Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

There would need to be a considerable amount of new tracks for this to be worth picking up, if you already own the Wii U version, for this to be worth it. Even more so if you bought the DLC.

For Wii U owners it feels like the first year of the Switch might be a hard sell.
I have a Wii U and I'm buying the Switch day one.

I'm expecting baby forms of all the metal forms, 3 separate toad characters and King Boo, that's it
If this means one of the toads are Toadsworth and to a lesser extent, Captain toad, I'm all for it. But I'm all for the RPG characters getting priority. It would be nice to see fawful outside a M&L game.

Sounds good, Mario Kart 8 is my favourite Mario Kart by far so I want more of that.
I hope Capitan Todd is one of the new characters.

.... I'd probably buy it even if it was just a straight port. Portable Mario Kart 8 alone makes it worth it,.

Yes, so as I said, MK8 + old DLC + new DLC. As someone who already played MK8, that's disappointing that 3 years later, we get a MK8 port.

I don't know for sure, I'm commenting what we learn from the thread.

I have no idea indeed. All I see for now is that they plan to rerelease MK8. So unless they come up with a HUGE new content, which would be like doubling the size of the game (so 96 tracks), it's hard to give them props content wise.

Look you had the WiiU this is not primarily for you. This is is for the millions that had MKW and MK7 and skipped over 8. It makes no sense for Nintendo to develop a completely new one.

There will be plenty new stuff for you to Buy like the Mario game.

If this gets a "real" battle Mode Switch might end up being the ultimate Coop console after its first couple months on the market - Splatoon/MK and Smash Bros. sogood.gif

New playable characters... We already got Link, the Villager, and Isabelle.

Now it's the turn of SAMUS!! With a new Metroid theme track, and vehicles inspired on Samus' spaceship!

Please do this! And I'm upgrading from the Wii U version to the Switch version. Otherwise... Meh.

Pretty excited for the console, but as a Wii U owner that already played a lot of Splatoon and Mario Kart, I really can't get excited for these rehashed games :(

You and me aren't the primary targeted audience for these remasters. Wii U had some great family games that many missed because the Wii U was piece of shit hardware.

Yes, which is that they are working on an upgraded/enhanced Mario Kart 8. This doesn't exclude them from working on a different game at all.

Which would require time. But they had 3 years for this. 2 if you want to count the DLCs, which weren't even lost since it's content they could've reused.

I don't mind ports when you're limited in time. But in that case, we had the same timeframe as previous MK release. But this time, not a new one but a port with DLCs.

I mean Emily is calling the thing "the Switch version of Mario Kart 8". I don't see them calling it Mario Kart 9.

There's really no way a brand-new Mario Kart 9 could be better than an enhanced Mario Kart 8, given the amount of content we're talking about.

Battle mode getting fixed patches up the only flaw in the game.

Better yet, how about a new Metroid game instead.

It's upgraded ports like this that get me excited for the switch. I've missed out on so many WiiU games, the prospect of the Switch's library being rounded out with these is fantastic!

They can call it Mario Kart Switch and change the UI's, menus and overall look is all I was saying. If they call it Mario Kart 8 Switch is fine. They may keep UI's and what not the same though.

Don't worry there's going to be new games. We already know about 3D Mario.

I'm so glad they listened regarding the battle mode. I look forward to seeing what kind of maps they come up with for it.

Well just wait until the unveil and see what it is before you get your knickers in a twist (Again).

So Nintendo's plan is to release entries in some of it's most popular franchises all in one calendar year? Seems pretty fucking stupid to me cause they won't really have anything for year two. I mean Mario, Kart, Smash, and Zelda can each carry a calendar year/holiday season, I know they are ports but it'll probably be a while before we get proper sequels. I just feel like they are blowing their load early with the Switch if this is all coming out year one. I'm skeptical but as a non Wii U owner that would be dope.

I guess the question for Nintendo (and one they'll find out soon enough) is whether these games that weren't enough to make people want to buy a Wii U will make them want to buy a Switch now that they've been enhanced for it?

Considering the jump in power it makes little sense. MK8 was already imo the best looking game on the system and best iteration in the series. This is the best route to take considering the target audience. Also allows them more time to work on other games

What? How is buying a Mario platformer going to appease someone wanting a new Mario Kart?

They are banking on people that didn't know the Wii U was ever a thing. For years after the Wii U came out, I still had people asking me why Nintendo never made a console after the Wii.

Gonna feel so good to have a proper battle mode again if this is true.

Even better to rub it in peoples faces who talk shit about battle mode as if its just some side mode nobody cared about.

I think Nintendo's strategy is get the heavy-hitting multiplayer games out of the way ASAP so they can continuously refresh them with DLC/expansions, and then spend the rest of the gen focusing on new single-player games, new IPs, and more niche/cult ventures.

Wonder if this links to the rumour for new DLC packs for the Wii U version that has appeared recently?

Looking at the old season pass, 6 characters and 16 tracks, my guess is this Switch version will had all this plus "season 2" DLC of 6 characters and 16 more tracks.

Switch owners buy the game and they get Wii U version+new DLC, Wii U owners still have the option to get the DLC through a new season pack?

Obviously they are there to support whatever original software they launching Switch with. HD remasters are incredibly popular on PS4/Xbone.

If they put Samus in, I want to see a badass ship themed bike for her.

Oh and they gotta put in an Excitebike dude too. They can call him, Excitebiker.

Splatoon, MK8 and Smash are "service" games which will probably be supported (dlc, events, stability updates...) for a few years.

It makes sense in fact. It's supposed to not only be twice faster at the very least, it's also supposed to be newer tech, which would mean better lighting or particles.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Inklings got in as playable characters.

Link, Villager and Isabelle all have EAD developed origins, which makes them closer to the Mario Kart team than somebody like Kirby or Samus. Going by this, I kinda expect to see some Splatoon stuff. Maybe throw Callie and Marie in there as playable racers as well.

They better be bringing back a proper award ceremony at the end of a championship instead of the MKTV replay rubbish in this version of Mario Kart.

MK8 art style isn't the problem. But I think it's reasonable for anyone to hope for higher poly models, better lighting and effets or even new textures.

Better graphics and new content/balance. Sure we'd end up with Mario Kart 8+ but it'd still feel like a new episode. Some genre are limited in term of evolution. But they also try to update things in term of physics, tech or content.
As I said, unless they provide double the content or nearly 96 tracks, it'd be hard to applaud this considering the time between the two.

I can understand the want for that, but I don't think its absolutely necessary. And who's to say that the final product wont have that, the development team may have that added by the time the game is ready to go gold.

As for balance, I don't think the game needs that either. MK8's racing system plays so well, unless they wanted to add a new gameplay gimmick like the anti-gravity sections, there's no point in changing the system just to change it since 8's was really good. I had always expected MK9 to just have MK8's system to begin with unless they wanted to add something new.

And they don't need to double the content, they just need to create enough new tracks. Like 16 or maybe even 12. All MK's since DS have had retro courses, so all the old content would just be that.

I have a Wii U and I'm buying the Switch day one.

I own one too and I'm potentially buying a Switch on release but I can't say I'm too excited about games I already own. I guess it depends on how much new content there is and the price.

If Wii U ports are going to be a major part of their first year Switch plans then I can wait until there's more new titles out. It's great for people who haven't played them since there's a lot of great games to be had.

As a WiiU owner, having played the vast majority of games published by Nintendo, I really hope that the remasters are icings on the cake and there are quite a few new projects, not necessary of a major calibre, but something along the caliber of Captain Toad..

Their obligation isn't to work on a new Mario Kart game every time they finish the last one. Maybe wait until their games are revealed in January before judging them as they could be working mainly on something completely different while providing this Mario Kart 8 enhanced version as well. Again, you know literally nothing.
