how does geoffs shit show work, if let's say MP4 comes out in december and is a massive success, is december too late to win awards this year?

"Later in 2025" is not the same as "Late 2025"

I was going to say. I don't want to be pedantic, because English may not be OP's first language, but there is a pretty significant distinction. "Late 2025" is essentially the same as saying the game will release this holiday season, while "later in 2025" just means it will release sometime after the expo in mid-August but before December 31st.

In the OPs defense, they just used the same exact title as the article. It was the author of the article that didn't do it right.

Yes it's too late, also who gives a shit?

I'm convinced Metroid Prime 4 is a 2026 game.

If a Game rewards show was honest they would hold one in January 2026 to have the entire selection of all games that were released in 2025 so it's hard to take seriously.

Being pedantic. You mean before January 1st 2026.

Nintendo just released an investors report on August 1st regarding releases for the year and they still have 2025 listed for MP4. They'd know by now if it was gonna be pushed, so not delaying it by now means it's a 2025 game and pushing it could be considered misleading their investors.

It'd take an unforeseen act of nature for it to not make it this year.

God damn it.
breaking bad oops GIF

Imagine taking any show seriously that excludes games that come out late in the year. Fkn lol.
Do they exclude them? Isn't is just cutoff to cutoff for eligibility? Games need time to get into gamer's hands and for them to talk about them and spread the word of mouth. How can you expect to fully evaluate a game released after Thanksgiving for a show that is in the early half of December?

I hope they improve the game a lot, I know it;s not a FPS as such, it's a FPV game

but the game even at 60 FPS, the action seems slow, and the enemies look like they are just standing there to be shot.

As far as I am concerned if it ends up being a November or December release it very much is a 2026 game.

"2025" and "Late 2025" are just placeholders. If they are having a location specific demo in August which is Month 8 out of 12 you are 75% into the year. It's a bit disingenuous.

Give me a release date.

By the end of next week they will drop a release date via Nintendo Today.

Metroid Prime was considered a FPA. First Person Adventure.

Regardless for simplicity sake if you are in First Person and you shoot gun it's a First Person Shooter.

It is considered a 'cutoff' because even though games from december of the prior year are eligible for The Game Awards of the next year, so much time passes and so many games come out per year, that it is essentially buried out of a nomination.

So for most games December is not only seen as a sales death sentence, but also a nomination death sentence.

I think only one game could theoretically break that barrier and make it on the list of game awards of the next year if it released in December, and that game would be Grand Theft Auto.

It would actually make the case for gigantic I.P. releasing in what is usually known as a dead month, because they would sell regardless.

It's going to be Nintendos big holiday title. Prime is finally getting the spotlight it deserves.
Prime was the big holiday title for the Gamecube the year it released (02?). I remember IGN's Matt Cassamasina lamenting about Splinter Cell (at that time, it was Xbox exclusive and had not released on PS2/GCN) sold more during the holiday sales period. He said the better game (Prime) lost that sales match up. I like the Prime games and I like that this game looks very much like more Prime and not a BOTW take on Prime (sort of how Scarlet/Violet look and feel like BOTW but Pokemon) and I know it will sell well due to goodwill of the Nintendo brand and Switch brand but I just don't think Prime games appeal to a large crowd of gamers. I know Dread did well for a Metroid series game in terms of sales but compared to other titles released on the Switch, I'd imagine it's lower on that list.

Edit: I still need to get around to playing through Dread.

The game is not releasing in August, and unlikely in early September, with everyday pushing it closer to late September / early October at the soonest. That is usually considered late in the year.

The investors report always use the latest available public information. They don't confirm any date.

Smash Bros. Ultimate released in December 2018 and made the list in 2019. So it's possible.

Pokemon Legends is the big holiday title (in terms of sales)

If a title was advertised as "late 2025," it definitely would not be releasing in September and probably not in October. When something is listed as arriving late in a year, that generally means November or December, though I suppose the end of October would still be a possibility.

But, regardless, the press release didn't say "late 2025," it said "later in 2025," which has an entirely different meaning. That was my point.

Smash Bros is considered one of the gigantic I.P. I was talking about.

Metroid's name has some merit, but Prime 4 would have to be a revolutionary title for it to release in December and be considered for a nomination 11 months later.

So far what we've seen from it in terms of gameplay has been a very safe step forward. You're still scanning a lot and exploring ruins in typical Prime fashion.

As of now I just don't see it, so I hope it releases beforehand.

I can't picture a fast paced FPS from Nintendo, that is also releasing on Switch1, being GOTY worthy in 2025. I feel like the only reason it would be nominated was because of Nintendo and the nostalgic IP of Metroid Prime

I thought the same back then, and then I played Metroid Prime Remastered and I understood why it got 94 on Metacritic (and the original 97 or 98 even), it's a fantastic game. And I hate FPSs beside Doom

The best Doom game the past 15 years reviewed at an 87 meta. What does Metroid Prime 4 do better than Doom to warrant GOTY contention in the 90's? Will it have better graphics or gun play? No. And yet, it probably will review in the 90s. Which is kind of bullshit because it always feels like Nintendo games are never compared to the standards of today. If MP4 was a completely new IP, releasing on all platforms, nobody would even bring it up as a GOTY contender
