Nintendo @ E3 - No Direct, Just Zelda Treehouse Stream

I'll be pretty happy with Nintendo's showing if Zelda looks good (read: not slow, not tedious, not handhold-y, not going through the same ol' motions), and if the Pokemon Sun/Moon stream reveals new Pokemon (ideally accompanied by the release of their Sugimori art). Oh, and a localized Mother 3 would be the cherry on top.

You know... the problem is that whenever Zelda is shown at tradeshows, you never really see the "slow, tedious, not handhold-y" stuff.

It's not until you play the final game that you encounter all that.

Personally I'm not all that hyped for Zelda (on Wii U) or Sun/Moon. I'm concerned it will be the weakest showing yet for Nintendo. :(
I'll just rewatch the Digital Event from E3 2014. That shit was amazing.

- The Robot Chicken sketches
- The Star Fox and Mother 3 jokes
- Reggie vs. Iwata in the Matrix
- Smash Bros: Mii Fighters, custom moves, 3DS montage
- Amiibo! With first wave detailed after the event
- Reggie staring dreamily into the camera with his moist eyes and quivering lips
- Clip of the Luigi Death Stare (simple, but appreciated)
- Yoshi's Wooly World, in the yarn shop
- Reveal of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Reveal of The Legend of Zelda for WiiU
- First decent look at Hyrule Warriors (Link, Zelda, Impa, Midna)
- More on Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (starter Megas in action!)
- More on Bayonetta 2 — now with Bayo 1 and Nintendo costumes!
- Reveal of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
- New look at main story in Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Reveal of Super Mario Maker
- Reveal of SPLATOON, at the aquarium
- Palutena confirmed for Smash
- Miyamoto with the Star Fox Zero tease

Then you had the amazing Smash Invitational, followed by the round table with Pac-Man. You had the 3DS roundtable with Code Name STEAM. You had the Treehouse Live coverage that included tons of Smash and Splatoon. (Man, imagine if they had also shown Majora's Mask 3D at this point, which we now know was in development.)

So much good stuff. Probably my favorite E3 in E3 history. And if the rumors by Emily Rogers and others are true that that Nintendo is amassing an unprecedented lineup for NX, I imagine there'll be another E3 like that in the near future.

It just won't be this E3!

i am fairly confident because of what we have seen of the game, plus all the interviews with aonuma and recent remakes/remasters and a link between worlds.

maybe don't get your hopes up about an unprecedented lineup. i don't think they'll go all-out in grabbing every third-party game under the sun. instead, expect a more 'curated' lineup. the 3ds in 2016, especially in north america, is a really good idea of what i would expect.

2014 was just a amazing year for nintendo fans, shit, now I have to go back and watch the super best friends reaction video to that nintendo E3.

I'm not worried. Normally we would goth a lot of nx info, but it's delayed for max 5 months or so. So we still get huge news from nintendo this year that will be a better show than anything what the e3 is gonna be. Besides i prefer to see zelda than what we goth prev year from nintendo...

Oh, I don't care about third-party stuff on Nintendo consoles — that's why I have a PS4/PC. I meant "unprecedented lineup" in terms of variety from Nintendo themselves. First-party stuff, in other words. If the rumor is true that it's a shared device family now, that could free up each of their teams to make something different instead of portable and console iterations of each title. For example, if they can just make one Mario Kart that works on both platforms, then that frees up the Mario Kart team to make, say... a new F-Zero. :-)

Ooo, I'd like a link to this, please!

this is sadly most likely, even if Zelda is a good showing. That being the only big thing will be great bait for doom articles.

Despite everything I think articles will somehow under line how good Zelda is going to be. I am really confident in the game and I think that announcing the bad news so early to e3 will somehow help Nintendo in getting good coverage of the game

Zelda is good enough for Nintendo. I think everybody knows the position the Wii U is in and Nintendo has moved their studios to work on NX.

I sincerely hope so; I have my own bones to pick with Nintendo, but that's because I love them (really the only manufacturer I'm not huge on is Microsoft, but I PC game so whatever) and constantly seeing things pop up about how they're going out of business/will flop/should go third party just physically hurts my brain at this point because I get annoyed headaches from it.

Remember the Wii E3 stampede? If NX gets launched in March 2017 there won't be an E3 unveil like that. That's what I don't like about this. Zelda is not nearly enough imo. I don't see how they're supposed to get people hyped up with no E3 showcase before the console is launched, and they probably won't be at TGS either. Are they supposed to start the hype by uploading a Nintendo Direct video?

Why not? The gaming press will report on it just the same, and more people pay attention to news articles than they do E3.

Also, they're probably going to do their own public unveiling this fall.

Why not, I'm sure there'll be enough hype from just a video. It'd suck to have a reveal at e3 then wait a hecka long time for some more information.

E3 may be lacking but this year they are releasing

Kirby
Fire Emblem
#FE
Star Fox
Twilight Princess
Picross TP
Rhythm Heaven
Pocket Monsters
Bravely Second
Mini Mario & Friends
Yo-Kai Watch
Metroid
Mario & Sonic

maybe:
Box Boy 2
Detective Pikachu
Paper Mario
Picross 3D-2

please:
Metroid Prime Trilogy HD
Skyward Sword HD

my body
backlog
is ready.

Considering NX is less than 12 months away, you would think they would want to start the momentum for fans to get interested. I don't care for Zelda games so I guess I will skip it.
Yeah, at least start showing some concept demos or something. But then again 12 months is a long tail to spread information out over until the launch happens. I feel like when companies jump the gun and release information too early, that gives the public too much time to sit on it and form a ton of conjecture; which may be good or bad.

I think hype trains aren't allowed anymore, and even then, the hype is subdued because we kinda know what to expect from Nintendo this year.

I'm keeping my expectation pretty low (even if I look forward to see Zelda !!) but when they announced Day 2 treehouse live with MHG, DQ7 and Tokyo mirage they said "including" those titles, so maybe there will be some surprises or some "one last thing". Personally I think (don't want it but that's ok...) they will talk about federation force, unless something happened to the august release date. And maybe Paper Mario color splash.

The smartest move possible from Nintendo will be to announce the date of the next direct and/or of the reveal of the NX (if that's not the same).

Is that enough though and will the articles get a positive or negative angle? I think they need to show off the first NX games somewhere where casual and mainstream media writes about it too, the jaded gaming journalists often take the negative angle by default, especially if something is new. I remember seeing 6's and 7's on almost all Wii games on the big gaming sites no matter how fun they were and a iirc GameSpot sat bored and flipped the wiimote in the lap to play Wii Sports tennis, while the casuals went nuts and had never had that much fun with games before, same thing with the Oculus Rift launch game demo marathon.

I definitely don't expect anything new that would be close to the buzz Zelda will generate. I also don't think they'll announce anything related to NX if they want to keep the discussion on the things they actually talk about at E3. But I'll look forward to Zelda, of course.

Oh I don't expect something on a Zelda level but I'm considering every little addition like a plus now... Yes I don't think we will hear the word NX from Nintendo but I wish we could have a date to look forward too. The wait have been already too long until now and we still don't know anything about NX :(

Yeah, I'm dying for NX information as well. The news that it wouldn't be at E3 and the Zelda delay really hurt my excitement for E3, but I'll just soak up that Zelda info (even though I want to go on a media blackout ;_;).

Hey, I don't enforce the rules. :P

I'm not sure if they're officially allowed or not, that's just the general answer I hear whenever someone asks about hype trains these days.

To tie them over on the Wii U I think a Skyward Sword and Super Mario Galaxy HD collection would be nice for the fall if they don't give us a major release till Zelda U. While this might piss people off, it's better than nothing.

Are we expecting more Amiibos to be announced? I can't believe we're only halfway through the year and (at least what I'm aware of) I'm not interested in anything Nintendo is releasing for the rest of the year. That's a first.

Personally I'm not all that hyped for Zelda (on Wii U) or Sun/Moon. I'm concerned it will be the weakest showing yet for Nintendo. :(

I'm getting old, but i do remember an E3 where nothing substantial was shown but Wii Music. That was a horrible E3 iirc. And wasn't there an E3, the last one where Skyward Swords was demoed by Miyamoto that also had nothing except Zelda SS? Much like this E3.

2008 had Animal Crossing City Folk, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Music. I just knew back then that the Resort demo was basically a sneak peek into the inevitable wm+ based Zelda Wii.

2011 was an off year in terms of new game announcements because they unleashed everything they had in 2010's conference and it was the transition period to 3DS/WiiU. Besides the Zelda 25th anniversary campaign (free copy of four swords on 3DS eShop, golden wii remote, orchestra, OoT 3D) the presentation focused on "5 key titles" for 3DS (luigi's mansion 2, mario kart 7, kid icarus uprising, star fox 3d remake, super mario 3d land.) Of course there was also the Wii U reveal debacle, where they showed Zelda HD tech demo, the new tablet controller and primitive demos that would later turn into NSMB U, Nintendo Land and Wii Sports Club.

And if the rumors by Emily Rogers and others are true that that Nintendo is amassing an unprecedented lineup for NX, I imagine there'll be another E3 like that in the near future.

That's assuming they even bother with E3 next year.

You forgot Dragon Quest 7 & 8, how dare you!?

I'm hoping they go all out. Story trailer, subtitle, gameplay demo's, release date, collectors edition details.

Please.
The game is likely a launch title for NX, so I don't think they will provide a firm date. But month of release they perhaps could provide.

I keep my expectations in check. I expect the games they said they would talk about and Mother 3 localization announcement. Everything else is icing now.

It still confounds me that there's just nothing else really for Wii U this year other than Paper Mario and #FE.

There has to be something else. The Mother 3 localization would definitely be a nice surprise, but I will be shocked if there isn't some kind of remaster for later this year.

I'd vote for either Metroid Prime (the entire Trilogy is probably out of the question) or Super Mario Galaxy. Either would probably be an easy job and go a long way to ease angry Wii U owners. They could even get Bluepoint to do it since they are made up of a few Retro Studios people...

Let me dream.

Dream away but don't expect anything new. Nintendo needs every gun they have for the NX launch, they're aware of how much is riding on it. At best we might get an HD remake or two, along with a smattering of VC games (like Mother 3).

Oh I definitely don't expect any new games besides Paper Mario, but the very least they could do is throw us another HD remaster. And it better not be Skyward Sword. It's absolute crap that Zelda gets 2 remasters while Metroid Prime is just sitting there waiting to appease a fanbase, or Galaxy which would probably sell gangbusters.
