Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139... |OT| Unto Thy Shade

The motivation I'm fine with. But how they got there was just 100% deus ex machina for me. Unless they can for example explain what happened to the humans for the "guard birds" to let them through. Not to mention the locked doors and all.
WE can assume after nier and co past the test the door remain open

I recently played through Nier Automata. I didn't like it. I thought the soundtrack and character designs wer great, but the story was presented in just about the dullest fashion possible. Plus the environments were generic and dull.

My friend really wants me to try this. Should I?

A bit harder to recommend if you didn’t like Automata. Though I do prefer Replicant’s Story and OST.

Not sure if you’ll like the environments either. It’s a little bit more diverse than Automata but it is still based off of an 11 year old game so areas are smaller.

Wait for a sale is my recommendation. As a Nier fan though, I encourage you to give it a try especially if you’ve nothing else to play.

I just reached ending B. I know I need to get all the weapons to reach the ultimate ending, but does the game differ otherwise at all on a new run?
Assuming it's the same as the original, C and D play exactly the same as B with no new story except for the very very end. But you can knock out C and D in the same playthrough by saving before the end and just reload your save to make the other choice you were given. Don't do D first though. To get C you have to choose to kill, so make sure you do that one first.

I love this game, but going by what you said I don't have any reason to think you'd like it.

The questions and answers (you give) explain everything.

Its a sanctum for the pure humans (Gestalts) to live without fear of the Replicants, by giving the correct answers it shows you know how the world is, and how it came to be that way. It concisely summarizes the rationale and method of the whole gestalt system, and if you know that, you are recognized as master.

Its one of my favourite bits in the whole thing, its such a concise and elegant way to give some crucial exposition.

Never played the original Nier and brought this one which how much I enjoyed automatata. Payed £38 with £4 off my next game, so not to bad.



Which RE remasters sold for 40? That was the remakes, the RE zero, original, 4, 5 and 6 remasters were lots cheaper.
The Remasters was like £15.99
RE2remake was £40 and I think RE3remake was £34.99
Not sure where people get these prices from when they try to make out they was full priced games.

story in replicant is more palatable than automata imo. replicant also have more interesting backstory to read through 🤷‍♀️
 
NieR is more like a form of art, which means you either get it or you don't. And its thus hard to recommend. Its really the best way to describe it. Nier is about existentialism, nihilism and other topics. I hold the same opinion about Metal Gear Solid 2, its post-modernism fascinates me. Its the biggest reason why its my fave MGS and one of my fave of all time. But I can see why some players utterly hate it.
I think a good barometer for this is:

Did you like The Last Guardian?

But yes, both Nier games are legitimate claims in the long argument over if games should be considered as art. TLG is a work of art. Nier Replicant and Automata are works of art. You either appreciate this or you don't. It's fine if you don't, Call of Duty and Destiny are that way. Not everything has to be for everyone, and that is absolutely true of the more artsy examples of mass media entertainment.

It seems that the world where we come from, and that feels quite medieval, is connected to the real world through the Lost Temple. Because the way we reach the real world does not make much sense. We climb a tower, take an elevator, travel through some gardens and strange rooms, and suddenly, it seems we reach the final room (with Yonah and the boss, which is the kid from the beginning obviously) and we can clearly see the real world outside.

So I am wondering : was the world an illusion of some sort ?

I get it that Popola, Devola, the main character, Yonah were not human. But what about the humans in the world we explore : are they real humans ? This sounds a bit strange as well, and no clear answer for now.

The fact that shadows were humans that transformed seemed obvious from the very beginning though.

Memory is a bit fuzzy on the first one so I’ll skip that one.

There are in fact no pure humans in the game. There could be but Nier destroyed the chances of that happening.

Due to the events of Drakengard 1, the modern humans were infected with a disease called the White Chlorination Syndrome where you turn to salt if you don‘t accept to be pawn of Drakengard’s gods.

To combat this, humans, using the power from the remains of Angelus, the red dragon, devised a way to fight. Long story short, they couldn’t succeed so using the prior research they planned to separate the souls of humans from their vessels. The souls would not die but the vessels would so they made artificial vessels for them to come back to when the disease doesn’t exist anymore. These vessels are called Replicants and the souls are called Gestalts. Unfortunately, it seems a problem occurred and the Replicants gained sentience which is why the Gestalts(Shades) couldn’t combine with their Replicants.

So yeah, the actual humans aren’t human looking or can be described as humans anymore while the people who looked humans are all artificial. Popola and Devola are androids design to oversee the return of the Gestalts to their Replicants.

There are three books and all of them came from the same experiment used in Project Gestalt. The books are the one supposed to help combine the Gestalts and the Replicant. All these books are former humans that were experimented on during the age of the White Chlorination Syndrome.

There are many villages around the world, all run by a Devola and Popola that act as farms where Replicants are "grown". Despite appearances Replicants are sterile, so each settlement has a finite lifespan unless new infants are introduced by the observers (D+P) running them.

Papa & Brother Nier are set in the same village but on different "cycles".

The Grimoires were created using barbaric magic rituals involving people being forced to fight to death.

All this info was never in the original game, but included in the short stories in Grimoire Nier.

The Yoko-verse is extensively timelined if you want to look into it, but its pretty convoluted due to their being multiple branches each leading to different futures. Nier just exists within one such future, but it feels like the human race is doomed in them all!

Forgot to mention but

There’s actually one human left. Emil. Well, whatever’s left of him anyway.

Also, the rejection of Replicants to combine with their Gestalts result in the disease called the Black Scrawl. This rejection is a two way street. It means the corresponding Gestalt of a Replicant infected with the Black Scrawl is turning mad which is why there are shades that are aggressive and shades that have reasoning skills.

I guess it's pretty much a no brainer? Anything I should be wary of?

I hate Automata, was a horrible game imo. But I really enjoyed the first Nier, so I guess you can try :D

Got the game and played the first hour. I watched a lets play of the original Nier lomg time ago after I finished Automata and I gotta say, Pap Nier is better. When can you change outfits, I downloaded the Automata dlc constumes and wanna rock the 9s costume for bro Nier.

At the very start if I’m not guessing wrong.

There should be an option to change costumes on the main menu option screen.
 
This type of comment is what i was refering to when mentioning nier fans. Just demented opinions and flat out dismissing faults that have been faults in every game since games existed. Somehow it doesnt apply to weaboo game because reasons. Thank fuck and baby jesus that developers dont make games like this very otfen. Its like begging for games that waste your time and have the largest amount of fetch quests possible. Because after 50 hours and after you played the game 3 times therers some philosophical line of text somewhere, that makes it all worth it. Its literal insanity the type of fans these 2 games have created
What a tantrum. People like something and you can't enjoy it, and it's driving you crazy.

NieR is a fantastic game. It's smart, creative and original. It's not perfect, especially the optional side quests, but it does so much right and unique that the overall game is still a masterpiece.

I think I'm nearing the end but I can't imagine doing another playthrough unless something shifts drastically. The pace and quest design of this game is slowly killing me. For context I love Automata and Death Stranding, which I've seen brought up here a lot.

Just start a playthrough B. I think you'll change your mind early as you'll see it's quite different.

Also, your quests carry over. Any you finished in playthrough A will still be complete in B. Playthrough B will probably only take 5-6 hours and will feel quite different from A.

What makes them fun, what makes them boring, and how/why some games get away with using it as a means to an end, while others are more heavily criticized. Because all I know right now is I do not want to do all these same fetch quests over again.

I mean... I've completed B. Yet to start my progress to C/D/E because I'll be grinding out the same stuff and want to give myself a breather. But while getting to the end of B is much quicker, it's really quite similar. There's added backstory/context, sure, but it's not nearly as different as with Automata and ending B. Not to mention what comes after that.

B broke me at times.

The Junk Heap in B playthrough.

Is just sad. In A you're there, rampaging robots and shades. And you do it without remorse because you don't know anything. The little brother went insane because his brother died of falling debris due to his own doing. So in B, you see the shade and robot POV. They just befriended eachother when the accident happens. They didn't do anything wrong, the robot saw it, analyses they were careless and the shade feels pity and felt the brothers were nice guys. And then you're on the scene, on a mission to obliterate them with the brother wanting to kill every robot in existence.

I also played 2 doors of the DLC. Its pretty okay. You play as the other dude, and some scenarios are fun like the first person rail shooter.

Honestly speaking the quests Nier Replicant so much smoother than most games. the world is not that big so you can get through each place very fast and you never need guid in where to go.

In most games they have huge open world thats its pain the ass to get through, some quests you need to slowly follow foot steps or tracks which makes the quests just drag on.

I have a gut feeling this is something we'll have to agree to disagree on (which is fine), but something like find the missing ferryman quest where you have to traverse between two locations for a single piece of dialogue is a pain in the ass as well. Especially since you have to repeat it in later playthroughs.

You don’t need to repeat completed side quests by the way.

The quests that you haven’t finished will need to be redone.

The quests in the game are bad. It's best to just avoid most of them, honestly.

There are some gems in all the busywork, and the banter changes the further in the story you get, so never really had an issue with them myself. Also they are pretty much par for the course of most JRPG's.

Just look up the flowchart. Do the quest if you have the items on hand already, or when you're bound to go to that specific location anyway. I ended up doing quite a bit of quests, but I never farmed. I have one maxed weapon, which is weak AF though. And a level 3 Phoenix spear and a few level 2 swords that demolished the endgame on Hard mode anyway. Quests are mainly for money, and you don't need that much in the end (you can also sell items you won't use). I could buy all weapons with quite some quests left unfinished (shit, like catching 10 fishes, get 10 alloys, and some other stuff I ignored). There is one quest, or maybe 2, that grant you a weapon and thus are required for the true ending. But that quest was decent actually.

Some are fun, like the sick kid you can easily do when the story takes you to the tree anyway. I thought the bandits quest was nice as well, basically some combat challenges to mix things up.

The biggest bitch is farming Eagle Eggs (and its impossible to do after a certain event), though you can use other weapons if desired. But I like the Phoenix set. You can get them from the third DLC door though.

Nah, you could get them at any time from the aerie. They just in a different spawn location after the events there. Pretty sure they also drop commonly in one of the nightmare rooms.

Truth is, the RNG can screw you at any point, but you are never stuck.

Actually, Broken earrings might be the worst. I got like one or 2 during the last dungeon. And you can probably grind them in the field but drop rate seems to be low.
