Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

There isn't two versions to download, there is one version that plays on both machines. It doesn't download only what the target platform needs because the file works on both machines without the need for any additional download, that goes for all the Series games.

Hopefully they get that fixed. Haven't there already been games where the sizes are smaller on XSS than XSX. I thought Smart Delivery was getting every console the package it needed?

It's possible there isn't a different set of assets in the MLB game and that causes the files to be the same size. If the difference between the versions boils down to a few config files, that's where you might not see a difference.

So if you download a game on your Series S, transfer it to the expansion SSD and then plug it into the Series X and boot the game it will download additional duplicates of assets already found on the SSD but in higher resolution? While keeping the lower quality assets, not replacing them?

No it doesn't download anything.

The file is the same irrelevant of which machine you download it onto. If I download it on Series S I can move it to Series X and it will play and the other way round, because the one file contains everything needed for both machines.

There is nothing to fix.

Once installed you can shrink some games but not all on Series S, this must remove extra assets for Series X. Like I said though I don't do that even when available because I move the external expansion between four machines.

We already know games that the sizes are different between S and X.

That is exactly what Smart Delivery does.... download only what the target platform needs.

Ah, i understand now. It probably has both the lower res assets/high res assets no matter which Series model.

This cant be the case for all games though? At least 1st party titles should have different install sizes?

The games have different install sizes between S and X.
That makes what he claim really weird.

PS. You know Riky Riky that you said is impossible when you have different sizes between X and S.

Not when you originally download them, some games give you the option of shrinking them on Series S which I presume removes stuff that is specific to Series X, Gears 5 does this, but you don't have to do it and the game plays regardless.

that goes for all the Series games.

I think it depends on the developer if Jason is to be believed.

With a smaller resolution target, Ronald says the expectation for Xbox is that developers will not ship their highest fidelity images—or mipmaps—in the Series S version, so it should reduce the file size. That's not an absolute guarantee, though.

"Ultimately the controls in the developer's hands," Ronald tells IGN. "We've had this technology for a while that allows developers to intelligently choose which assets to install on which device they're playing on. So the flexibility is in the developers’ hands to make sure the right assets are there."

Not when you originally download them, some games give you the option of shrinking them on Series S which I presume removes stuff that is specific to Series X, Gears 5 does this, but you don't have to do it and the game plays regardless.

But doesn't the store detect what console you're downloading the game onto and then gives you that version?

That's how I thought Smart Delivery is supposed to work. I mean it's dumb downloading the whole thing when you only need a part of it.

So now Smart Delivery isnt a thing? After I got into many debates about just what it is...I dont even know if I was right or wrong reading the last 2 pages...

Maybe tomorrow Smart Delivery will be a thing again.

Whatever the case, no need to try to say its something else, compression is just better on PS5, its not the end of the world.

PS. You know Riky Riky that you said is impossible when you have different sizes between X and S.

You really can't grasp it can you😅

I've said several times you can shrink "some" games and I even mention Gears 5 specifically, but not all games on Series S.
However this doesn't change the fact that the original download contains the files for both machines.

I'm not a member of next-gen yet, so bear with me. So when you download SoT on XSS it starts as a larger file and then you have to shrink it?

Yeap like PC versions of games have both Series S and X too because the size is similar to Series X lol

It is not a matter of understanding... it is reality.

When you download the game on Series X and/or S they have different sizes unless of course the game uses the same assets across the both version.

The reality is I own both a Series X and a Series S, in fact I own two of both. The reality is I also own the expansion SSD, the reality is also that if I download a game on my Series X to my card and then take that card to my Series S it plays the game instantly, that makes the reality that there is one file.

Well yeah if you have already downloaded the series X file version in the SSD, it's not like the series S refuses it or redowloads the file when you want to play with it :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I would have to check the download of one of the "shrinkable" games onto a Series S specifically, maybe if you just download it straight onto Series S it might download less, I've not tested that. However not many games actually give you the option to shrink them, Gears 5 and Forza Horizon 4 do off the top of my head.
I've played Gears 5 from my expansion card on both Series X and Series S so the original larger download works on both machines.

Well now that Riky Riky explained how the Dumb Delivery works I keep trying to understand how MS PR did spin all the Smart Delivery interviews that doesn’t work like how they said 🤔

My original point wasn't about smart delivery, I was saying that the download file size quoted contains code for both Series X and Series S, it's one file for both machines. You can prove this by downloading it on Series X and then plugging it into a Series S and it instantly works, it doesn't download anything else.

Did you try to do the opposite? Download the game on you series S and try to play on Series X?

Because you know the higher texture can be used in both version... the game just scale down it at runtime (it is a very light task without loss of quality to the S... PC do that).... the opposite not... if you have the lower texture you need to download the higher one to X if not you will have loss of quality scaling up.

Like others games showed the game assets download are the same between X and PC... there is no other version included.

But have you tried downloading it first on the Series S?

In theory the install size should be smaller. If you put that external into your XSX then it should download the rest of the files to complete the XSX version.

Riky Riky Series S/X games can differ in file size, same as One S/X.

That's not the reason why some game files are larger on XSX than on PS5.

Xbox S/X files are asymmetric. The S version is the min baseline file, then more is added on top for the X version.

There's nothing extra bloating the file size of any XSX games. Its all being used, its the higher res version.

The file can only be reduced for XSS if some data thats only needed for XSX can be removed. Not the other way around. Its asymmetric.

If the XSS did not exist, games would still be the exact same size on XSX. And some would still be smaller on PS5.

It's not like the series S uses a different file to the series X version. It's the same and the file size increase only on series X when there are higher graphic setting (for example) as texture.

Can you prove the games you moved from the S to the X aren't using lower quality assets?

?

I don't know how much simpler I can say this but I'll go over it one more time.
I download a game , the last one was Outriders on my Series X to the expansion card, it works on my Series X. I take that card and plug it into my Series S and the game works instantly. Therefore as I said in the beginning the file works on both machines so contains code for both versions in one file.

We can all read silly Riky

Your original point was the Series X size is being inflated by having to download the Series S version

The Series X version can still run using Series S assets. I want to see evidence that the size is actually being inflated by Waste Delivery

I said the file contains code to run on both machines, it does. Only the developer knows as I said pages ago how much code is specific to one machine in that file. I don't know, there must be some amount of code specific to the Series S and that can't be removed from the file. In some games you can remove code specific to the Series X.

I haven't changed anything 🤣

There is one file to download on Series X, that file also works on Series S, it really isn't that difficult to grasp.

The files for S+X have an asymmetric relationship.

Lets call the game file that works on both = "W"
Lets call the smaller game file just for the XSS = "Y"
Lets call the extra data only necessary for the XSX = "Z"

W can be played on both XSS + XSX (W = Y + Z)
Y can only be played on XSS (Y = W - Z)

Removing the extra data only necessary for the XSX version (Z) from the XSS/X version (W) can make the game file smaller (W - Z = Y)
But removing any data necessary for the XSS version (Y) from the XSS/X version (W) would make the game file unplayable.

If the XSS did not exist, games would still be the exact same size on XSX. And some would still be smaller on PS5.

Riky Riky , I have a Series X and XBO....all this I just grabbed from a XSX tho:

XBO file size Approx 54.5

Series X file sizes::

2 separate Current and Next Digital Deluxe Edition: 86.9 It includes the XBO version in both editions.
Series X/S only: 86.9

All 3 next gen editions are the exact same file size.

You trying to tell us the Series X/S version is...lets see....86-54 equals...

32GB?

Looking at the approx file sizes on my TV screen, I agree.

Riky, this is the post that kicked all this off with you, c'mon:
Also the Xbox version contains the Series S and X versions.
This is where Smart Delivery comes into play. And what some were talking about, how you forgot this is amazing.

It's an amazing feat to witness someone being so incoherent that they manage to tangle themselves up in knots.

I know, right?

I know, right?

Where did I say that you can minus off the size of one version to give you the size of the other? I didn't. I said the file size contains both versions, and it's one file. Some people even doubted that at first, but now they accept that fact so we've got somewhere.
Like I've said several times already, there will be a degree of code in that file that relates directly to Series S, that may vary by game and developer, I dont know how much there is but it's not going to be zero.
I also never said anything about PS5 or a comparison to PS5 file sizes, that's something else people have just made up.
The point is the file size contains code for both Series consoles, how much of that code is specific to Series S you would have to ask a developer to find out, I'm not claiming to know that figure and people who are saying it's zero have offered no proof of that either.
