Source confirms that the WWC Final drew an astounding 15.2 overnight rating. @SonOfTheBronx was the first I saw with this number today.

I need to revise my WWC final prediction to more than 20 million viewers, based on a source who saw the "non-adjusted fast national" rating.

based on early overnight TV ratings in America, US Women's World Cup game DOUBLED viewers from US finals just 4 yrs ago.

According to TV By The Numbers, 20.3 million people watched the 2015 Women's World Cup final. Up until last night, the three most-watched soccer events in U.S. television history were (in descending order) the U.S.-Portugal match during the 2014 World Cup (18.2 million), the 1999 Women's World Cup final (17.9 million), and the 2014 World Cup final between Germany and Argentina (~17.3 million). This year's final easily ascended to the top of that list.

When compared to the other major summer sporting events this year, it easily beat out the NBA Finals (average overnight rating of 13.9) and the Stanley Cup finals (7.6 million viewers).

Great news overall. Now maybe we can stop with the "no one in the US cares about soccer."

Awesome! This was my view from a viewing party in a park near my house.

Yeah, I can believe it. I talked to a lot of people who watched who normally aren't interested in soccer at all. I think several factors helped:

1. We're good.
2. Everyone can get invested in the World Cup, unlike NBA/NHL where you may not be a fan of those teams.
3. Men's World Cup was pretty fun and well broadcast last year. I think people want more.
4. Summer is a great time for this, people are hungry for sports.

My family watched. Helped serve as a painkiller after Argentina lost on Saturday.

If it had been a closer game, there probably would have been even more viewers.

Uhhh NBA Finals and Stanley cups are 4-7 games

World cup finals & Super bowl are 1 game

easier to watch and plan

good. they've been getting lots of hype on ESPN so it's not a surprise. plus it's only a once-in-4-years commitment and just 1 match, making it easier to sell.

well those are great numbers. But on the other hand i would hope that international competition would be more popular than national ones.
But of course the fact that it's the Womens World Cup makes it more impressive. Interest is certainly there and that's good.

This doesn't really change that. A shit ton of Americans also watched the US play in the gold medal hockey game against Canada in 2010. Doesn't mean they're all hockey fans.

People watched this because the US had the chance to be the best in the world at something. The fact that it was soccer was pretty irrelevant.

Yeah, it was good.

Don't think it's gonna translate to long term support for the women's soccer league though.

It's very easy to root for your national team representing the red, white, and blue in a big event hosted every 4 years.

Not quite the same thing when it's the... Seattle Sounders versus the Thorns or whatsits.

Top 5 Markets

Code:
1. Kansas City (20.6/35)
2. St. Louis (20.5/33)
3. San Diego (19.5/41)
4. Denver (19.4/36)
5. Austin (19.1/37

Wow, Fox has to be extremely pleased right now. I ws only planning to check in to see what was happening and wound up watching the whole thing after that crazy first 16 minutes.

Saying it did better than the NBA finals is generous. It averaged nearly 20 million viewers for six games, most of which were during weekdays.

It will make at least some increase in long-term support. Happens after every world cup, even the ones where we don't do particularly well (See: Last year's men's world cup).

I don't get it. Surely there were more games in this tournament than this, why not compare average viewership instead of this one game versus the average of a 6-7 games series.

Stat seems cherry picked.

Because the other games in the Women's World Cup were not the final.

That's awesome. But the comparison isn't completely fair. If the NBA Finals was one game the viewership would inflate, and if the WC final was a best-of-seven series the average would be lower than a one game total.

Either way, awesome that people turned out to watch it, especially for the women.

So, what? The Olympics tend to average a better rating than those sports championships as well, but I don't see people dying to watch a non-Olympic track meet.

I'm just glad people are watching the game. It is fun to have real discussions about the sport rather than getting 30 seconds into a conversation until the generic.
"Anyone can do that" "Easy goal" "Foot fairies" etc etc etc.

I don't need football to trump the other American sports, I just want it be lumped with the rest.

Fantastic! Hopefully the viewership for the MLS trends upward.
