Hell, before the first punch was thrown at Richard Spencer he was laughing at the ineffectiveness of peaceful non-violent protest. Now two punches have been thrown and he is questioning his ability to lead a movement and spout his rhetoric and how without this it'll lead to failure. All it took was two punches. This is after years of peaceful protests and the allowal of hateful opinions to exist as a form of free speech.

People are scared. Minorities, blacks and those of the LGBT community we're targets anyway. But now we are going down a path were the idea of outright destruction isn't so far fetched. Of course violence is going to erupt out of that fear, and so it should, as with any movement before it violence as a tool of the oppressed can work to make change.

I used to be under the false impression that racism was basically eradicated by the Civil Rights movement in the 60s. After the last few years with race relations deteriorating and the rise of these alt-right assholes, I've come to the conclusion that they never went away, and they simply took their hate and bigotry underground.

They got quiet about it in person and instead whispered their message to their next generation... We're looking at it now.

So, I'm not blaming the fire starters and violence makers for the bigots.
Absolutely not.

I'm blaming the fire starters for getting the situation large media coverage which makes the alt-right look like the victim.
They should never look like the victim.

They should look like the wrong thinking, outdated, pieces of shit that they are: remnants of abhorrent ideas from a long time ago that have no official place in this day or age.

Make support of them untenable. Milo threatens the safety of University students. His rhetoric aims to make more Dylan Roofs. Peaceful protests don't get that message across to Universities willing to give him platforms. This is escalation and what protesters were warning against. He will "go away" when the cost of supporting outweighs the gain.

Growing up in a 99% white rural town, our public school system completely failed us on this. We were taught a cursory overview of civil rights, how MLK came along and suddenly everything was great and we all loved each other and we could pat ourselves on the back and not feel bad about slavery or any past atrocities.

Wasn't until I moved to the real world that I realized shit was still really bad. I really regret the years I spent with a worldview that is really close to what we now call "alt-right" where I believed that racism was dead and everyone was on a level playing field.

Why do we need to tolerate the other side of violence?

They learn about how bad things were before, and then they don't see that around now, so it gives the impression that racism is a non-issue. The kids at Berkeley have the right to protest this shitheads talks. The violence is discouraging, but expected given the climate and location. The main problem is that I'm having trouble reconciling the very right and good idea of "Punch Nazis" with "violently protest against Milo and his supporters" which I'm not quite sure we should be doing, to be honest. Milo has his share of dangerous and intentionally inflammatory speech, but are we fighting against Nazism when we pursue aims of violence against him, or are we fighting against soft white-nationalism?

If we are going to group those things together, is that the end of it? Or is the definition creep going to move toward regular racists, then diet racists, then bad allies? This may sound like pedantry but I think it's extremely important. If we are at the point where violence is acceptable to use against certain groups (it obviously is) then we need to be able to say for sure that person [x] requires violent intervention right? Is it okay to punch Milo? His supporters? Only when they're speaking?

I don't want this to be taken as tacit approval of Milo's vile rhetoric, only as a way to understand just how far things have gone or will go in order to push back against the rising tide of white-nationalism. We've opened the pandora's box of political violence as a means to an end and can't sit around ignoring it.
