Microsoft: ROG Xbox Ally Will Play All Games Available For PC – Including PlayStation’s Games

Well......we were supposed to get a Microsoft made "Xbox" handheld as well, weren't we?

Just Sayin GIF by MOODMAN

The leaks from last year(?) always said that there would be a branded Ally while they also work separately on their own handheld, jizz's report from a few weeks ago said that they've put it on the backburner to focus more on the dedicated Series follow up.

True but to many that one didn't make a lot of sense as this Asus one was Xbox branded and Xbox was going to push it as such then a year or so later say "Oh wait here is the actual Xbox handheld now give us even more money"

Well, they got us Marvel Tokon with Arc System Works developing, so they aren't a lost cause.

Sony, I mean.

It's not going to be a "console". It's going to be a Windows PC optimized more for gaming (preferably beyond what these ROG Xbox devices can do currently) and BC with as many Xbox games as possible (maybe through an extensive emulation or translation layer).

You're thinking about a "console" to go up directly against PS6. That's not happening anymore.

When rumor of this stuff first start like 18 months ago, I thought it'd be MS integrating more Windows compatibility (locked down and abstracted through some hypervisor layer) to Xbox OS, because they already started that to an extent with Dev Mode.

Instead it's more like they're doing the opposite: bringing Xbox features & compatibility to Windows. They're probably toying with the thought of doing both but in actuality, they'll have to choose one or the other. And I think those next "traditional" Xbox devices are going to be more of Windows with Xbox features/compatibility added, including for BC.

It's not going to be a "traditional" system like Series X & S though. It won't be subsidized or competing at volume with PS6 and Switch 2, there simply isn't enough of a customer base for Microsoft to justify that aspect of a console strategy any longer.

The sooner people accept that the sooner they can accept those next "traditional" Xboxes are going to be hybrids with lots in common with this ROG device and devices like it.
Their partnership with japan/asian studios is not the problem, its the only thing keeping the boat afloat for me this gen... their woke mismanaged first party studios is the rotten needing some cleaning and ass wooping

All of them…

This is no different to any other PC handheld under the hood, so their are caviars of play anywhere titles and streaming, but outright playing the native console versions it cannot do.
but is there a pc version of every xbox game? if so, why would I care if I am playing the pc version?

Yes, I know. Looks to me like their own handheld is on the same "backburner" as Project Keystone. Instead they went with Roku. Point is plans change.

The Asus variant definitely made more sense.

No, there isn't

No, there isn't
I'm wondering if they were even serious about their own handheld. What's a couple million in research costs to them if the expenses could let them pay lip service to hardware still being a priority?

I really did think they would protect that garden via future hardware. But I'm starting to wonder if their future hardware plans were ever more serious than "just 4 games."

You are wrong......Xbox branded hardware will play PlayStation branded games.
If the next Xbox console plays all PC games(steam/epic/ubi etc. launchers) basically you also have major PlayStation branded games on your console.
So lets think in the moment....why will I need to buy next PS6 hardware when I can get next Xbox & play all games on it & all libraries I have for PC & Xbox + Game Pass ( who will be cheaper because PC Game Pass).
Hell I can even emulate Switch & PS4 games if needed :messenger_beaming:
Smart move MS....I will give you that.
I wouldn't say smart move but deceptive and it's working. I agree with almost every point you made. This flies on the face of console gaming..... unless you are Nintendo lol.

ok, so what are the biggest and most beloved xbox games that lack a pc port?

Every Xbox console game that isn't Play Anywhere. Elden Ring. Baldur's Gate 3. Cyberpunk 2077. Think of any third party AAA game released on Xbox since the beginning of this generation and more than likely it isn't Play Anywhere.

Could very well just be PR buzz to generate discussion of the future of Xbox. Would love to be a fly on the wall at Xbox HQ.

This is Sony's signal. Nuke the PC initiative. Remove the games from all PC storefronts and pretend it never happened. Corporate gaslighting time.

I see. That makes it less interesting.

But there is a pc version of Cyberpunk 2077. Does it mean I would have to buy it again for the pc?

It took a while for Microsoft to finally do something about windows on PC handhelds. I'm hoping this windows for handhelds be available for desktop PC's, I'm tired to wait for Valve to release their OS to Desktop PC's specially with Nvidia cards. If Microsoft beat them to it, and Microsoft replicate the steam mapper to be universal on Windows as powerful as Valve's, and I'll gladly use it on my living room, I even go as far as call it Xbox Just for kicks and giggles.

As a portable, It's a little too rich for my blood. Specially being a low-end machine graphically.

Xbox branded controllers have been playing Playstation games for years, I must have missed all the buzz.

Not really a console though. It's a PC with an xbox sticker, you can do that right now.

Sounds like you just discovered the benefits of PC gaming. Why wait for an "Xbox" next year? You can do all those things now.
I'm doing it right now...problem is my PS5 is dust collector & I can't justify anymore purchasing games who are multiplatform on Sony console when I have option to play my Xbox & PC library on one place.

MS are in a tricky position, why would anybody buying a PC buy "Play Anywhere" versions of games if they don't also want/own an Xbox? why would anyone want a native Xbox when they can either get more games on PC or PlayStation? Why would most publishers support "Play Anywhere" unless MS pays them (or buys them)?

It does seem like they are making token gestures to legacy Xbox fans for now whilst they transition into a publisher only or get everyone onto Gamepass one way or another.

There isn't a charge for Xbox remote play.

It runs a customized version of Windows. PS runs a customized version of FreeBSD 11. We are all playing on PCs! OMG OMG OMG!

Eh.......I can't remove the OS from PS and run whatever OS I want. On PC I can. False equivalence to equate the two my man

Play anywhere would only hold value if Xbox console continues to be a thing, honestly, right now I really doubt that will be the case, Microsoft leadership keep lying and gaslighting their costumer, to me, Xbox as a console is dead, the cat is out of the box, there is no way to revert things now.

Sony still needs to release some games for the PC.
It's Astrobot PC time!
Astrobot, Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo 7. That's what I have left before I have everything this gen on my living room Xbox PlayStation PC.

Regarding PlayStation games on the ROG Xbox Ally. I did some quick googling on how well PlayStation PC ports run on a regular ROG Ally… and, yeah, I think people need to lower their expectations…
In the end it's a weak PC. And there won't be any Nvidia magic to save it.

It's just a PC brick so it plays PC games that's it. It doesn't play all Xbox console games, but it will play PC ports of PS games. And Switch games if you put the right emulator on it. That's what PCs do. It's also going to cost the price of a PC brick, and games won't be optimized as they are on console. And it will be a PC experience. It's the same thing as a Rog Ally without Xbox in the name.

Some of the posts in here make me think that there are people out here that got an Xbox themed Backbone controller and think remote playing PS games using it means that all PS games are on Xbox, because the controller means your phone is now an Xbox!

That was pretty cool. I even downloaded the IBM dev tools thinking I was going to learn Cell programming. Reality said otherwise lol
Independence Day would have been much more realistic if they would have hacked the alien mothership with a PS3 instead of a Macbook.

(Yes, I know PS3 came after Independence Day, but the point remains, Cell is just so alien. Great for certain tasks but completely unsuitable as a general-purpose CPU for mere mortals.)

Its a PC handheld with a Xbox seal tag on it.
By the gods, this kind of behaviour will transform us all in neanderthals. Next people will try warring with bowl of cereals with a Xbox seal on it.

I picture a bunch of cavemen sitting around a fire holding different handhelds then getting into a console war fight swinging the handhelds around like clubs.

Jizz's report from a few weeks ago said that they've put it on the backburner to focus more on the dedicated Series follow up.

Slight correction: Jez said they put it on the backburner to focus on third-party devices like this Xbox-branded Rog Ally.

Relevant quote from Jez:

Our sources have indicated to us that Microsoft is still deeply investing in developing its own Xbox gaming handheld technology in the future, but it was announced internally today that the priorities are moving more deeply towards third-party OEM handhelds in the interim. (....) Microsoft has decided to prioritize its teams on the partner opportunity around devices like Kennan."

He did mention in the first paragraph that "The Xbox Series X successor is totally safe, with development continuing at full pace" - presumably to reassure readers - but otherwise doesn't mention that in the article.

All signs, indications and our resident prophet HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 are pointing towards there being a next traditional Xbox console in development.

Slight correction there, too. :p I believe HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 has been clear that they are not working on a "traditional Xbox console" but rather a PC/Xbox hybrid of some sort.

The headline I would've loved to get would be something akin to this:

"Rog Xbox Ally unveils MS new, reinvented, unlocked and sleek OS. Promises extensive driver support to come. Benchmarks should have Valve/SteamOS worried"

An Xbox branded device like this should at least gotten a headline like this:

"Rog Xbox Ally - Yes it's excactly what it says on the tin. How to play your entire Xbox library in 5 easy steps. It even plays PC games"

But instead we get news articles about how a handheld PC can play games avalible on PC...but now with a ground breaking, mind blowing Xbox sticker and button.
