Nintendo doesn't get enough praise for their game launches

I don't know why this was so funny but it was

I know this isn't what you are talking about, but sometimes their launch shipments are low enough that it causes problems if you are looking for a particular game even a week or so after launch. Not being able to even get the game at retail near a game's release date has always struck me as a poor launch. I had this problem with a few 3DS games, such as Luigi's Mansion.

But yes, if you download the game or can find a copy, the game itself is usually in good shape at the time of release.

And their online is totally free. I appreciate it.

Wii U development is nothing compared to PS4/Xbox1

isn't Wii U development on last gen principles... not huge budget...

PS3 and Xbox360 game launches never had such issues either.

Huh? That's a hell of a way to shift blame. "It's not our fault we shipped broken garbage! THE SYSTEM WAS TOO POWERFUL!".

Anyway, PLENTY of broken games launched last gen. You must be new.

For a free service their online play is on point almost every time. Games like Pokken, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate never drop for me at all when playing online, and the lag felt non-existant for the most part. Smash Bros on the other hand... that game has rough online play, yeesh!

I've had way more issues in the past with PSN and Live, and those are bloody paid services.

Despite the unnecessary hyperbole, they're not wrong - Nintendo launch in very small markets in comparison to Halo's or Battlefield's markets. I'd imagine server management is significantly easier. (although it doesn't really matter, as all the consumer is going to care about if the online works or not - not why it doesn't)

Nintendo's games running well on day one is something that should definitely be praised more.

Nintendo ships their games in pretty good shape. There's no denying that.

There's a reason Zelda U has suffered so many delays.

I don't think they should get praise for putting out products that work.

Omg sis...ill keep the dream alive for you.

This honestly isn't funny and distasteful. Nintendo does a good job I agree OP. I've had some small problems with Smash though.

😒🙄 distasteful okay sure. Nintendo is a company, they will be fine

You can commend the stability of their launches but they certainly don't handle online services any type of well. Have fun trying to go through the labyrinth of adding friends, have fun going through their incredible online storefronts, have fun recovering your purchases when your system goes kaput.

But at least it's stable.

As Miyamoto once said, bad launches are for a moment, poorly planned services are forever.

In fact, it is:

“Mario Kart on the Wii, Smash Bros, Monster Hunter, those games were toe-to-toe with some of the biggest franchises like Battlefield that we supported in terms of concurrent players in the evening.” - Todd Northcutt, former General Manager for GameSpy Technology

Mario Kart 8 launch had some bad D/C frequency goin' around.

And Smash went down every time a new character launched. Roy and Ryu were reaaally bad with this.

Otherwise, it is nice knowing things will typically work. Not sure how much praise that's worth, but it's great nonetheless.

Oh wow, didn't know about this. That's crazy!

Nintendo really does a great job getting their game ready for launch without HUGE day one patches to fix the game and broken online out the gate.

Mk8, Splatoon, Pokken, Smash had flawless launches.

Good job Nintendo.

I know there is going to be a joke about there is only one Wii U owner in the whole world.

Damn OP. I know you called it before it happened but goddamn that first post is hilarious.

On topic, I agree with someones earlier statement that this should be expected and not really praised at all.

I don't understand how the first post is "savage" or "funny" at all. I mean with the exception of Pokken the games the OP listed are multi-million sellers.

MK8's launch wasn't that great. There was a glitch along the lines of that if someone left a lobby without voting, that entire lobby got DC'd. Pretty jank shit.

Pokken's launch has been very smooth though. Online works great so far even during gaming prime time.

OP clearly didn't play Smash 4 Wii U on launch day without the day-1 patch. I played it for about 6 hours before wising up and getting the patch.

Unpatched Smash 4 has godawful loading times and drops frames when you zoom in on stuff and rotate the camera while the game is paused. I think I also had it freeze. Maybe that's good by PS4 / XONE standards. Compared to Melee basically being rock-solid unless you tried to fuck with it, Smash 4 is not worth much praise.

Yeah, but the online feature set for many games is pretty horrid, to be honest.

The year is 2016 and I cannot party up with an online friend to play/matchmake against 2 randoms in Smash 4. Sure their games may be functional, but it goes way further than that.

Nintendo games are mostly unambitious, so it should be expected that their games would perform better.

I mean, there's a tremendous difference in scale between Nintendo's output and games by companies like Rockstar or Bethesda.

Its like when people talk up how great and stable the framerate is in most Nintendo games, yeah because few of their games ever actually push the hardware visually.

I mean they seem to be doing a lot better with their online than they used to, but I'd argue they've made a lot of really questionable choices game release wise that I find it difficult to praise, especially the NoA branch and how they handle localization(their Fatal Frame release, Fire Emblem Fates, etc).

And even day 1, you mention Splatoon but Splatoon was lacking a lot of content that it has now after several updates later. Splatoon has been slowly becoming a bigger and bigger game, and its completely fair to argue that the initial release was really lacking.

There has to be a better word than calling god damn Nintendo unambitious.

Modern Nintendo absolutely is unambitious from a software perspective. Look at how much of their output consists of safe 2D platformers.

Look at the new Zelda game, the only gameplay footage they have shown us after years of development is Link riding Epona in a bland empty forest. Could you imagine if Rockstar did something similar and showed off the next GTA with a clip of the main character driving a toyota in an empty parking lot? They would get laughed at.

Well, there were about 150 million Wii's, so...

I legit lol'd.

RIP

Really? Didn't seem to happen with Splatoon. All that testing must've paid off.

I'm not sure if this is bait or not...

Fixed it for you, he was in a rush to get dat 1st post.

Can't say I've ever noticed an issue with Nintendo games during launch week but I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to jump online first thing.

Vita means life

the morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'd all be grey, but your picture on my wall
it reminds me that it's not so bad
it's not so bad

:(

Yes, let's not call the company that makes one new IP per generation (if we're lucky) unambitious. Not the company that has shown no ambition in courting third parties to reclaim their market leadership status. Anything but that for the company that won't take a loss on their hardware to make a system with a competitive system.

Hey Pushmo though !

Dude got banned for that? Nintendo threads aint no joke. I thought it was pretty funny if not predictable..war never changes.

Ot: Nintendo does a good job with its multiplayer focused games launches, hopefully they keep it up with nx

False, but nice try :) Maybe you'll try harder next time (if we're lucky).

They make some nice one off games so I know that they put stuff out but they're not trying to build new brands. They're comfortable with the Mario, Zelda, Pokemans triumvirate. I don't think sending out stuff like the aforementioned Pushmo to die on Nintendo Network is really pushing a new IP.

They didn't even make a new Wii Sports for WiiU for gods sake.
