New Sonic game rumored to be unviled in February for almost every platform

Sonic Colors is fantastic. Great coordination between 3D and 2D phases, well-implemented "power ups", such a joy to play and to look at thanks to one of the best graphics on Wii. So much better than that turd that was Sonic and the Black Knight that it seems from another dimension.
Unfortunately, I've not played Generations yet, but despite seeing through videos some shortcomings compared to Colors ( no double jump / no jump in the water) what I've seen was very good. Hopefully I'll play it in the next future.
So, what can I say? I trust Sonic Team now, I hope we'll see this new work very soon!

Id like to see the reactions from people when the characters they loathed the most control well and are fun to play in the new game. You know, since Sonic Team makes quality, fun games now.

Dimps no longer knows how to make good/decent Sonic games. Find someone one else for your handheld or watered down ports SEGA.

I was playing Sonic 4 Ep1 earlier, I don't think it's the abomination many make it out to be but it is aggravating at times. I just hate that you lose momentum when you stop pressing a direction, it makes certain sections a pain...plus it looks especially silly when you go off a pinball flipper and just *stop* moving horizontally :P

I still have fun with it though, the level design is strong in places and I actually like the music, even if it's not top tier. Definitely disappointing though considering it carries that 4 in the title, and that Mega Man 9 turned out so fantastically =/

Yeah, I think a lot of people were upset due to the false advertisement of the game of it being a "true classic experience" that SEGA was doing, but I don't think it's awful at all and rather similar to the NSMB games just without the same quality in level design and gameplay. It's still kinda fun, the music isn't terrible and some tracks are pretty nice like the Mad Gear ones. I'd give it a 7/10 myself.

Hopefully sonic team fixes the length of the next game because colors and generations was just to short and didn't have much replay value. i was really disappointed when i beat generations in less than a day.

I put all of that disappointments aside and replayed it a few months ago with a more open mind. Still didn't like the game due to bad level design and cheap quality in general. Definitely not Dimp's worst game for sure though. I sometimes debate whether Ep 2 is worse or not because it improved in nearly every single area from Ep 1 but worsen the level and boss designs. :(

This next Sonic game needs to have a bitchin' cyber/digital zone.

Actually, to elaborate on this more. I recall my initial reactions to the Sonic Heroes story.

1. "Why is Shadow alive?"
2. "What is this weird android Shadow stuff?"
3. "Why are the characters acting like Sonic Adventure 2 never happened?"
4. "Oh, cool. Nice look of Metal Sonic"
5. "Chaotix are a little humorous."
6. "Amy should stop talking."
7. "Oh whoa...what is going on here?" Metal Madness
8. "Awesome Super Sonic fight."
9. "Why did Tails just kick Metal Sonic over?"
10. "All right, that's enough Shadow android stuff.."
Wait, seriously? Lol

Have we received an additional confirmation on this outside of the Sonic Stadium posting the rumour? Sonic Stadium is the only place I've seen this posted. Even Sonic Retro closed all the threads that posted this and TSSZ News (known for posting absolutely anything without evidence; even that Sonic Dimensions rumour from a while back) actually chose against posting this rumour. I know we're all excited to get the first word on a new Sonic game but there's a chance this information may not be true.

It's the most believable and likely to be correct rumour I've read in months; but still a rumour. Have any of you guys seen this posted elsewhere?

At least Sonic Heroes gave us Crush 40's best song. (Not that they have a great library of songs to begin with.)

Eh, it's my personal favorite anyway.

I work with Sonic Stadium and they rarely ever post rumors unless there's a very solid source behind it.

Thinking about it now, I think I do remember hearing some sort of rumor almost a year ago that Sonic Adventure 3 (or something similar to it) would be coming out in 2013.

I wonder if it's from the same source?

The rumours (and even excerpts from interviews) have heavily hinted that the next game is Sonic Adventure 3; or at least a spiritual successor to Sonic Adventure 2. There's multiple quotes from Iizuka specifically that indicate this. Searching now he has spoken about a potential Sonic Adventure 3 as far back as 2010 which would be around the time Sonic Team would have decided on plans for the next game to follow Generations.

Something else that is important is that the character selection featured in this rumour (ten playable characters) indicates the Sonic Adventure format. Sonic Adventure was the first in the series to feature a vast amount of playable characters. Something that hasn't been seen in the last set of games. Resurrecting this does strongly indicate that this game could be Sonic Adventure 3. I'm uncertain as to whether they'll call it Sonic Adventure 3; but it could theoretically be the follow-up to Sonic Adventure 2.

I would love that. Sonic Adventure 2 was one of the best Sonic games ever; and also one of the best selling Sonic games ever too (one million plus sales on GameCube alone).

Sonic Adventure 3 would be really weird with the current tone of Sonic storytelling nowadays. It would stick out like a sore thumb after going from the comedic Colors story and the non-existent Generations story into something as complex as Adventures; unless they decide to drop the story altogether, which will disappoint a lot of people.

Personally I don't like that idea.

IMO, the Sonic franchise's raison d'etre is not "diverse mechanics" (mechs, flying, key hunting, etc) and it's certainly not story, so switching characters seems uninteresting to me.

It's claim to gaming fame is to be the platformer with speed, flair and panache.

If the alternate characters are just as speedy as Sonic and have similarly thrilling traversal through levels, then ok, but if it's just to introduce new slow mechanics and hunting for keys and shit... no. I think that's a step away from the Sonic franchise serving its purpose in the world of gaming. It becomes less of that "essential videogame", and more of a franchise starring animals in a themed piece of merchandise that just happens to be a videogame.

Well, it doesn't need to be complex or anything. I mean, look at Heroes. Or, on the flip side, look at Unleashed and see how it made a "complex" story with essentially only 3 characters.

Besides, a comical or light-hearted setting using a vast amount of characters may get people to like them more. Sonic Chronicles, for all the flak it gets, proved that the characters can be likable if they are written well.

EDIT: And I'd have to agree that I don't want such radically different playstyles such as mechs, fishing, or anything like that. Like for Tails, just give me an improved version of his SA1 self (fast, great flight controls, etc.).

For gameplay reasons, I don't care if it doesn't make sense, just at least make all characters fast. There's no reason for anyone to be slow in a Sonic game. Maybe just make the boost ability specific to Sonic...?

TSSZ has a massive beef against TSS because of the latter being openly critical against a lot of the former's baseless reporting, mostly when it comes to the founder and his history of community instigation. Even Retro are critical against them (Cute Fluffy Kittens is the word filter for TSSZ on their boards and became an in-joke I believe). They're not going to report on any original reports TSS comes with obviously.

As for Retro, I think they have a policy for rumors but I don't know much about how they operate.

The only previous rumor mill I recall TSS spinning was when they were told an All-Stars Racing sequel was being developed for the Wii U among other platforms during the beginning of last year, and that ended up being real.

Where are all these supposed hints of SA3? Iizuka was taken by surprise last summer when the crowd at Sonic Boom cheered for an SA3. He's always said there's no plans, and for once I'm pretty sure I believe the guy.

Well, that was more so my point. It sold that much on the least sold console of that generation, I'm sure it would have sold a lot more if it was on PS2.

1.6 million on a console with a 21 million install base. Almost 1 in 10 GameCube owners bought the game. Incredible. It sold over a million on Dreamcast too so you're looking at combined sales of almost equal to Sonic 1 and 2 on the Sega Genesis (the best selling Sonic games of all-time). As for the PS2 making Sonic Adventure irrelevant. That makes zero sense. The games were good and are remembered fondly. I'm not sure what you're trying to prove with that post.

As for a Sonic Adventure 3. The development of the game doesn't necessarily mean they'll adhere to the same exact formula of past titles. Ten years of franchise evolution since then dictates that the game could be vastly different. I have a feeling Sega will use the name to increase sales. The Sonic Adventure series are the best selling 3D Sonic titles in existence and a cash-strapped and financially insecure Sega knows that. They are acutely aware of fan-demand for the game.

The new game is Sonic Adventure 3. I'm almost certain of it. It might not be called Sonic Adventure 3; but a spiritual successor? Highly probable.

Sonic games have been vile for a long time now.

Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations both say hi. And if you plan on arguing with me both games have an almost 80 rating on Metacritic (Colors 78 and Generations 77).

obligatory "did you play Colors/Generations" post
It's like people ask this question a lot in these threads now, haha.

If you're not completely sold on Generations, then perhaps Colours might be the better choice since it's more cohesive and relies on unlockable powerups for better level flow.

Whatever this is, as long as it's got blue skies, great music, and S-ranks then I'm down.
But what if it's like Sonic 1 where it takes place over the period of an entire day, and thus the skies aren't always blue? :O

It's getting harder and harder for hater to bash new Sonic games. There's a surprising lack of classic fans shitting this topic also. I'm pleasingly surprised.

I never considered this.

I like Generations a lot and I could easily bash the hell out of it, a 77 metacritic score isn't much of a defence against criticism.
Though compared to what they've had to rise out from like a cesspool of Sonic 06 "quality" then yeah I guess it is a fair bit harder.

Yeah, we do have a policy against rumours. We're not posting about them on the front page unless it's something like ESRB ratings or if the news is pretty much confirmed to be true. (like the Sonic Adventure 2 XBLA leak)

Don't throw around hater because it might be the case where they don't hate the games, but dislike their general direction or certain aspects of it but not the entire product. Some people on GAF really like the games, but just don't like the direction they chose in the Adventure Era, which is perfectly reasonable.

Like, I don't think Generations is cohesive enough to put it above Colours, for example. It certainly has its pacing issues, and the issues at the end that makes it seem horribly rushed to meet the date where it went gold.

wait what
What.

Green Hill - morning
Marble Zone - afternoon
Spring Yard Zone - dusk
Labyrinth Zone - it's indoors
Star Light Zone - night
Scrap Brain Zone - dawn

I think Sonic3&K takes place over the span of multiple days.

obligatory "did you play Colors/Generations" post
I was joking about the games being vile because the title says "unviled."

But no, I haven't played either game. SA2 was the end of the line for me. Maybe someday the wounds will heal.
