Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Well, I've had nothing but problems with my Wii U so far.

First of all, I was downloading Wonderful 101 and it stopped halfway through and told me the data was corrupt. It was taking up about 11 gigs, and it wouldn't let me erase the corrupt data no matter what I tried.

So, I called Nintendo, and they told me I had to format my Wii U. I told them I had about 10 hours progress on Mario World 3D, so they told me to copy that onto the 1TB external drive I had attached and I would be able to copy it back after formatting the Wii U. Went ahead and did that, and guess what? That's right! Once you format the Wii U, you're not allowed to read any previously formatted HDDs!

Thanks Nintendo for you absolute shit save game management and DRM. There is actually no way to get a save game off of a digital game at all. It's completely locked to the console.

So, after the debacle of the Nintendo-sanctioned deletion of my 10 hours of Mario progress, I tried to download W101 again. Again I got a corrupt data that I couldn't erase. I went full-bore into Google this time, not daring to call Nintendo. It turns out that the external HDD I was using was probably underpowered because it was powered through USB. I disconnected the drive and tried to download W101 again. This time it went without a hitch.

So, not only did Nintendo stupidly tell me to "back up" my Mario game onto a hard drive that the Wii U was specifically designed not to recognize after a format, they didn't even ask me if the hard drive I was using was USB powered!

With my WiiU finally stable, I transferred all my Wii licenses to the console.

Ok, so all that is behind me, right? Wrong.

The right stick on my WiiU Gamepad started not recognizing being pushed to the right. I nervously call them up again and explain the problem. They want me to send the entire system into Nintendo so they can assess the problem. I then explain to them that I have save data on the console, to which they responded that they would "most likely" not format the Wii U, but they can't be certain.

I demanded to talk to a manager, and finally got him to allow me to just get the game pad replaced. He then told me to mail the Game Pad in and they would fix it, and it would take 6-8 weeks. I then asked him if he could just send me a replacement game pad, and then I could send them the broken one. He said that wasn't possible. He then suggested I go to Best Buy and exchange just the game pad, seeing how I've only had the console for 10 days and there is a 30 day exchange policy.

Today I go into Best Buy, and they of course refuse to exchange just the controller for a new one. They insist I bring the whole system back. I try to explain that all of my save data and Wii licenses are now tied to this console, and I can't remove them so I just need the controller. I explain that all they need to do is open a Wii U box, give me the controller, then put the broken controller in the box and ship it back to Nintendo as defective. They tell me that "the Wii U and Controller are tied together with a serial number" so they can't just give me a controller from another box or they will be charged full price for the entire unit.

Then they explain to me that if I had purchased the Geek Squad warranty, I would be able to go to the Geek Squad desk and they would replace the controller without the system. I then ask "Wait, so if I didn't buy the warranty you can't open a Wii U box and give me a controller, but if I did, you can?". Basically, total bullshit.

So here I am having to send the controller back to Nintendo and wait a month and a half to two months to get it fixed, and all my save data gone.

I've approached the final Operation on Wonderful 101. The game delivers satisfaction from learning to play on a level close to the Souls games. Easy GOTY material right here for me. The game is simply astounding and has made me a new fan and firm believer in Kamiya and all things Platinum.

I played the demo. I need this game.

it never asked me that.

Click on your profile then go into settings. You can set up your NNID whenever you want. If you can get into the eshop on your Wii U, someone has already setup an NNID on that Wii U. It won't let you into the store without doing it. And for what it's worth, when you create your user, the first option it gives you is to setup an NNID.

Damn FLyinJ...

Man, all that from a digital download.

Precisely one of the reasons why I refuse to purchase games digitally. I need my hard copies and there isnt even that much space on the U hard drive to begin with.

You can't ignore the sexiness of the discs either. What the fuck did they do to make them so smooth and round? Every disc I've handled EVER has been sharp as a fucking knife

Yeah that was one of the first things that really knocked me back, those buttery smooth edges. That and the fact that the system eats them up with you barely even pushing the disc.

That sucks man. Not knowing to use an external drive with a dedicated power source is your fault (they tell you in multiple places in the manual and online that this is what you should do), but everything else sounds like you've been given bad advice after bad advice.

There are rumors that the disc smoothness is part of the system's security. I don't know if it was ever expanded on beyond that though.

Sorry Flyin...

On the bright side you are the exception and just got unlucky with your system. When you get it back your problems will be alleviated.

I guess I'll try that when its finished updating. Took me little over 1hour and a half, not that bad considering my connection speed though it helps that no one else was on my network using up bandwidth. :P

I played the demo. I need this game.

Unusual and yet pretty damn cool that the demo sold you, when the majority of people on here said the demo was a big "I have no idea what Im doing" fiasco and wasnt at all a good indication of how the game really is. I really hope you pick it up dude. More people really, really need to experience it.

They just dont make games like this anymore, unless this is just the way Platinum rolls. And if this is how they roll, then I am 101% on board.

Even with disc-based games, there is no way to get the save off the console. It is tied completely to it and it alone.

I don't think I've ever read a console manual in my 30+ years of gaming. I had no idea that you couldn't use certain USB powered external drives.

And apparently Nintendo support doesn't even know it.

those discs feel soo damn good i sat there just inspecting the edge xD.

Thats why I think its smarter to release demos after the game is released.

Dat smooth disc feel.

Everything you have experienced so far is nothing compared to what lies ahead. I'm not kidding.

Well, that sucks and i hope it gets sorted out...but this thread is all warm and cozy and you totally killed the mood :(

Here's that pic again to make up for it.

IT'S HERE!

That's what my friend keeps telling me and that's what I've been reading on here for months. Hopefully I will finish it tonight. Im already super psyched to jump back in again afterwards. Ive replayed the first couple levels just to grind for space veggies and that alone was like a whole new experience since by then I knew what I was doing and had a bevy of morphs and custom blocks.

It's like for the first few missions I was dreading each skirmish since they themselves felt like boss battles, and I would revel in the downtime where you can rescue civs, explore and collect goodies.

Now, I revel in the actual fights and look forward to them each and every time with a huge amount of confidence. The game is just simply something else.

Something tells me that you're gonna be sooo happy that you did this for her, because of how much you will be loving Mario 3D World your fiance. ;p

You'll both have a blast!

Don't get me wrong, this purchase is for me just as much as her. She likes the lego games so I'll probably get the Marvel lego game and Lego City. I think they are pretty fun.

It's such a great feeling by the time you get toward the end of the game and realise "Hey, I'm actually really good at this now!" If the toolset is relevant and balanced, and the game has done a good job of teaching you, your play style becomes completely different and massively more effective compared to your first awkward baby steps.

It's the surest sign of a great game, imo, and W101 embraces this philosophy in earnest.

Picking up the NSMBWU Bundle after work today. I'm going to do a Wii to Wii U system transfer as soon as possible, about how long does that take? And are there any tips or warnings about that process to note before I do it?

How is the WiiU port of AssCreed IV? I'm not bothered by the fact that it won't be getting any DLC (I've never purchased AssCreed DLC in the past) at all so it's just any potential performance issues or glitches I'm curious about.

I hope you have a couple of other controllers (wiimote, pro controller...), so you can still play many games. You don't need the gamepad per se for most games. It can only ease the pain somewhat i guess.

About the HDD... i do have to say, had you done some reading beforehand (there is a neogaf topic specifically about Wii U HDD compatibility), or had you asked here, you would've known, that you best used a USB Y cable for USB powered 2.5" HDDs, to get enough power from the USB connection.

I heard it was pretty good, actually.

The Wii U version of ACIV is good. Good performance, great views and you can move all the HUD to the gamepad, so perfect playing condition. 720p with stable framerate, just some drops in the city, but nothing unplayable. Ubisoft nailed this port so there is great hope for a good Watch Dogs version too.

Why am I not hearing Xmas music on the Wii U eshop?

It's funny, because a couple of months ago, the music changed in the e-shop. But two weeks ago i bought a second hand Wii U (basic) as a present for a buddy. I did the entire setup, also downloaded a couple of demo's for him (not a that evident on a basic pack, lol) from the e-shop. But the music on that Wii U was the same as the OLD tune i heard on my own Wii U. At first i thought it had something to do with a needed update, but i did all the updates and still. I thought, maybe it's cached or something; but after visiting the e-shop about 10 times, still the old tune played... so finally, i thought, maybe it's because i put a different country for my friend's Wii U (he lives in Amsterdam, I near Brussels... I also noticed i could install netflix on his, but not on mine). So maybe the music depends on which country you're in? I haven't heard the Christmas music either.

I don't know how or if USB 3 drives work with Y cables... Wii U only has USB 2, so maybe you can find a fast USB 2 drive for cheaper? Because you won't be getting USB3 speeds anyway, and after formatting, you won't be able to use the HDD for anything but the Wii U, so it seems like a bit wasted on Wii U. I just took an old HDD out of a busted laptop and put it into an enclosure i had, and hooked it up with a Y cable. Works fine. There is a comparison video of loading speeds, with games on disc (slowest), downloaded on USB regular external HDD (faster), downloaded on external SSD (faster yet and nearly as fast as...) downloaded on the internal 32GB SSD (fastest).

Okay is there something you have to do to get a game going I poped in Mario U and the game seems to freeze.

You mean like a console freeze or you can press Home and close it?
Does it download an update in the background maybe?
Is this NSMBU or Mario 3d?

The Wii U is an awesome system and there is really nothing "wrong" with the system or gamepad themselves.

The system just shouldn't have the name Wii in it. This console really favors single player core games and it is already a polar opposite of Wii. So it doesn't appeal much to Wii owners yet and it is having difficulty getting very many core games on it at the same time due to how those games faired on the og Wii. Nintendo needs to spend some more money andy get more third party exclusives since they are leaning more towards something of a core Nintendo gamers console only.

All that considered, the Wii U is a great purchase choice.

My copy of ACIV should turn up in the post tomorrow so this confirms my thought's,I checked loads of pics that compare it against the PS4 version and for me the game pad won for the WiiU version as the graphics look top notch.

So I got my Wii U today and after a spending a good deal of time setting it up (I'm starting to hate glossy black finishes) I tried to update my console and I keep getting the 108-0144 error and it keeps giving me that error despite successfully testing my connection a few times to make sure.

...anyone else having this issue?

Yes. It's very poor at picking up wifi, even though my phone has no problem.
In the end I set it up next to the router and the problem went away.
Edit: May not be wifi in your case but that is one possibility.

Wii U portability is awesome! I mean, I can stuff both the console and gamepad in a small bag, then take it somewhere. Thanks to that, I can download the game all I want using internet connection in my college :p
Though the portability will be greater if the AC adaptor is not half as big as the Wii U itself. Why is it so damned big anyway?

Because Nintendo and MS don't outsource console design to Sony. =)

Personally, i would have expected a 3rd party hardware manufacturer to have released a battery pack for the actual console (like a laptop battery).
