Still super curious how an off the shelf is really gonna work... I thought a bunch of the PS5's SSD perf was via it's 12 channel design... how is a bit of extra raw speed really gonna make up for the fact regular SSDs are 4 channels?

Isn't it all to do with price? If you use more channels, your NAND chips can be slower and therefore cheaper. And vice versa.

Agreed. The PS5 looks to be fantastically engineered, but from an aesthetically point of view, it's definitely not to my taste. If we could cram the PS5 into the XSX box, that would be perfect.
Or if they would have just painted the damn thing all black...

Atleast this make is easy to get ahold of special edition plates instead of a whole console

Sony said the back of the PS5 where the ports are is the exhaust. Seems the vents along the top/front are intakes.
Well dang, I would imagine they ran it both ways and saw which method measured to lowest temps. I am happy either way with how big that heatsink is, there are gaming laptops with 2080ti and 9900k with smaller heat sinks

Well sure.. it's a cost thing.. but I'm not entirely sure what that has to do with my question.

Maybe the PS5 RAW speed is only with all 12 channels lit up, so a 7GB/second 4 channel is enough to make up for that? Since it can access 4 files simultaneously at a much higher speed than PS5 can, and only needs to "catch up" when PS5 accesses more than 4 files at a time?

I honestly don't really know how this shit works lol

I can see. 😂

It's nothing to do with the channels. It's how fast the memory chips are at the end of them.

No, and it shouldn't be enough to anybody. You being a developer doesn't mean you have access to both consoles nor that you are fair doing comparisons.

Having said that. How come Ms supposedly NDA-ed people to not talk about heat problems but you are able to?

I doubt MS NDA-ed people to "not talk about heat problems", it's more likely a case of them laying out a timeline of what could be talked about when (and heat dissipation probably not even on there).

The unit should be fine horizontal, just be sure to give it a few inches to breath. The heat talk is much ado about nothing.

Very similar to X1 and PS4, MS had the cooler running system across all models, the PS4 models were hotter. That did not equate to the PS4 models breaking/overheating, they were fine.

How many watts does each console use ? Watts are listed on specs, we can deduce watts used as a % of power supply)
From the PS5 breakdown they are using a 350W power supply.
DF said that XSX is using a 300W one.
With that in mind it seems PS5 would use more than XSX, making it hotter.

hemo memo

You can't die before your death
Stop including everyone I don't think people got trigger, it's sad to see MS reaction like a child mocking PS5 while Sony does their job , posting things like this won't making successful , but focus making games will, not posting crap on twitter. for example like the meditation video :messenger_tears_of_joy: it's a video game company do all that isn't good sign or management.

So when a company act all suits and robotics people complain that they are run by non human and when a company include some humor and act human because they should as it is the video game industry which is all about fun people complain that they are acting childish? How about being a human and laugh at a harmless joke?

The biggest issue they will probably have is that drive manufacturers lie through their teeth in regards to specs. Often embellishing performance with caches, etc. with real-world performance falling off a cliff when a very limited set of ideal conditions aren't met. Samsung has been one of the worst offenders there (in the past with some of the old evo SATAs, the new ones are probably on point). Once Sony gets a list curated, it should be smooth sailing.

I'm venturing a guess that the UI breakdown won't be too far behind this. Maybe by the end of this weekend?

We've gotten teardown and the revamped Trophies system.

And they've probably present it in exactly the same way. No fuss, no big fanfares, just a drop onto the official Playstation channel. I actually think they're handling social media really well when they do announce something... it's just that it's all been a long time coming.

What's the problem if someone else's wife or girlfriend look at that huge white thing in the living room, completely disharmonious from everything else, and not be glad with it? Even I would feel a little bad about it, and I would be the one to play in it.

Taste is completely subjective so I don't think we have to make a huge deal out of it, but it is huge and very "showy", so I'm sure lots of people would prefer if it was a bit more discreet.
Red flags are raised when strange demands like those come up. There's no surprise that half of all marriages end in divorce, and within a short period of time. People ignore these red flags all the time. Anyway, it's off-topic. If aesthetics of an electronic device are a point of contention, there is a mountain of friction ahead. That's tip of the iceberg stuff. Proceed with caution.

It depends what the design of the supply is, PSU dont run at 100 % do they, so we dont know what is chosen for power draw.

Also Ps5 fan will move much more air under static load being centrifugal and 45 mm thick, so it will run cooler.

Add in liquid metal TIM and did you notice the vias on the back of the APU, its cooling boths ides in effect. Their is a heat pipe on teh cover plate.

Ah interesting, thanks.

Wasn't sure what Cerny meant by that.

Because speed is all that matters. The PS5 used 12 channels to give them higher speed per cost. Slower nand flash (cheaper) over more channels allows for higher bandwidth/speed. They built an entire M.2 drive bay inside every console. It'll work fine.

I don't know... maybe people are too sensitive and sees "red flags" everywhere, which might end up raising a real one down the road.

Ok got it thanks; so it's really more about whether the off the shelf drive will REALLY sustain that 5.5GB/second hence why Cerny says it will take drives that are rated higher than PS5's raw, since actual speeds tend to be lower than advertised?

Thanks for the explanation!

Lets say you have a disc based PS5 if you take the panels off remove the disk drive and order a replacement digital panel do you end up with a Digital Edition and vice versa.
Unless the necessarily connection to hook up the drive isn't there on the digital PS5. They could even just disable any drives via the OS. But sure, theres no reason why someone couldn't just remove the disc drive from the regular PS5.

Something like that. The Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB is 7 GB/s. That should be fine, and it will definitely fit inside that bay.

We will have plenty of choices because it can fit 4 different sizes. And plenty of manufactures would love to sell their SSDs to millions of PS5 owners.

Sony is using stock internal PC SSDs for adding storage, so thats great for us. Manufactures will not need to make custom drives for Sony. They can make their PC drives but now sell them to even more buyers.

Yeah I'm pretty stoked on it.

Probably won't need it the first year anyways, so by next year hoping lots of $150 / TB drives exist to choose from.

But I'm also curious to see people actually do tests and see if there is a difference in games.
