Nintendo Direct | Xenoblade 3 announced

The argument that Xenoblade 2 would lose "mass appeal" because of the designs was made on this board when 2 was first revealed. Fast forward to 2022 and its the highest selling Xeno game with Takahashi saying Pyra is extremely popular, even being included in Smash.
How can they reject Mai but allow Pyra in smash

I do know some people who never played XC2 because of the bewbs, but that's anecdotal

I think the sexually pandering/titillating character designs and guests artists helped XB2.

No it didn't help.

It's not that big of a feat to outsell the other 2 games.
1 only got a limited (physical only) release in the west, and X was on WiiU.

The Xenoblade 1 remaster is on track to outselling Xenoblade 2. It sold in a month what Xenoblade 2 sold in 3-4 months

This is from potential new customers seeing Pyra/Mythra. There is no similarity between how the games play. Those designs didn't hurt anything. They helped.

Even with the lack of titillating designs, which personally bums me out, the character designs are still really boring to me. The only exception is the huge grey guy. Otherwise we have dark skinned Joker, generic catgirl 23482, shorts girl, girl that's built like a fridge, and MC - who while not being offensively designed, just doesn't give me any particular emotion when i see him. Like the character design version of cardboard.

The designs can be fixed to a degree with costumes/visible armor swaps like XB1, but they're starting with a really bland canvas.

I personally like character design in XC3 so far, sure they are not as over top as XC2 but I still like them.

No shame in that, but what exactly do you like about them, if you don't mind me asking? Or just a general artstyle thing?

I actually like Saito's artstyle, but in general the character design in XC3 fits the tone they are going for, in XC3 their world is consistently at war so character like Noah and Lanz dress up like military they are not civilian like Rex was.

To me each character design in XC 1&2 make sense in context of their world and story.

SxwoY4k.png

Shulk is not military man, his much more interested in studying and doing research, so he dresses more casually.

cFnhJuI.jpg

Rex is scavenger and his wears his scuba diver suit most of the time so he can dive in the clouds anytime to gather materials.

Noah, unlike Shulk and Rex his experienced fighter, he fights in frontline, so designed like "samurai" that suggest military.

Noah doesn't look like samurai at all though other than his stance. He looks like a motocross racer at best or a background character from World Trigger at worst. Rex design is pretty good as you mentioned, fitting in to his "profession" as a cloud diver (though long pants instead of shorts would have improved his design about 200%). Shulk does look like an everyman teen, I will give you that one.

His "Samurai" design is same way as Assassin in Fate Stay Night and Flynn in SMTIV. I personally digging the design of him so far and to me he fits tone of XC3.

So a ponytail?

He's fine I guess. I'm not really finding any of the characters offensively bad, but just boring. To me it's a huge step down from the colorful characters and personalities of XC2. Not every character in 2 was a winner, but the main cast was pretty varied and fun. As far as tone, it's hard to tell from a single trailer, but maybe you're right.

I personally LOVED the cast in XC2 but in XC3 trailer the first line we hear is "fighting in order to live and living to fight" which suggest this game is not gonna be about going to "fun" adventure like in XC2.

I kind of agree. Too early to tell but I hope you're right and we can customize outfits and make them look cool like you could XC1 and XCX.

Aside from that, I often think characters look bland or stupid at first, and then when I play the game the character has a good personality and their look seems to work for that personality so it stops bothering me. I hated the look of pretty much every character in Fire Emblem Three Houses, for example, until I played it, and then I really liked the characters and their design seemed good. I also was worried about Yakuza Like a Dragon because of the protagonist's crazy, silly hair after liking "serious cool guy" Yakuza heroes so much in the past. But Kasuga turned out to be a great character and his look seems perfect to me now.

Come to think of it, I may have thought Rex looked like an annoying little weiner at first. I know him now, and like him, but I don't think his design instantly won me over the Shulk's did. So maybe after a few hours of play these problems will just sort of naturally be forgotten.

Putting character design discussion aside, I'm curious to know how the combat will play out in the 3rd game. We see Blades in trailer but I dont think Blade system will return because neither Noah, Lanz and Eunie are Driver and this time we have more than 3 people on active party based on the trailer.

Cant wait to see more info on the combat.

Great points. I think character design is taking a focus right now because we have so little information to intelligently discuss anything else. After seeing a lot of foreign developers take the recent "western" approach to a lot of things, I'm probably extra touchy on a subject that will likely be fine when the game releases.

If I had one wish, it'd be for the UI to not be so damn busy this time.

That I agree, I LOVE Monolith Soft games but they are not good at making UI. XC(Wii), XC2 and XCX all had bad UIs, XCDE is the only one that showing they are improving.

Watch this (already time stamped)

looking at the character info, some of them having young age doesn't make sense to me like Sena is straight up Blade and Mio being a Flash Eater and Eunie being high Entia (with mix bood).

I hope this is going to be the box art cause it looks much better than the logo reveal in the trailer.
I got a feeling this game will have more romance in it than the previous two.
I can see this being like Tales of Arise where the party is made of three couples.
Sources telling me we are going to get a delay on Xenoblade 3. Not going to make September.
I wouldn't be surprised if it gets delayed a few months. But at the same time, the fact that Breath of the Wild 2 got delayed into 2023 makes me suspect that some Monolith staff that could've helped with it got assigned to Xenoblade 3 instead, so development of the latter could be in full throttle.

Release date is now July 29th, 2022.
Special Edition is the same for all region

Battle system looks really cool.
Seems you can do fusion with party member, you can also see the outfit is swap between party member. Noah blade looks really cool

Somehow it looks more like 1 doesn't it? I think that's a good thing. A bit rough technically though but oh well, that's Switch vs huge open world games maybe.

Wow, it shows like 7 party members in battle at one point. I hope the interface is much improved, because thinking of the mmo style of the first with so many...
