaps I can ask my own question here.

I'm planning on purchasing the Wii U Premium Pack that comes with New Super Mario Bros. U + Super Luigi U, but I have one concern: are the Remote and the Nunchuk required for any Wii U games at all? I don't care about Wii backwards compatibility, and so I was hoping to avoid having to deal with motion controls and simply get a couple of Wii U Pro Controllers for local multiplayer instead.

Most games use the gamepad if you're playing solo and more are adding pro controller support. For multiplayer it wouldn't hurt to have at least 1 wiimote+nunchuk

does the Wii U requires a subscription like PS+ or Live to play online?
NO. Online gaming is free

Forgot to mention it in the first post, but I have it enabled in there. It was on by default I think and I've never changed it since. Just checked it again and it's still set to "on." I also noticed it specifically says it'll use the light for notifications, which I'm assuming means the little ads or notices that occasionally pop up in the home menu's notification screen, which I've gotten several of and have never had the LED turn on for. Weird.

For me it only lights up when friends are online. I think that's all. Not for news and not for miiverse posts. Just when someone from my list is online.

I hate motion controllers. I'm planning to also play Wii games on it but only if it doesn't force me to play with the Wii mote T_T I hate it

Wii U is backward compatible. That means that you can play Wii games.
Of course, with Wii controllers.
Wii games are intended to be played with the remote/nunchak setup (not all, but tons of them)

I want to play Zelda and Mario, those are going to be my first games. Where can I see the list of games that supports the pro controller?
That Mario bundle looks sweet. Another question, does the Wii U requires a subscription like PS+ or Live to play online?

Wii U Gamepad in any case is a very classic controller, in terms of pure inputs, compared to the remote motion sensor. I think that it offers everything a normal controller has to offer, plus some additional info/input (with the screen)

Online is free

Something is really bugging me about the tablet controller:

The right stick makes a "crinkling" sound when I move it around. Almost like it's getting caught on plastic inside the case as I push it around.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does it go away after use?

Got my Wii U a few days ago, absolutely loving the system, W101 is now my game of the year. Btw madcatz has the tekken tag 2 arcade stick half off right now for $75, all sanwa parts. Might bite on that, just concerned with future fighting game support.

Welcome every new member, it is an exciting console with so much potential:
Everyone focuses so much on graphics, I guess they are important but I look forward to the gamepad uses like:
-more asymmetric gameplay
-RTS/Simulation/Manager games
-tactical use of the gamepad in a MP FPS, similar to what Ghost Recon Online showed
-some use of the gamepad none saw it coming

Not much time to play :(.

Still playing to finish SM3DW, LoZ WW HD, Zombi U and some games I want to 100% like AC 3 and Lego City. Black Ops 2 is my go to game for MP next to CSGO on PC. MP FPS is a missed opportunity on the Wii U, I would love for someone to take a risk for a simple but fun, well implemented FPS, could be free to play or $15 for simple MP. Would love a CS type of game and a fast paced arena shooter.

I have a lot of games on my to-get list:
W101/Pikmin3, not sure which one first
NFSMWU/Batman AC physical copies are very cheap, would love some e-shop sales
Deus Ex HR
Rayman Legends
AC 4
Splinter Cell

Some nice highlights since I joined at launch:
-Off TV play: I know it has been said multiple times, it is great although not all games are worth playing in Off TV. I would suggest NSMBU/NSLU, CoD BOs 2, Trine 2 and AC3. Because of this feature I could play more quick rounds of CoD BOs 2 and finish sooner games that would take longer for me. Like I said the gamepad is not for every game as playing SM3DW on the gamepad does not do the game justice, I would check this feature on a game by game basis.
-Lego City Undercover: I played Lego games before, but this one had an original story and characters coupled with a well written and funny dialogue. It is very long and the game is packed with content, so much hours of pure fun.
-AC3 without HUD on the TV: very simple thing but it really helps with how the game looks and for immersion.
-LoZ WW HD: a lot of screens in the Screenshots thread show how pretty the game is, playing it yourself feels even better
-SM3DW: amazing graphics, tight gameplay, so much little details, the music. The complete package.

I'd be very concerned unless Smash supports it and you prefer that setup. Otherwise not a good investment.
Naw, I modded a stick to use for melee, I don't recommend a stick for smash, only fighting game I don't use a stick for. Besides, I guess I don't need another one lol. Smash and Bayo can't come quick enough.

My two sticks (L/R) look and feel the same. I have to say i don't have the problem you have. Your right stick should be identical to your left, so if that one doesn't have the problem... I'd contact Nintendo or the store where you bought it... see if replacing ONLY the pad is an option, so you don't have to get your account swapped and need to send in the entire package. You could still play some other games with the pro controller, while you're waiting for repair or a replacement pad. If you need to send in your entire system, i have no idea how long you'd have to miss it.

Look what arrived in the mail today...

dscf4616swzg6.jpg

It was one of those 2000 Wii-U consoles sold on Ebay for $249. I am shocked at how fast it arrived considering it was free shipping... Ordered Sunday night / Monday morning (12am) and arrived Tuesday, lol.

Very excited. None of the games I ordered during Black Friday are here yet, though.

Wow! That's crazy fast!!! It's like one day shipping since they most likely didn't ship it until Monday.

play-asia.com sells them.

Might be a dumb question but does the Japan Battery pack work in the US Console?

I heard that the Zelda bundle may of came with the larger battery. Anyone know if there is any truth to that?

How long is the normal battery pack suppose to last?

Yes.

False.

Mine is lasting around four hours with Lego City.

haha, I know! xD I was expecting it to be here Thursday which I already thought was fast enough, lol.

Download yourself some EarthBound or Super Metroid while you wait perhaps? You got that Off TV play and they look and run gloriously on the Pad.

Oh I didn't even think about replaying some older games! Is A Link to the Past on Wii-U VC and lets you off-TV play?

Just wanted to reiterate just how much I love this little system. It's like, despite all the connectivity, all the online features that we expect, there's just something special about local co-operative play in Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3 that Nintendo has been doing so well at.

If you have a Wii U, play it with a friend or friends. If you don't have friends, make some and play these games with them. You deserve to experience this joy having bought the system. Everybody should experience this timeless laughing and fun.

Unfortunatley no, but both NES Zeldas are on there. Any game that is on Wii U VC is able to be played using Off TV.

That said you can always get A Link To The Past from Wii Shop Channel and play it Off-TV using a Wii classic controller. If you can wait ALTTP is one of the most likely games to be added to the service in near future.

Gitta say. Assassins creed 4 on wiiu is a damn fine version. The map is actually useful on the gamepad, the game runs beautifully and the off tv function really works well too.

Super Metroid is on there.

I feel like a lot of people are buying the Wii U now...it's nice.

My wish for eShop sales:

1. Splinter Cell: Blacklist (I'd love it at $19.99, but I'd probably bite at $29.99)
2. Deus Ex: DC (same as above)

Here's hopin'.

Same, plus I have 2 $5 codes waiting to be used. Also NFSMWU and Batman AC.

That $250 price point.

When that becomes the longterm bundle price, WiiU sales will flourish.

My wii u is coming tommorrow. I got the mario and luigi bundle for 250 with no tax.

Hold me.

I just set up my system this morning (it's for my 5year old boy) so it can be ready for Christmas morning. The whole update process took like 60 min total, and it was very smooth. Now, the system and controller itself really, really impressed me. Especially the controller, it feels great in my hands, and the graphics themselves look great in HD (mind you, I just played Super Mario Bros U). I can see myself playing quite a lot with the system (I got my kid Disney Infinity and Super Mario 3D World, plus Nintendoland). Now, if the OS was a tad bit faster it would be great, but it's not THAT slow....

Good game choices. I bet your boy will love them.

That $250 price point.

That's what happens the media hammers it into you that the thing is basically a 360 that plays Nintendo games. It's maddening how many people eat this BS up like cookie dough.

Does Nintendo use an account system now for online purchases or are they going to be tied to the Wii U?

ALl purchases are tied to your Nintendo Network ID. CURRENTLY, that NNID is tied to your console and can only be untied by calling customer service. This is a work-in-progress issue though. It won't stay like this forever. They're already making moves in the right direction but it's a slow process. No need for "I will lose my games!" paranoia. They know what you bought.

I think it would be pretty funny if Nintendo just leaked bundles to sellers on eBay, 2000 units at a time, told them to price them at $250 and clear the stock.

Just do that once a week or so for awhile and gradually get to that magic $249 price point permanently.

They do use an account system but those accounts are tied to Wii U's. Unlike what D-e-f- says I don't think they will ever allow you to switch freely between accounts on different consoles (at least not in the near future).

Wow, the Nintendo doom threads are all over the place.

As a Wii U owner myself I tend to defend the Wii U as I find it to be a great console and worth the buy. I also own a PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360. Xbox One in a year or so...

My 7 year old daughter is having a blast with the Wii U playing Mario 3D world. Pikmin 3 is still a bit too much for her to handle. Wind Waker HD, Nintendo Land.. stuff like this she enjoys very much and plays all the time. She would pick the Wii U's gamepad over a regular controller any time of the day. I like it as well for games like AC3, Zombie U, NSMBU, etc.. The gamepad gives you an extra dimension that no other console offers. Except maybe PS4 with Vita.

That said, Nintendo for the last 30 years had been a profitable company except for maybe 1 year I believe. They will be fine no matter how many of these doom and gloom articles come out. Nintendo will be around until our kids have kids and longer.

The thing I love about Nintendo is they don't like the status quo, they innovate and gamble on those ideas. Sometime its a success (Wii) and sometimes not (Wii U). But they don't give up, they keep innovating and do what they can to change the game. If there were no Nintendo, gaming would be a stale and boring place for a lot of us.
That's all.

Good game choices. I bet your boy will love them.

I can't wait for my son to cross the threshold where he's able to play games properly. I think I'll let him play a game on the VC to break him in. Mario 2 or 3 should do the trick as a good starter, yeah?

He loves Zelda, but it would just overwhelm him.

Damn dude! My tracking order still says Friday! LoL

I think modern Mario games (like recently 3D World) are better starting points. That's my opinion. For multiple reasons but in general NES Marios are more merciless.

I really like my Wii U even though I play other systems more. If you don't have the USB to Ethernet adapter you can expect the update to take some time on WiFi. Also, do yourself a favor and get Mario 3D!

Guys, I need your help! I own a Wii U since day 1 but I still need your advice for my Christmas shopping. I'll get Super Mario 3D World and one more game. But which one? I'm interested in:

- Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (considered ACIII to be widely boring, but hey... I like pirates!)
- Rayman Legends (didn't play Origin, was never a big fan of Rayman)
- Splinter Cell
- Deus Ex

Rayman, Splinter Cell and Deus Ex might be available for a low price point. Is anyone aware of good deals going on right now (Germany or UK)?

I already own The Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, etc.
