Well, I've had nothing but problems with my Wii U so far.
First of all, I was downloading Wonderful 101 and it stopped halfway through and told me the data was corrupt. It was taking up about 11 gigs, and it wouldn't let me erase the corrupt data no matter what I tried.
So, I called Nintendo, and they told me I had to format my Wii U. I told them I had about 10 hours progress on Mario World 3D, so they told me to copy that onto the 1TB external drive I had attached and I would be able to copy it back after formatting the Wii U. Went ahead and did that, and guess what? That's right! Once you format the Wii U, you're not allowed to read any previously formatted HDDs!
Thanks Nintendo for you absolute shit save game management and DRM. There is actually no way to get a save game off of a digital game at all. It's completely locked to the console.
So, after the debacle of the Nintendo-sanctioned deletion of my 10 hours of Mario progress, I tried to download W101 again. Again I got a corrupt data that I couldn't erase. I went full-bore into Google this time, not daring to call Nintendo. It turns out that the external HDD I was using was probably underpowered because it was powered through USB. I disconnected the drive and tried to download W101 again. This time it went without a hitch.
So, not only did Nintendo stupidly tell me to "back up" my Mario game onto a hard drive that the Wii U was specifically designed not to recognize after a format, they didn't even ask me if the hard drive I was using was USB powered!
With my WiiU finally stable, I transferred all my Wii licenses to the console.
Ok, so all that is behind me, right? Wrong.
The right stick on my WiiU Gamepad started not recognizing being pushed to the right. I nervously call them up again and explain the problem. They want me to send the entire system into Nintendo so they can assess the problem. I then explain to them that I have save data on the console, to which they responded that they would "most likely" not format the Wii U, but they can't be certain.
I demanded to talk to a manager, and finally got him to allow me to just get the game pad replaced. He then told me to mail the Game Pad in and they would fix it, and it would take 6-8 weeks. I then asked him if he could just send me a replacement game pad, and then I could send them the broken one. He said that wasn't possible. He then suggested I go to Best Buy and exchange just the game pad, seeing how I've only had the console for 10 days and there is a 30 day exchange policy.
Today I go into Best Buy, and they of course refuse to exchange just the controller for a new one. They insist I bring the whole system back. I try to explain that all of my save data and Wii licenses are now tied to this console, and I can't remove them so I just need the controller. I explain that all they need to do is open a Wii U box, give me the controller, then put the broken controller in the box and ship it back to Nintendo as defective. They tell me that "the Wii U and Controller are tied together with a serial number" so they can't just give me a controller from another box or they will be charged full price for the entire unit.
Then they explain to me that if I had purchased the Geek Squad warranty, I would be able to go to the Geek Squad desk and they would replace the controller without the system. I then ask "Wait, so if I didn't buy the warranty you can't open a Wii U box and give me a controller, but if I did, you can?". Basically, total bullshit.
So here I am having to send the controller back to Nintendo and wait a month and a half to two months to get it fixed, and all my save data gone.
