Microsoft to live stream E3 conference on the 360

I imagine all this is for the mainstream features they may announce and not for halo 4 (or any game) itself.

Yeah, of course it's not just this one thing. I'm still pretty sure that it's an important milestone in Halo 4's marketing.

And it's what I'm the most excited for, so I'm biased.

Is G4 and Spike both airing it?

Edit: Or wait, did Spike have exclusive rights to air MS live last year, and the G4 aired it the next day or something?

After the disaster that was G4 airing commercials during the one MS conference, I'd never watch them again.

Well that's because hundreds of thousands of people aren't slamming the free stream. This will be during work hours though, so it should be fine.

And when they were slammed the UFC went down too. I couldn't watch the first live event they aired for the UFC because it was free and getting hammered.

I thought you were talking about last year. My bad.

You guys keep acting like 80% of MS conference was only kinect. Serious, how much time you think that Kinect took from MS conference? 1 hour? 50 min? Did you even watched the conference?

I guess you can expect a lot of non game announcements.

Was there ever a reason to expect anything different?

Microsoft E3 usually goes like this
Call of Duty
Another multiplatform title
Another multiplatform title
New and irrelevant apps, dashboard modifications
Kinect stuff
Fable
Forza
Gears
Halo
Secret unveil that no one cares about

With Kinect and the irrelevant stuff taking up most of the time. I forgot to add that.

For me HBO and ESPN are as important as Netflix, which the 360 was also the first to get. In retrospect it's probably pretty silly to think of Netflix as being a given, but at one point this was pretty impressive. If MS can score a couple more big name partners it would not be insignicant at all, at least not to the audience they are trying to build on.

i just skimmed through last year and that seems about right. 10 minutes on COD, 10 minutes on Lara Croft, 5 mins on Gears, 5 minutes on Halo, couple minutes on some internet/tv apps, everything else was Kinect related.

lol

Also, "another multiplatform title". Last year was "just" Mass Effect 3 (which sold like 3x more than PS3?). And Tomb Raider, one of the surprises of E3.

They need to concentrate more time on XBLA but I know they won't cause it is a sales conference for retailers. Too bad too as I play and buy more XBLA games than I have retail games this year.

I don't think they need to focus that much on Kinect this year though. They can show kinect Skyrim stuff if they want to skew it more towards the gamer. Any media app they release from this point forward is going to feature kinect integration so obviously all of that stuff will be kinect enabled. I think they'll probably show Crimson Dragon and the mech game. What would be a surprise at this point? Mark Rein on stage to demonstrate UE4 running on a dev kit?

Kinect was released in November 2010, so it was reasonable for them to show off more games for it the following E3.

Yup. Even if my controllers got stolen tomorrow, I would still be using my 360 non stop. I think this is one of the mistakes Nintendo made with Wii - it would have been an excellent media box with that "remote" if only it had DVD and HDMI, I would never have thrown it in the closet.

Their reasons are their reason, whatever. But it was implied they don't spend 80% of the conference time on Kinect when they are pretty close to that.

I just skimmed 2010, it was about the same as 2011, maybe even more Kinect focused.

The first 1 hour of the conference was directed to the core audience. The kinect stuff showed in that time was the new NXE, EA Sports games, Mass Effect, Ghost Recon and Fable. They used 30 min for the "kinect stuff", and ended with Halo 4.

Wasn't even half the time. About 30 minutes out of the 90 was Kinect stuff. Granted, it was the last 30 minutes which made it seem like it was most of the conference since we didn't get a transition out of it.(aside from the show ending halo teaser.)

They did spend a good portion of the first hour showcasing Kinect too, about 25 minutes.

They showed off stuff that could be used with or without Kinect. Using gunsmith with Kinect doesn't take away from the fact that it's a cool feature that will appeal to everyone who plays the game.

Spending time on Kinect is what the conversation started about, so even though what they demoed they can be used without it they still spent that time showcasing Kinect features.

The problem is that people like you depict something like the ME3 demo (which featured kinect voice controls) as a negative just because it includes kinect.

An optional feature doesn't erase the fact that it was a quality title being presented, but you guys much rather dismiss this notion.

Ugh, they really need to release the next console. Every MS thread now is just complete trolling, regardless of the topic. Sure, the next console will get trolled too but so does every new console. I'm not even saying that they didn't bring it on themselves, just that it's gotten boring.

You beat me to the punch.

MS announces a service that, no matter what, is an improvement over not offering the service, and potentially could be a really cool way to bring the conference into people's homes.

GAF responds with a tidal wave of negativity and jaded criticism.

Sure, there's some cause to be skeptical, but fuuuck you guys are a cynical bunch.

And the more negative the reaction on GAF, the better the product sells/performs so it seems.

That's what this was about, spending time on Kinect.

Which people like you depict as a negative which explains some of the replies to your post.

Or are you ignoring this very obvious point?
Well it's a negative for me because I see no benefit in voice control over gamepad controls, yes. But this was about time spent not my feelings.

Cool.

This is great for the couple friends of mine that don't have a PC or laptop handy next to their 360, and we can all watch it at the same time in the party chat.

Just realized the Spike coverage is starting 30 minutes before the conference. I wonder if they will be having any kind of exclusive reveal on the pre show.

Somebody should tweet Geoff!

Edit-I think last year Phil Spencer was on the pre show with Geoff and talked about XBLA stuff. Might even be when SoA was announced.

I find this theory very interesting. Kind of odd but yes Gaf wasnt really sold on the 3DS or Kinect and it has sold gangbusters. Vita is very loved here yet sales are kind of meh.

Presumably for Go(a'u)ld members only. Hopefully we'll get some steady streaming without hitches. Don't care if its 480p.
