NPD Sales Results for December 2008

Some things I found notable:

In the overall rankings, 9 of the top 20 games are published by Nintendo. Two extra 3rd party Wii games showed up. I wondered about Call of Duty's prospects after Wii focused commercials were aired, but expected very little. I'm also happy to see Shaun White up there since it is a quality product that makes great use of the balance board. I hope this means more balance board based games.

I'm shocked to see Link's Crossbow Training with any rank at all, but it must be a mass market success even though it and the zapper are so unliked here.

Not every gaffer though, and as I said before it does have it's flaws to be sure. It would never be admissible in a Court of Law as Evidence or anything, but it serves it's purpose well and makes reading GAF and responding to people a lot easier.

No P4 in the PS2 list is fail. Yes, yes, I know it's a niche title and it probably met or exceeded Atlus's expectations, but I was still hoping to see it chart well.

I guess we can at least note that Nerf N-Strike (and therefore the top 20) are > 150k, since Rock Band 2 Wii doesn't show up in console top 10.

Speaking of analysts, Divinch sums up his thoughts on the Wii situation for the month (he estimated 3.2 million for the month)

Research firm believes supply constraints held back US Wii sales in December to the tune of two million units.

EEDAR, a research firm specialising in the video game industry, has issued a post NPD statement explaining why its Wii projections for the month were so far off the mark - the firm had expected Wii sales for December in the US to come in at 3.2 million units, a million units more than the actual figure.

"First, it appears our projections for the Nintendo Wii in December missed the mark. Projections are always a complex task; one significant factor for the Wii in our December calculations was examining previous hardware trends," stated EEDAR. "These indicated that the Wii, particularly in lieu of the holiday season and historical December trends, would outperform its November number by a significant margin. Clearly, that did not actually turn out to be the case."

However, EEDAR believes Wii sales could have been doubled if supply hadn't been an issue.

"These Wii figures are not any indication that is demand slowing down," explained EEDAR. "The Nintendo Wii is going through supply just as quick as they have before and these numbers merely reflect the large disparity between supply and demand. We still believe the Nintendo Wii would have sold north of 4 million units have supply and demand been in equilibrium."

Is this the general consensus? They could have pushed 4 million of them if they had them? Or are there any other theories out there?

By the way, I have to ask this question.

Is Gears 2 seemingly unexpected plunge proof of how big a contingent hardcore gamers are on 360? You can say CoD is more casual which I agree but it doesn't explain why Gears seems to have flailing legs in sales AND Xbox Live. The original Gears held up on the Xbox Live charts extremely well for months on end. Gears 2 reached #1 it's first week and since then has dropped like a rock.

The only theory that makes sense is how wide the outcry on the internet has been over the glitches and multiple problems for Gears. I can't think of anything else that would explain why it's collapsing like this. I mean, I know anything over 700k in a second month is still amazing but look how close L4D is and how much more WaW sold. Not impressive after the first Gears and how marquee a title it was supposed to be.

the first gears is a classic of the videogames, second one was just a decent game imho.

Wii games usually aren't as front loaded as PS3/360 games. Probably because of the more casual nature of the audience.

People need those third and fourth Wiimotes.

Nice try though. Unlikely that I'll get a PS3 - it'll come after Wii and 360 if so. Unlikely I'll get a Wii or 360 anytime soon too.

I'm still puzzling over this chart:

35l.jpg

Looking at the year running up to the end of the chart (Nov 07 - Nov 08?), it seems to suggest that 'HD' third party sales have been split pretty much 50:50 twixt 360 and PS3.

At month 12, PS3 was a smidgen over 5m, 360 a smidgen under 15m.

At month 23, PS3 had added 20m units, or a little less - to a smidgen under 25m - and 360 added..about 20m units, to 35m.

Hmmm?

That doesn't seem to jive with general perception. While it's not impossible, it seems very strange.

Did Nintendo do something funky to these numbers? Did they normalise them or something? Can anyone else verify these numbers?

edit - I've had a long day, so I might be reading the chart totally wrong :lol I really do puzzle at it though.

Easy, it's launched aligned. Measuring the first 23 months of the 360's life. Not what it was when the PS3 launched and 23 months after for the 360.

Not numbers that I've seen but we just learned it's not in the top 20 overall and it's third in the PS3 list.

OK, THAT makes sense. I was wondering WTF was up with those numbers, they seemed very out of whack.

Are there non-aligned figures anywhere?

edit - I suppose what I can take from that one is that PS3 had a very bad first year for third parties compared to 360's first, but recovered to track it in the second year. (OR, 360 had a really good first year for third parties..)

Wow...

It really is a testimonial to how good the Microsoft marketing and PR handlers are, when you consider these charts. The two HD consoles sold the approximately the same globally this year, but one is singled out and given the "doomed" designation. Of course, it is also a testimonial to how poor Sony marketing and PR handlers are as well...

It seems like many are chest thumping about a few hundred thousand difference, while difference between the Wii and either HD console is ~13 million difference YTD.

Just talking about the numbers... not the history, expectations, intended sales, desires, price, specific markets, etc...

I mean just take a step back and look at that...

Wii YTD: 23.0 million
360 YTD: 9.9 million
PS3 YTD: 9.2 million

In reality, the Wii is in first class, sipping champagne, while the x360 and ps3 are fighting for a window seat in coach. No, the Wii is traveling by private jet, while the 360/PS3 are 2 kids fighting in the back seat of a station wagon.

LMFAO

:lol

Funny Stuff

Although on a serious note, you make a good point. Worldwide, PS3 and 360 and virtually neck and neck, however the doom and gloom comes mainly from PS3s performance in the US market, i.e. low software sales, decreasing hardware sales, and a widening gap from it's closest competitor.

It will be interesting indeed to see how the system performs in 2009.

PS3 owners in aggregate are lagging about six months behind 360 owners in quantity of software titles purchased, slightly more behind the Wii. And in September Wii owners were about two and a half months ahead of 360's trend.

There are exceptions, but if supply isn't an issue December being double November usually isn't a bad guess.

John Dunbar

correct about everything
There's 13 games on Nintendo platforms in the top 20 and only one PS3 game. If Nintendo's PR is true and there was 20 games on Nintendo systems in the top 30, things are looking pretty gloomy for Sony. 7 games from 21-30 have to be on Nintendo platforms. ruh-roh.

Could they have pushed 4 mil? I think so.

Were there supply problems? Most likely.

Was there any other reason for lower than potential sales? Possibly.

One theory I have is that perhaps with the current yen to dollar disparity they might have not pushed as many consoles into the US as they could have because they'd not see the same overall returns as if they pushed more units into other regions which see the same holiday seasons in retail and would have offered a better return. The idea being keep enough units flowing in to the US to maintain dominance of marketshare, but not go all out due to economic climate.

Mostly because of a pretty awful first year for third parties on ps3.

It's second year's sales pretty much matched 360's second year (i.e. about 20m each).

It's overall numbers ltd will always be dragged down by year one, but it doesn't say much about the ongoing situation (nor does matching years to years, really..obviously 360 is 'a year ahead' in software sales, and comparing them without aligning launch dates would be less flattering for PS3).

Wow so 9 of the Wii Top 10 resides in the NPD Overall Top 20!

The shocker of the day for me :

19. CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR WII ACTIVISION BLIZZARD

Good to see Shaun White is on its way as Ubisoft had hoped, it sold the most last month on the Wii and it looks like Dec kept that up big time

Nintendo is back to selling HUGE numbers for their first party line up; like the N64 days. Only this time they actually have a userbase that buys random shit too.

Not counting WiiPlay, we still have the following from this year alone.

- Mario Kart 5+ Million
- Wii Fit 4+
- SSBB 4+

Who knows where SMG and Zelda and few others are, but i am sure they all crossed at least 3+ million.

And I wonder where Halo 3 is at right now, because I think Mario Kart might be passing it soon to become the best selling single platform title in the US.

That also means that PoP isn't even in the top 30. Unless those 3 remaining spots are MK vs DC, LBP, and PoP PS3.

Wow, that's gotta sting that neither LBP or Resistance 2 is in the top 20. Yikes

Good for Ubisoft with Shaun White. Seems like a quality product.

And that's honestly one little bright spot of good news for the PS3. I think most people would say keeping pace with 360's 2007 software sales* is healthy, and it still has a smaller userbase.

* This is somewhat of an exaggeration. Looking closely at the chart it appears the 360 was ahead by 7.5 million at the 11 month mark and a little more than 10 million at the 23 month mark, so 360 packed on an extra 2.5 million sales over these aligned time periods.

When I was discussing this concept, one of the biggest complaints was ":lol :lol I don't have that kind of money to waste, but I'm still not biased." To which I said, "bullshit, it doesn't cost that much" for the simple reason that you have your three consoles, your two portables, and one gaming PC.

Can I ask how old you are - and if you have a job (and if you live on your own)?

I love games/gaming and would own every console and handheld if I had the money and the time, but here's the catch: I'm an adult with a huge mortgage and many misc. bills to pay.

To say "it doesn't cost that much" to own 6 gaming systems (if you're including a gaming PC) as well as games for those systems is a complete joke if you aren't still living with your parents...
